If a male hippo is not strong enough to defeat an alpha male, he will get outcasted from the herd and will have to start his own herd, mark his own territory elsewhere.

If you want to know how difficult it is for a lion to attack a hippo, just ask a human to try carrying a 200kg barbell. A hippo is far too heavy for lions to move.

More pride members mean more chances for a hippo to hurt and injure a member. Imagine crowding around and the big animal has more chance to bite a young, inexperienced lion.

I watched a lot of videos about lions hunting super large prey (buffalo size and above), to finally understand the strategies of large herbivores in combating lion pride. Buffalo, giraffe, subadult elephant and hippo generally know that they cannot outmanoeuvre their enemies in tight turning circles (Except rhinos). Hence their survival strategies are usually based on using their lumbering size advantages to outlast their enemies. Lions, unlike wild dogs, have bad stamina. Even if these lions hang onto their prey’s rump area, large animals like buffalos and hippos will use their body strength to forcefully shake them off. Even if they fail, they just need to avoid falling over and save their energy while finding opportunity to bite/gore at a lion nearby. Experienced bulls who survived lions tend to use these survival strategies. Stand still like a mountain and avoid falling over as much as possible (because falling over means their chance of survival is zero and they will be eaten alive).

I have seen a hippo paralyse a fully grown lioness with one bite to the skull. It was awful and a painful death for that lioness. They know not to mess with hippos

@@eshw23nah,lions attack hippos all the time ,if a big male was there,it may well have been different. Yes it's a risk and they can get hurt,but that's just nature, lions go for buffalo's all the time and plenty have been killed by them with their sharp horns,or kicked and trampled on etc but that doesn't stop lions hunting them.

There isn't a single video of lions taking on an adult hippo. There's only endless videos of a single hippo scaring off full prides. Stop living in your Disney fantasy, saying they "often hunt hippos" is beyond retarded. Lions are house cats compared to Hippos, Rhinos, and Elephants.

A hippo can easily overpower an entire pride of lions. Considering that a single male lion is capable of defeating a large pack of hyenas, it seems reasonable to assume that a hippo, with its immense size, aggressiveness and strength, could achieve a similar outcome. Moreover, the disparity in size between a hippo and a lion far exceeds that between a lion and hyenas

Adult Hippos are not vulnerable to lions out of water. Its extremely rare for Lions to hunt Hippos. Hippos are just too large and powerful. Hippos forage all night when Lions are most active. Lions have enough trouble with Buffalo. So Hippos represent even a harder challenge.

They are vulnerable. In fact, hippos more often than not, struggle to turn around. Unlike buffalo, hippo relies on fleeing to the nearby river to escape from lions.
