Yes I agree but that's western world custom; Eastern traditions are different and more rigid. If she doesn't get his mother's blessing their relationship will not end well. Asian folk are filial through and through no matter what we westerners think about that stupid mess.

In India women are taught not disrespect in laws or any family members from husband's side. Actually we all are taught not speak against elderly irrespective of gender. Especially at social events like weddings, get togethers, or a family dinners like this. Its highly inappropriate and everyone would think that u r arrogant or too modern or too western. Everyone would judge you in a wrong way. That's a big no no. Taking a BF or to be husband to f a dinner outside is even a bigger no no. It means that u r trying to separate the son from his mother. A gf or a daughter in law shouldn't come between mother and son's relationship atleast openly. It's only appropriate that he speaks up by himself to protect her dignity. If she would have spoken up their relationship would have ended or the son would have to say goodbye to his family
