During recording, the band asked studio employees questions like "are you scared to die", "when was the last time you were violent", etc, and recorded their answers. Bits and pieces found their way onto the album.

My brother became schizophrenic when he was 18 many years ago -- he told us when he became more stable that he started using LSD to cover up that he was experiencing audio and visual hallucinations -- He said it was easier to blame it on drug use and not on falling into a deep mental illness -- Its been many many years he has and still battles this terrible illness -- He was a very smart and funny and creative child and it stole everything from him -- so sad

I'm thrilled that someone is finally taking a real in-depth interest in this album! As a really loyal fan of this band, I applaud it and give it a thumbs up! "Speak to me" is actually kind of an abbreviated taste of what's to come. It's a mixture of short snippets of songs that will follow on the TDSOM album. You can hear a helicopter (On the Run), coins jingling (Money), laughter (Brain Damage), a clock ticking (Time), a woman's voice screaming (The Great Gig in the Sky), etc. Well edited and perfectly atmospheric. I dare say it's these little things that make this the best rock (and maybe music) album ever. Famous! I've listened to it probably a hundred thousand times and every time I'm thrilled and moved... By the way - this album is not primarily about Syd Barrett's life. It's a philosophical look at the ordinary things that happen in a person's life and what troubles them. You can take a lesson from every lyric you hear on this album, or at least reflect on it. I thank God for giving birth to this work and for gifting Barrett, Waters, Gilmour, Wright and Mason with such talent. I wouldn't change a note or a word. It is an absolutely perfect work. I look forward to hearing more reactions... Please excuse my English. I'm from the Czech Republic and I'm helping myself to a translator...

Can't top that. Did see them 1994 Joe Robbie stadium in Miami. Opening show of the Divison bell tour. FULL size pink, Pink floyd blimp. Helicopters with search light over the stadium while performing The Wall. World's largest diso ball. Naturally occuring light mist of a rain with the weather. Can't make this stuff up. My first introduction to DSOTM, I was about 12 years old on an extended school field trip and became terribly motion sick on the bus. It was late and dark. One of the chaperones gave me a can of coke to settle my stomach and a Walkman with Darkside in it to help me relax. I had no idea what it was at the time, but the moment was indelible. It was about 3 years and an exposure to The Wall later that I became enthralled with Floyd and rediscovered Darkside of the Moon. That was 35 years ago, and I'm just as enthralled today.

Gilmour's guitar on the left is picking chords, and fed through a 'Flanger' effect which creates an up and down sweeping sound to the notes. The lead part is a lap steel guitar, which lays with the fretboard facing upwards, and, as the name suggests, you sit with it across your lap, or sometimes on a small stand. The style of playing creates a dreamy glide between notes and chords. The instrument is mostly associated with Hawaiian and country music, but David Gilmour has used one on many of Pink Floyd's album tracks from their very earliest days onwards to create a beautiful ethereal atmosphere.

Here's another band that you may find intriguing "The Allman Brothers Band - Whipping Post (9/23/1970)" Duane & Gregg Allman are the brothers in the band. Duane Allman is renowned for his slide guitar 🎸 he was killed in a motorcycle accident at the tender age of 24yrs. old. Gregg Allman played the organ/keyboard, vocalist, and songwriter, Dickey Betts another founding member lead guitarist, vocals, and songwriter. Butch Trucks drummer and founding member and Renaissance man Jaimoe (John Lee Johnson) founding member Drums, and percussionist. This is blues rock at its best, and I suggested this particular song to illustrate Duane's spectacular slide playing. RIP: Duane Allman U R Missed💔💔🔥🤘🎸🎹🤗

00:38 Any wink winks in Amsterdam ;o) Syd gets blames for a lot of LSD use for his illness but I have seen in interviews with the band where they blamed it on a different drug. That drug was Mandrake root, which is a class of drugs called deliriants, along with Tree Datura, Belladonna, and Henbane. The main psychoactive alkaloid being Scopolamine. Nice Shirt Mate :-)

The original lead singer, Syd Barrett, went crazy and left the band. "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" and "Wish You Were Here" about written directly to and about him. He actually turned up one day at the studio while they were recording Dark Side of the Moon and they had no idea who it was. Note: It is actually highly improbable that he went insane from LSD - even the massive amounts in each dose in the 1960's. He himself talked about feeling like his sanity was "slipping" or "loose" for years. Another commenter here mentioned that her brother used LSD to hide from others and himself that he was losing his sanity. Very likely what happened to Syd.

Actually "Wish You Were Here" is the album that more closely talks about and is about Syd Barrett's life! Dark Side of the Moon is more of a biography of someone from birth to death not necessarily any of the band members. In other words "Breathe" is the first breath someone takes. And the last song "Eclipse" is kind of goodbye. The more you listen to Dark Side of the Moon you'll realize this.
@ianfortier6796

@John Henke - I would agree with you somewhat. I believe that the first side of the record is a life cycle, with The Great Gig In the Sky being the "goodbye", while side two deals with social constructs and aspects of life that everyone deals with. Money, war and class system, choice vs pre-ordained fate, mental health, with Eclipse being the grand, epic finale of the collective narrative.

