The FBI Files

4 жыл бұрын

The 1993 murder-for-hire investigation of former Motown Records music producer Lawrence Horn, contract-killer James Perry and the resulting controversy around the book Hit Man. Unravel the mystery alongside the FBI's greatest law enforcers and forensic scientists.
#TheFBIFiles #TrueCrime #Investigation
Season 2 Episode 2: The FBI investigates Lawrence Horn and co-conspirators who murdered Horn's wife, son and son's nurse for a million dollar lawsuit settlement. The investigation was challenging because James Edward Perry, who Horn hired to perform the murders, had followed instruction in a book about how to be a hit man to minimize evidence linking him to the crime.
The FBI Files is an American docudrama that takes a look behind the scenes of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's crime laboratory.
Real FBI cases are recounted through reenactments and interviews, due to the sensitive nature of the show, viewer discretion is advised.

I also feel bad for Tiffany because she was used by her father (as an unwitting accomplice) in the days leading up to the murders She confronted him in court on the day of the sentencing hearing saying “I hate you, I hate you so much, you killed my family”. He showed no emotion as he was being escorted from the court room. But what’s worse was that when Tiffany visited her father on his death bed he still never apologized to her or expressed any remorse for the murders.

I really admire & appreciate the FBI, Police & the security agencies as well as the forensic department for handling this tragic crime of killing the helpless boy, mother & nurse in professional manner. I also admire them for the endless efforts for working tirelessly to bring such Dirty Creatures to justice & get them off the streets. Indeed it was also great to bring the publisher of the book to justice too. Because either directly or indirectly, it was involved in the process of killing & must be considered as a conspirator too.

Lawrence Horn was nothing but a totally selfish ignorant individual and was prone to violent outbursts. His relationship with Millie (his 2nd wife) had been out of control even before they were married. Millie had every reason to fear Lawrence (especially after he bragged about shoving a fellow sailor [during a stint in the Navy] off a ship deck and making it appear accidental). Even after their divorce was finalized, things only got worst. When Millie threatened to take legal action against Lawrence in order to get the child support money out of him, he screamed at her over the phone saying he would kill her if she ever took him to court. She forbid Lawrence from coming or entering her house and warned everyone (including the nurses) who had access to the house not to open the door to Lawrence or any strangers whenever she wasn’t home.

Literally, everything Horn did made him a suspect in the most obvious ways possible. Asking if he was a suspect of his family's murder while being 3000 miles away, having a very convenient settlement claim being set up not too long before, filming yourself to indicate the date around the same time of the murders while having a poorly cryptic tape that discusses murder plan in the same room, and calls within a close distance of his house to an area he was from. Even if it slowed down, there's no way you can shake off the authorities with so many "coincidences".

@@umedavk2011 For all intents and purposes you can't get automatic weapons in the USA. The number of people that have automatic weapons, including criminals, is extremely low. Handguns are semi-auto weapons. All semi-auto means is one pull of the trigger fires one bullet. People say semi-auto like it means something scarier than one pull one bullet. Its literally how handguns work. A handgun with a double stack magazine (to hold more bullets) in 9mm is just as deadly as an ar-15 chambered in 9mm.

Actually not really. The killer did not follow the book's instructions exactly because remember they said the book said to pay cash at a hotel and not to give your ID? But when the hotel insisted that he still needed to show ID even though he was paying cash, he gave it to them and that's what placed him in the city during the crime. Officers said that without that piece of evidence ( the xerox copy of the ID) they would not have been able to pin him to the case.

The family ended up winning a lawsuit against the book publisher, of all things? Isn't that rather counterintuitive to free speech? And secondly, how did the F.B.I. not have a database of these types of books that alerts who buys them, like if someone bought a lot of fertilizer or attempted to buy arsenic or cyanide from a chemistry supply company, or googled "how to make a bomb"? Hell, the FBI could've bought out the rights to the book or the publishing company as a whole. Nowadays they run almost half of all child porn sites (distributing hundreds of thounsands of images and videos) on the off-chance they catch a 'distributor' somehow adding original content via Tor.

All the compassion for the victims and the families... But winning a lawsuit against a book and not the gun manufacturer it's just fucking pathetic! I'm going to sue a publisher for publishing a cooking book that got me fat, oh wait... Maybe I'll sue the spoon manufacturer, or the Chinese porcelain plate manufacturer... Only in America!

The hilariously ironic part about it is they straight up gave you the contents of the book in this episode, telling us what Perry learned from the book and how the book's tips were used to carry out this murder. This was such a reach to try and grab money, as if someone who was contemplating killing their essentially brain dead child for money wouldn't have gone through with the plan, regardless of whether or not they read this book. Also, the people involved were caught, so the book didn't even allow them to get away with the crime lol.

@@xMrPapadap0lis winning law suit family... Is no longer a geving family, it's the beneficiary family of the murder. The criminals should sue the book as they did as per described and they got caught with it. If I remember correctly, the 2 books were ordered but never delivered because of that insufficient funds check, isn't it?!

When the fbi investigator says they did a good job planning it and they almost got away... hmmm not really, there was an obvious motive and only 2 main suspects.. all they had to do is exactly what they did and that's have patience and go with what they had.

Crazy enough we discussed the lawsuit over Hitman in school. The author was a washed up female writer who was not a hitman. In order to sell the whole concept of the book she interjected over the top misogyny in places. One of the hugely ironic things about the lawsuit was that the victim's lawyer apparently did not understand copyright law. As part of the settlement, the author agreed to surrender her copyright. Rather than suppressing the book, this released it into the public domain. That means that anyone can copy & sell this book without paying the author or publisher a cent. The publicity over the case triggered the Streisand effect, and IIRC it saw record sales.

Notwithstanding the tragedy of this case and the doggedness of the investigators in solving it, the banning of the book does seem a rather more embarrassing footnote to the whole business. Furthermore, imo it belies the claim at the top of this episode about how "cunning" the murderers were. They took the book as an authentic reference manual on how to be a hitman when it was in reality constructed from a mish-mash of other fictional crime stories. Easier for us to find that out now in the age of the internet than it was back in the early 90s, admittedly, but you'd think with all that "meticulous" planning they might have looked into it further before basing their scheme so heavily on it.
