No the blades are at different heights. If they were mechanically linked their speed would remain constantly proportional to each other. or if differential gears were used or done by a gyroscope mechanism then there wouldn't be so much empty space in the middle. Or the thing doesn't fly, just a showpiece..

For those of you who don’t know, helicopters actually have what one might call a transmission - the rotors are synchronized because they are driven by the same engine and synched via what you could essentially call a gearbox or transmission or simply by connections setup in such a way that the blades never go out of alignment/physically can’t unless the shafts snap or gearbox brakes (all depends on the setup) - imagine two spinning wheels on a car without a differential, if you spin one wheel with your hand, the other wheel will also spin on the other side at the same speed… also, helicopters typically don’t change the speed of their rotors while flying (unlike drones), instead, they change the angle of each individual blade. With dual engine helicopters it’s the same sort of concept - two engines put power into one gearbox that spins everything in a synchronized manner. There are a bunch of different ways this can be done but obviously there are ways that are more popular than others due to efficiency, safety, cost, and all the other factors one might imagine affect this system. Even jet engines in huge airliners have gearboxes as interesting/crazy as that sounds - for regular “every-day” helicopters, the top and back rotors (the small rotor in the back) are also synched and this is done with the gearbox so one engine can drive two rotors like a four wheel drive car type of concept and the helicopter is steered by the pilot by a linkage system that changes the angle of each blade on both the top and back rotor - so you can add more thrust from the back rotor to spin the helicopter around its axis which effectively turns it, and/or you can add more or less thrust from the top blades to go up and down… on helicopters such as shown in this video that don’t have a rear sideways rotor it is turned by changing one blade’s angle a certain way while doing the opposite on the second rotor thus creating a sort of imbalance to one or the other side. It’s weird and cool, I recommend watching a video about it. But the speed of the rotors typically stays the same throughout the entire flight (unlike a jet plane that speeds up and slows down its engine to gain thrust) and the sound changes because of the vibration of the air due to the changing angle of the blades. So when a helicopter is chilling on a pad with the rotors spinning, they aren’t moving faster than they would be when it’s flying - however, obviously, if you change the angle the power output of the engine has to also change to accommodate the varying difficulty it takes to spin the blades (depending on the circumstances and load). So if you’re towing an adult elephant around Africa in a helicopter, your engine will certainly need some extra fuel to keep those blades going compared to sitting idle on a pad.
