I am the guy in the black and yellow with yellow socks who chased back onto the group after the attack and as a note, I crashed the first lap and felt like shit in the 94-degree day. First off I want to say your wind direction is wrong, look at the flags after the start fin, the whole start/fin section was pretty much a tailwind. The team in the yellow and the blue had made friends before the race and was more like a 6 man team and refused to do any work when their guys were off the front. The whole race I knew they would do nothing on the backside so there was no reason to chase. At one point on the backside, I had an HR of 130 and was doing 150 watts. When I attacked I was just hoping someone would want to do more than 150 watts. The winner of the race was up the road and the 2nd place guy was friends with that team. If you want more footage of this race let me know, I hated this race and refuse to post my video.

I raced the Cat 4s lot less collusion going on in that race. His wind diagram is off it was more east. Sprinting out of the corner would crush people. Odd course for a crit but in that heat it felt even worse.

I love Gas's "Yo". One thought I had was at the beginning, when gapped off, if the pack is split then usually it's a matter of survival so everyone works together. Don't gutter those you're working with. Maybe half the road, to get rid of the tail gunners, but the ones taking pulls, you don't want to discourage them. Ditto in a break, initially if you want the break to work it might help to let others sit on. Of course, once someone attacks, or someone gutters, or in some sense the truce is broken, then you immediately gutter.

This duo is the best of your channel. I think I’ve said it before but I find your critique and knowledge the most enjoyable to hear, and Gas stations inputs I feel resonate with the layman and provide anecdotal humor and relief. Don’t change a thing. Hopefully some Gas Station videos about how and when you attack from 3k or 1500 would be nice for us non sprinters

Both styles are good, the more casual style you guys seemed to talk more about racecraft and ideas, which I enjoyed. Some good tips I will take with me when messing around on my local loop. I really enjoy hearing the unfiltered thoughts of sports pros, especially this sport there are a lot of tidbits that will very much make you faster just by knowing them. When I get into it with local people (friendly competition) I use some of the race strategies and pretty much always it works out because the other often person isn't being smart when they ride. Given this is IL with basically no bike culture or enthusiasm for it. Anyway... Maybe sometimes (content depending) this casual format works and others a more formal one is needed (like if your trying to hammer in a specific point). Always interesting, always good vibes! Keep on riding!

@10:26 they do exactly what you were recommending in a previous lap. You said use the corner to create separation, and slingshot around, because nobody is going to want to chase you in a headwind. I don't think they ever pulled that guy back. Interesting video as the pace and style was very different from a lot of the other crit videos, even higher levels.

I live in south of Sweden. Down here we ALWAYS have at least 5 meter / second wind (18 km/hour). I live in Malmö and here the wind is from southwest 9 out of 10 days. I think that his intention of letting the gap open up at about 17:50 was that the other riders would brake too much before the curve or that they would take super slow lines like they did in the earlier laps. Unfortunately they kept their speed this time, that is why he had to close the gap again.

Shutting the door is solid advice. However, I don't think there was an opportunity to shut the door. It looked like a great smart move by the rider who punched that gap. Very smart early attack by that rider, imo. I think John was probably expecting the sprint to open up at 200m, not just off the turn.

I also thought this, that shutting the door super hard might have been aggressive. The rider to the outside was going visibly faster and was probably accelerating hard for a good part of the curve before he went by. Had John moved right hard there might have been a crash.

Probably Iowa and Kansas are the two best states for getting guttered and learning to echelon. Hardest RRs I've ever done were fast and flat around Iowa City - anything over 15mph wind will destroy most of the field. Huge midwest farmboys going to the front and smashing it. Dogfight. Dude was giving space to the other rider so they could work together. I'd keep away from the one big blue guy with the terrible fit - he's going to be all over the place and push you into the curb - very unbalanced. Clearly a sprinter.

Hey can someone explain to me why the riders should hug the left side on the stretch of road near the finish line? Jeff talks about it alot but I may be missing the point. Is it because crosswind is coming from the right side and therefore no rider can hide to my left (since it's grass)? But people can still hide directly behind me right?
@NorCalCycling
@NorCalCycling 3 жыл бұрын
You're right. Because it's a right to left crosswind, the draft spot isn't directly behind it's offset to the left. Google "echelon" and you can see the result of a crosswind

After 500m in a leadout, why look back at all? He should have been heads down, emptying the tank to make it to the last corner; the sprinters job is to keep the wheel. +1 to the "in the drops" comment - if you're working for the last corner and accelerating out of it to give the guy behind you a gap to sprint into, you should be in the drops.

If the wind arrows on the screen would have been correct he would have absolutely nailed the final corner. From the corner it was still 320 meters to go. If it would have been a cross tail wind, more cross than tail like the arrows indicated, the rider passing on the outside would have provided the perfect sit for John's buddy who could have winded up his sprint closer to the finish. Going by the comments it was a proper tailwind and the arrows were incorrectly placed. This wind direction justifies the criticism of not closing the door. But Jeff and Chr/Gasstation didn't know that. So while they're usually spot on, I don't agree with them this time.

I'm new to cycling/racing, since they are friends isn't that enough to be quote teammates...and why is that a big deal...just curious? Who cares if you don't have matching kits or whatever....*shrug* lol.