Shortly before the first mixing began, Pink Floyd’s bassist Roger Waters had the idea of putting a series of questions on flash cards and approaching and recording various people who were around at Abbey Road Studios to give their first reactions to some questions. Starting with a few banal ones like, “What’s your favourite colour?” and “Why do you think a lot of bands split up?”, before then getting into deeper questions. Roger Waters then choose the most interesting replies, and added snippets of these interviews to a selection of the tracks. Track: SPEAK TO ME Question card: “Do you think you’re going mad, if so, why? "I've been mad for f***ing years, absolutely years. I've been over the edge for yonks. Working with bands so long, I think, …crikey." Chris Adamson (Pink Floyd’s roadie) "I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, … like the most of us are. It's very hard to explain why you're mad, even if you were not mad." Gerry O'Driscoll (Abbey Road Studios’ Doorman) Track: ON THE RUN Question card: “Are you afraid of dying? "Live for today, gone tomorrow. That's me. Ha, ha, ha!" Roger Manifold (Pink Floyd's road manager) Track: THE GREAT GIG IN THE SKY Question card: “Are you afraid of dying? "...And I am not frightened of dying. Any time will do, I don't mind. Why should I be frightened of dying? I see no reason for it. You've got to go sometime!" Gerry O'Driscoll (Abbey Road Studios’ Doorman) "...I aren’t frightened of dying at all, ‘cause when you gotta go, you gotta go!” Question: “Why are you frightened of dying” "I never said I was frightened of dying." Patricia (Puddie) Watts (Wife of Pink Floyd’s road manager) Track: MONEY "If I participate in this f***ing effort I hope I …I'm gonna get my gold disc at the end of it. Imagine that!” Roger Manifold (Pink Floyd's road manager) Question card: “When was the last time you thumped someone? Why did you do it? Did you think you were in the right? Do you still think you were in the right?” "Yeah! (ha-ha!) I was in the right. “ Henry McCullough (Guitarist for Paul McCartney’s band, ‘Wings’) “Yes, absolutely in the right!" (Unknown) "I certainly was in the right." Gerry O'Driscoll (Abbey Road Studios’ Doorman) "I was definitely in the right. That geezer was cruising for a bruising." Puddie Watts (Pink Floyd’s road manager’s wife) "Why does anyone do anything?" Gerry O'Driscoll (Abbey Road Studios’ Doorman) "I don't know …I was really drunk at the time!" Henry McCullough (Guitarist for Paul McCartney’s band, ‘Wings’) "After he just told me he was plugged into number 2, he was asking why it wasn't coming up on fader eleven. So, after yelling and screaming and telling him why it wasn't coming up on fader eleven…it came to a heavy blow, which sorted the matter out." Chris Adamson (Roadie for Pink Floyd) Track: US AND THEM "You’re not getting past me!" Gerry O'Driscoll (Abbey Road Studios’ Doorman) Question card: “What does the phrase 'The Dark Side of the Moon' mean to you?” "There is no dark side in the moon really. Matter of fact, it's all dark. The only thing that makes it look light is the Sun" Gerry O'Driscoll (Abbey Road Studios’ Doorman) Question card: “When was the last time you thumped someone? Why did you do it? Did you think you were in the right? Do you still think you were in the right?” "I’m not gonna kill ya, so like …if you give 'em a quick, short, sharp, shock, they don't do it again. Dig it? I mean he got off light, 'cause I could've given him a thrashing. I only hit him once. It’s only a difference of right and wrong, innit? I mean, good manners don't cost nothing, do they, …eh?" Roger Manifold (Pink Floyd's road manager) Track: BRAIN DAMAGE Question card: (Unknown) "I can't think of anything to say except... I think it's marvellous!" Peter Watts (Pink Floyd's road manager) Track: ECLIPSE Question card: “What does the phrase 'The Dark Side of the Moon' mean to you?” "There is no dark side in the moon really. Matter of fact, it's all dark." Gerry O'Driscoll (Abbey Road Studios’ Doorman "I once reached a stage in my life where I was completely convinced that I'd gone over the brink, or that's what I cared to call it"! I like your intellectual approach to analyzing and understanding music. This is especially necessary in the case of Pink Floyd, who, in addition to top musicians, were also educated. And not taking into account the intellectual side of their work would be missing a big part of understanding their music. Well done. I am waiting for the next responses of the album.

I heard first heard this album just over 40 years ago BUT recently I've watched a whole bunch of ”first reaction videos". Those 40 years are completely irrelevant! Every reactor today expresses the same "wow!", no-one says it's dated, or not relevant today. In fact both the audio experience and the intellectual commentary hit younger people today in just the way. Maybe one day, when we've all been uploaded to the world wide AI it will become a reflection of the past, but while we're still air breathing squishy lumps I think Dark Side of the Moon will continue to wow!

Good analysis on the album. Gilmours voice is sad and mournful as good as it is. You are right. And he’s saying life is a painful journey which it is. It can be joyful at times also but there’s far more pain in life than joy.

Most bands write and record songs. Pink Floyd creates soundscapes.

I'm sure it isn't true but lyrically, it's as if Roger Waters never had a happy thought.

The production on this album is amazing. It does not sound like an early 70s album to me. I guess it had to stay on the billboard charts for 17 years just so the rest of the music world could catch up.

It's not the "voice of god"; it's a guy recognizing that another guy is wasting his life laboring manually while never considering cerebral issues.

Love your channel and I think you are the most insightful person doing these reaction videos, but one little thing bugs me. "Listen of". "Reaction of". Sounds weird Listen to? Reaction to?

Roger will say many times he’s not a very skilled musician, Gilmour , wright , and Mason were far superior musicians . Roger was the main lyricist and was great at putting things together.. he has a great ear for what sounds right

Waters strength actually wasn't his bass playing. He frequently had others play the bass because frankly it wasn't always up to snuff. Like it's been said that Ringo Starr wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles, Waters probably wasn't even the best bass player in Pink Floyd. But Waters genius was found in so many other areas.

Actually, quite a lot of the bass work in the band was done by David - Roger not being the greatest bassist in the world!

IMO Dark Side of the Rainbow is nonsense, I wouldn't waste time on it. Just get stoned, listen to one, watch the other.

It's a first reaction. If you want to hear the album, you know, you can. I've heard this album literally thousands of times but to watch someone hear it, for the first time like we did, is awesome.
