The fact that Dave can sing this song while playing that crazy fucking riff is insane. That's true talent.

singing whilst riffing is hard, my brain either makes my voice follow my hand or the other way round… i can’t separate them 😂 i’m wondering if dave has this to some extent, it sounds like he sings when he strums the guys a fucking legend either way!

The thing with Mustaine isn't that he has the best voice you've ever heard. It's just that it fits Megadeth's music so well from the JCM 800 Marshall's to the dry drum mix. They just have a sound like no one else that's raw, refined, and musically complex.

Dave's voice suits Megadeth, since he writes the bulk of the band's material. I couldn't picture anyone else snarling like Mustaine in Megadeth, same like Hetfield for Metallica, Blitz for Overkill, Araya for Slayer, etc; it's part of a group's sonic identity as much as a certain guitar part or drum beat, the sum of its parts.

In your last Boston reaction, you said you liked long intros. You need to listen to 'Good Mourning/Black Friday', an earlier Megadeth song with Dave and Chris Poland taking turned soloing throughout the song. With the first two albums, it is easier to hear who is soloing as Chris' and Dave's guitar tones are different. The raw energy of the song makes it one of the top early Megadeth classics.

I love your reactions to all this "old school" music. I recently came upon a live recording of Black Gives Way to Blue, which is a tribute song and a goodbye Jerry Cantrell wrote about losing Layne. And he basically poured all his pent up grief over the loss of one of his best friends into this short but beautiful song. There is even an interview he did saying he was sick with migraines and some weird illness when he was in the process of recording it, he went to doctors and they couldn't find anything. But once the recording was completed all his symptoms went away. He's been so private about that loss it was incredible to hear that, because grief and pain so often turn physical. Anyway, I know you love AIC too and I know this is the band without Layne, but I've not seen many reactions to this particular song, and literally no reactions to the live version. I wondered if you wanted to be one of the first. Here's the link, I would LOVE to see your reaction kzfaq.info/get/bejne/adSnaaqEmJuciZs.htmlsi=w3mJaaddgLhKnk3R

One of the best songs of all time, in any genre. Dave’s life and career has had some twists and turns since this recording. His voice started to go downhill in the 2000s and wasn’t able to sing a lot of songs, and then he had throat cancer a few years ago. He beat cancer, and since then he’s been getting his upper register back, and they’ve been adding new songs to their live shows that they haven’t played in years. It’s pretty inspiring. He’s also mellowed a lot. He’s 62 and a grandfather. He’s riding high of his 16th album, just had an incredibly well-attended tour in Latin America, and seems to be enjoying life.

This was the classic Megadeth line-up that recorded their biggest albums from 1990 - 1998: Dave Mustaine (vocals/ guitar), David Ellefson (bass), Marty Friedman (guitar) and (the late) Nick Menza (drums)... It's a pity I never got to see this version of Megadeth... the first time I saw them was in 2001 w/ Jimmy DeGrasso (drums) and Al Pitrelli (guitar) Dave Mustaine vocals came from a mix of Alice Cooper (who became his godfather and mentor) and Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols. He was not keen on being a singer but he couldn't find a vocalist in 1983/ '84 who could match his intensity. As a live band... regardless of who is in the band, Megadeth is Dave Mustaine and anyone he brought into the line-up had to deliver the songs like the records ... and his songs are often technical and very difficult to play live... whereas in Metallica, they were a bit more raw and in-your-face. Metallica is a dual rhythm guitar band w/ Kirk Hammett handling the intricate leads... Megadeth is a dual lead guitar w/ 2 contrasting lead guitarists - Mustaine would play the screeching loud leads... while guys like Marty Friedman, Chris Poland, Jeff Young, Chris Broderick, etc. would balance his aggression w/ more melodic leads.
@dylanbrown3758Ай бұрын
Dave's vocals in the 80's and early 90's are insane. Started losing his voice in the 90's which is why he wrote songs to suit but to be expected when you play n sing at high intensity.

With live Megadeth, the music is usually spot on, unless you watch some of the 80's shows where they were often f*cked up or the recording of the show sucked. Dave's voice can be hit or miss, especially on songs like 'Tornado of Souls' which is higher in Dave's vocal range. On those higher songs, his vocal will go out at times. Love Megadeth live. I got tickets for their show this August. I don't think Dave will quit touring until he doesn't have a choice, but I make time to see every show which passes close enough for me to go see until he does.
