It does look like it'd make for a very good city vehicle. I'm curious as to how hard it would be do to extensive maintenance and repair to, however. No matter how impressive something may seem initially, it's going to break with time, and it's always up to people like to me fix them.

I don't live in a highly-packed downtown area. I live in a nice little neighborhood a few miles away from downtown, with mostly 2-story (but narrow) houses and 2-3 story apartment buildings, most with garages. And with those garages, are curb cuts. And since the lots are narrow, those curb cuts are close together. Which means your odds of finding somewhere to park reduce dramatically as your vehicle's length increases even marginally. And most people live in such neighborhoods, not suburbs.

It's a really cool idea for a car to drive around the city living in but I bet it's gonna be expensive as hell
@goose107711 жыл бұрын
By most places, I mean most of the places where people live. The point I'm getting at is that the market for a tiny car is small here because most people have plenty of room to put a normal sized car that is much more functional and comfortable. For example I have a small car but it is much larger than the tiny cars like this. I can carry 10 foot boards in it from the lumbar yard.

and in that, they are including areas like I live, which is where most people live. Areas with plenty of parking. Most people do not live in tightly packed downtown areas with high rises and on street parking. Most people can shop at a Walmart or a JC Penny with a giant parking lot out front. There is no legal distinction between a city in a suburb and a major urban city center. They are both cities. I live in a township though still a suburb surrounded buy cities.

Most places don't have many people. Most people live in cities where there isn't much space. Especially if you look worldwide, not just in the U.S. All I know first-hand is, it makes no sense to live in my city and have a car one inch longer than you really need. SMART Cars are the way to go if you don't have kids to schlep around. The stubbiest minivan you can find (Scion?) if you do. Enjoy driving in suburbia, that's your thing. I like being able to walk up the block and not drive everywhere.

You've got half of it. I'm saying that most people live in population-dense areas. goose was talking about "most of the places where people live" - the area on the map that has some population. And saying, in most of that area, there's plenty of parking, so who'd buy a Smart car? And if your market is places, not people, that would make sense. But if you start with where the most people - and thus, the most potential vehicle-owners - live, the Smart car looks more promising, market-wise.

That's all very fine, but have people noticed the awkward boarding and exiting of the Hiriko? What about frontal impact safety? Don't think it meets vehicle safety standards. It can therefore be used within city limits only, I guess. Because it originated at MIT, doesn't mean it is all that clever. It isn't.

This is it, exactly: I'm talking about the places where most people live. You're talking about most of the places where people live. See the difference? No? I'll spell it out: Most people live in cities, covering relatively little land area. Fewer people live in the country, covering lots and lots of land area. Now do you get it? (Also, "lumbar yard"? You're buying lower-back muscles?)

Mon Mar 26, 2012 (Reuters) - More Americans are living in cities now than a decade ago, according to U.S. Census data released on Monday. ... In 2010, a total of 80.7 percent of Americans lived in urban areas, up from 79 percent in 2000. Conversely, 19.3 percent of the U.S. population lived in rural areas in 2010, down from 21 percent in 2000. At the same time, the population of urban areas grew by 12.1 percent, much faster than the country's growth rate of 9.7 percent from 2000 to 2010.

Why do we need less cars? How would that improve life for people? There is no vehicle on earth that compares to the car in its ability to take me from where I want to go to where I want to go at the exact minute I want to start going. The only thing better would be something that flies.
