True. Then, in my opinion, Nu Metal and the likes saved it from the depression of grunge, then Garage came and brought it back to basics. It is in need of saving again.

You are a guy after my own heart. I am a 56 year old woman I was in my 20s during the grunge phase and my husband was in a grunge band. I relate to you more than I do most people. To me grunge is deep and cryptic and, we were just learning how to express our pain because mental health was not good then and it wasn’t OK to talk about. To me grunge has the most heartfelt messages usually about what not to do and how life can tear you down. But it can be inspiring!! If I lived across the pond, we could be best friends! Love, love, love your grunge reactions thank you for going down that rabbit hole❤❤

Honestly, contrasting Chris singing Stay With Me Baby and then listening to Cochise by Audioslave will give you a really comprehensive grounding of what Chris was capable of. Very seriously, he was quite probably in the top 10 voices of rock and metal of all time. Very few people can sing like silky heaven and then do tortured screams and long AF notes like he could.

More like Layne is 1 small rung under Chris. Chris evolved throughout his music career, his vocal abilities seen from the late 80s to the 2010s is nothing more than dynamic power. Layne Staleys vocals are very powerful, but his vocal ability is unmatched to Chris' ability, If layne was around today he would not be singing as good as you think.

My take on the Layne , Chris debate is this……. Chris has a classic metal high end vocals, he is probably technically better than Layne, HOWEVER Layne has a phenomenal dynamic voice. Layne”s vocals define the “grunge” vocal sound that has been emulated more than any other. Within the grunge genre my vote goes to Layne

@kikivon3501 The only reason i give my vote to Chris is that he advanced throughout his music career experimenting with all different types of singing styles whereas Layne never had the chance to. How I wish Layne would've progressed through the 2000s

Soundgarden is up there for me of my favorites and Chris Cornell had an incredible voice. He also has a very extensive body of work to go through with Soundgarden, Audioslave and not to mention his incredible solo career. And he was an a very nice guy and we were all devastated when he died in 2017. Next up check out Rusty cage by Soundgarden. Johnny cash himseld covered it !

This song is grungy goodness from the get go! Chris Cornell can not be replaced. I was fortunate enough to see him on his "Higher Truth" solo tour. The man was a musical beast. He played alone for hours with only ONE other artist accompanying him at any time. He literally moved you with his voice. I loved that show so much even though I was seated in the nose-bleed seats, so when I found out Soundgarden was going to be performing at my fave rock festival, I was elated. I stood in one spot on the barricade in front the stage they were scheduled to play for 6 hours just to see Chris Cornell up close. What a blast! I was still high on the energy of the festival when I was shocked to hear, only 2 WEEKS later, that Chris had passed away. WTF? I was crushed by the news, but so thankful that I had made that great effort to see him perform from the close-up vantage point I had. I still listen to him, in all of his musical personas, Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple of the Dog, solo, originals, and covers alike, on a regular basis. Though he was stolen from the world too early, his musical prowess allows us to be entertained by him forever. RIP, Chris, and thank you for all your musical gifts to the world! ❤🤘🏼

I was in my 20's in the 90's. Why don't you go thru these outstanding bands in the order they came out it'll give you the same perspective we had growing up with it, and it'll give you a good mix of the "grunge"bands at least. OF course take fan requests, but it will let you evolve as a fan as they evolve as artist. Just a thought it's the closest you can get to being there at the time all this was going down, and believe me man it was incredible to be young and coming of age with the greatest music as the theme of our lives IMHO of course. Others might disagree but everything from pop to rap, to blues, and of course grunge and rock in general were fresh and new , and don't forget we had all the classics at our disposal to, 60's , 70's ,80's, too... just a thought, cheers.

"birth ritual" is my fav soundgarden song, because his vocals are INSANE in it. they only tried to play it once, and chris wasn't happy w his performance. that tells you what a HIGH level of intensity he's performing at on that recording. his voice sounds like a high tension cable ready to snap at any second, and he continues to put pressure on it and push it further as the song goes along. GLORIOUS.

Bro, I still get goosebumps, 3 decades later, when Chris wails. His range is phenomenal. I was truly sad when he departed the physical world. Looking forward to more Soundgarden reactions. You’ll probably want to check out Audioslave. Cheers

Grew up in this era, and I gotta tell ya... I've been watching a lot of your reactions recently, but this one got you major points with me, my friend. It's trendy to hate on Nirvana lately. But the fact that you add Kurt to your lineup of the best Grunge Voices along with these kings of the genre really cements for me that you've got great taste and a good ear.

the reason chris cornell is consider one of the best singers of all time is bc of: "slaves and bulldozers" and "beyond the wheel" with soundgarden and "say hello to heaven" (and "hunger strike" maybe???) with temple of the dogs. those are his opus-magnus when it comes to vocal range. until you listen to those performances you wont get why ppl speak of him the way they do. of course he has many many more really good songs but when it comes to vocal range, those are the songs you should listen.

Mind blowing to think that the grunge scene in Seattle all kind of happened at once. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Nirvana and many more were all playing in clubs almost every weekend while I was in college at the University of Washington. Each weekend we'd go out and be in a club with about 100 people and watch these bands get bigger and bigger. Mind blowing! All of these bands from Seattle

Alot of the time people put Nirvana down just because they were the most successful airplay wise but they had some great tunes. But as a musician Alice in Chains, Soundgarden & Pearl Jam are just more entertaining to listen to. I'd even put Stone Temple Pilots above Nirvana in that department. Great reaction dude 🤙

Thanks so much for getting into Soundgarden and Chris Cornell. This music was definitely my favorite genre also. There are just so many great songs, so any of the ones that have been recommended will not disappoint. Chris had an almost 4 octave range and was just a badass. I was devastated when Chris passed. RIP
