Mark Lowry, the soloist, wrote the lyrics in 1984. Buddy Greene composed the music in 1991. It was originally recorded by Michael English in 1991. At the time English and Lowry were singing in the Gaither Vocal Band and Green was touring with them.

Mark Lowry said he got the idea for the lyrics because he wondered what he would ask Mary if they were sitting at his kitchen table drinking coffee. That 20 second note in the middle is all the more impressive when you know he has multiple sclerosis which makes standing difficult. It also made him partially deaf in one ear. Mark Lowry co wrote the song so he knows what it should sound like. He also sings it with reverence for him it is not a song but also what he believes for he is Christian. The reason he is sat down all way through the song is because he had started to show the effects of Parkinsons or MS, can't remember which one. He also has a false leg and at the recording of the song was deaf in one ear. Being sat down makes the holding of the notes is more effective for when sat down the diaphram can constrict the lung capacity. For me this is the gold standard of this song.

This is my favorite version. Period. I love Peter Hollen's version and also listen to it, but this is my absolute favorite. I come from a choral background as well. I was a vocal performance minor and at one point a chorale ed major. I still sing in a community chorale (Rush County Chorale... there's a few videos) and in a quartet. I'm a soprano. I can sing high as well, but not Kate level! Lol. My current top note is an E6, but it nothing as pretty as Kate's 😳😳🥴🤣

Hard to beat when the author of the words actually sings! Mark has multiple sclerosis and in this recording he still held the note for 17 seconds, while seated! 🤗

But your timing for a commentary stop in the middle of "the praises of the Lamb" interrupted the pinnacle of the emotions/message of this song's rendition. Your mouth was hanging open up to the moment of your pause of the song!!! How VERY unfortunate in that the strongest reaction of other reactors has been in the sustainment of the longest note you may EVER hear in a song: 24 beats - 6 measures at 4/4 time!!! and Mark was SITTING DOWN as he held that note!! But you had to interrupt it halfway through and robbed yourself of what should/could have been your moment of strongest reaction. You replayed other parts of the song earlier, but then maybe the pressure of time and your noisy dog kept you from replaying and being enthralled by the emotional peak of this recording: the sustained note!!! Do yourself a favor and go back and listen to it without interruption of the note OR the message: "the praises of the Lamb!!!!!!" - God's redemptive act which otherwise would have left ALL mankind short of His Glory!
