The studio version of this song was already done between December 6 and 21, 1971. This live version in from February, 1972, well into a European tour. Of course, six months later on the Made In Japan live recording, the song had more time to develop. This is still a wonderful take, though!

In my humble opinion the Made in Japan version is the best. In fact most versions from Made in japan were the best including Sweet Child In Time!

I think that you are most accurate with the depression idea in the studio version the lyrics go "If you're drowning you don't clutch no straw" meaning you don't care enough to save yourself, followed with "You don't want to live you don't want to cry no more" those lines there to me are very descriptive of someone who is depressed.

The idea for Lazy comes from Gillan being sick and in the hospital and the band would not play with out him and the manager was upset because he wasn't making any money so he went to the hospital to see Gillan and told him he was just being lazy. So a little while later they recorded Machine Head and that is one of the songs off of that album but that is the background to how that song came to be. Almost all of the songs on that album came from some real event's that happened to them. Highway Star came about after touring America and seeing all of the kids in their hopped up cars, Space Trucking was a tribute to the moon launch's, Maybe I'm a Leo....was because Ian Paice the drummer was missing his girlfriend, Pictures of Home was because the whole band was homesick and wanted to see family and friends in England after touring and than stopping off in Switzerland to make the album Machine Head in December 1971. When a blind man cries was not released tell much later but it basically summed up the bands feelings at that time..great blues number but Blackmore didn't think it fit their image but personally I think it may have got played on the radio and would have introduced the band to a much larger audience at that time.

The best version of this song is the studio version off the Machine Head album. I think it’s about a depressed person on the verge of suicide who’s given up.

There talking about their parents and Society at the time telling they were lazy because they played all night slept all day !!! Society at the time didn’t understand. Like when he says just misunderstood. But how wrong were they LOL😂

Lazy was a song Deep Purple changed quite a lot from show to show, depending on mood or inspiration. There are versions I prefer to this one, but it still gives a good idea of what the band was about. On stage the band mostly took their cues from Ritchie Blackmore, the guitar player as he tended to be the dominant personality in the band.

This was a song that was not totally finished thats why it sounds like a Jam. More likely this was just the first handful of times they did it before the finished product came out on vinyl. As far as live performances go you wind up with so long songs that don't sound like the polished studio versions. Frampton Comes Alive and Allman Brothers live from the Beacon are the only real live versions that sound as if they had been doing them years and not off the cuff. One More From The Road from Skynyrd is a really good one too.

I love the fact that they are so talented they can just riff off each other and make a song out of it. On the other hand, I don't particularly care for this song. In my opinion, there is such a thing as _too much_ freestyling.

I don't think the lyrics have any real importance, as you say it's more of a jam giving the musicians a chance to stretch out, I doubt they ever played it the same way twice.
