After Adrian Hough's (Haytham's Actor) stunning performance of the final entry from Haytham's Journal, from the book "Forsaken", in loomer979's "Assassin's Den Podcast" I just had to do some sort of video to go along with it...
So touching and wonderfully read... as if it came straight from the game!
So a BIG thank you to loomer979, for making this possible and of course to Mr. Hough, who took his time, to do the interview and read this great passage from the book!
Here the link to the original Assassin's Den Interview with Adrian Hough - • The Assassin's Den - f...

PS: RIP Haytham... wish there would be more of him... really complex and great character...

One of the main reasons I love this franchise is because of the struggle between Templars and the Assassins. They both make good points and it's hard to choose whose right even though you play as the assassins. Both sides want what they think is best for mankind.

Connor Kenway there is no such thing as freedom. We are all being controlled by our governments, being told what and what not to do (steal, kill, though valid etc) what to think (racism, gay rights) and how to live (get a job, go to school and so on). If people were truly free we'd have murderers and crooks everywhere. It'd be like the wild west all over again.

@@mrgreen027 it's difficult to explain. He was probably convinced Connor hated him from the bottom of his heart, thing that, in fact, wasn't true. Connor was so indoctrinated by Achilles hate for Haytham that he barely thinks for himself. Connor after really regrets killing Haytham, admitting that he was right and he was actually sorry. In all of this, it was Achilles fault for not letting Connor having any opinion on everything that was going on, if it wasn't for Achilles, they would've probably made a good team, maybe even bring the assassins and the templars together. Man, I will admit it, Haytham was one of the most complex characters they ever made. he was such an innocent kid until Edward died by the very man who would corrupt his kid, then he decides to be the gray line only to then have to convince his son of his intentions and keep a front up so he couldn't be the man everyone wanted him to be. He reminds me a lot of Ezio and Edward, like Ezio his story is about revenge against the man who killed his own father and like Edward, he is true to his ideals. I'm loving both Edward and Haytham, Connor has a long way to go before I like him.

He didn't even learn about Kaniehtí:io's death until Lee tells him. Yes, he's stuck in his Templar ways, but that's because he was manipulated since his childhood. Given Haytham's great combat expertise, it's clear that before the very moment he was killed by Connor, he was trying to make a point to him, possibly to leave behind the true nature of the Templars in Connor's mind before passing away. There's no way Haytham wasn't aware of such a blatant opening, seeing as he was well aware of hidden blades and held down Connor's neck to delay killing him. It was clear in Forsaken that Haytham wasn't planning on walking out of his fight with Connor alive, and he took that chance to explain everything to Connor about why the Templars believe so strongly about their cause.

The Templars from AC2 and Brotherhood were just corrupt, power hungry nobleman. Most of the Templars who were killed by Altair were sincere, although many of them were still cruel. The Templars are the evidence that power corrupts. They consider humans to weak to govern themselves, but they seem to forget that they themselves are also just humans with the same weaknesses as everybody. Young Haytham was a true gentleman with strong convictions, but look how cruel he later became. Killing people unnecessarily and even telling his own son that he should have killed him earlier.

,,But my own father never lied to me". Don't know why, but I have a kind of nostalgic feeling every time I hear this sentence. Maybe because AC4 was my first AC game and because of this I like Edward especially. This sentence shows what a great man he was, beneath the greed for gold. Edward always tried to do the right thing, after understanding his course was wrong. And he told his son to do so too. He teached Haytham to think for himself. He might have had his mistakes, but he was a man with ideals, that always wanted to do good and tried to raise his son to do as him. I don't know why, but I love this sentence.

''But my own father never lied to me''. Such a heartbreaking phrase, he lost his father when he was 10 years old. If you remember in AC rogue in the mission when you have to kill Adewale, Adewale scorns Haytham that he brought shame upon Edward for choosing to be a Templar. Adewale didn't know that Haytham was forced in the Templar Order by Birch and being told lies about the assassins. If Edward weren't killed by Birch mercenaries, Haytham would have become an assassin also, so all the Kenway family would have been Assassins only. The thing with the Templars and Assassins is that neither side is wrong. The two simply believe in two different yet completely valid philosophies. The Templars tend to focus on the failings of man kind and use order as a means of protecting people from those short comings. Assassin's focus more on the positive aspects of mankind and believe that given the opportunity, human beings can choose the right path so long as they are free to make that choice on their own. Both sides raise valid points and that's what makes the conflict between these two forces so interesting. Well......It was interesting in the past anyway. The conflict in the present is much more black and white. Templars are evil villains while Assassins are the blameless good guys. That's the main reason why I don't care about the present day story line. It's your standard good versus evil story.

The Templars are evil and kill innocents. In Ezio's time they intended to enslave humanity with the apple, In AC4 they hoped to find the mysterious observatory to spy on the whole world and use knowledge as power, in AC3 they wanted to spread chaos and rise as kings. And as for the modern world... they wanted the world to end. The Templars are always wrong... Haytham is an exception
@DevilHunter1994
@DevilHunter1994 10 жыл бұрын
Megaproductions302 In Ezio's time they wanted to find the Apple so they could open the vault and fulfill the prophesy that both the Assassins and Templars believed in. In AC 3 Conner wanted to help create a new nation that would act out his dream of a government based on the will of the common man, where as the Templars wanted to help create a new nation that would realize their dream of a government based on Law, order and security. In AC4 both factions wanted the observatory so they could find hidden truths and dispel lies. The difference is that the Templars would use this knowledge to preserve order, while the Assassins would use it to teach and enlighten the people. It all goes back to the difference of philosophies that I mentioned earlier. The Templars believe that men are inherently selfish and self destructive. They don't believe men are capable of governing themselves freely, so they are more concerned with maintaining law, order and security over free will. The Assassins believe that while men can be selfish, they have the potential to overcome their selfishness and make the correct choices if they are given knowledge and an opportunity to do so. This is where the conflict between the Assassins and the Templars stems from. Of course there are evil Templars who pervert the original message of the order for their own personal gain, but the same could be said for some Assassins. Just look at Abbas from AC Revelations. He disobeyed the Creed and killed countless innocents just to spite Altair. I don't agree with the Templars but they do make good points. People can be selfish, they can be violent and many of them think more of themselves then they do the good of their fellow man. This is why I can't say that their philosophy is completely wrong. I ultimately side with the Assassins more since they offer much greater hope for the future of the world, but the Templars make good points about the current state of the world.
@fxxxxx322
@fxxxxx322 10 жыл бұрын
I agree. but I will admit that I am actually drawn more to the belief of the Templars than the Assassins. if I was in the middle of this, I'd definitely side with the Templars. If you follow the series really REALLY carefully, you might notice that the Assassin's have no proper counter-logic against the Templars, whereas the latter actually has valid points against the Assassins. It all comes down to which side can have the strongest contribution to the betterment of humanity. Throughout the whole series, Haytham was the best Templar because he was the perfect Templar Master as he was actually devoted to the progress of the world. Prince Ahmet from Revelations was also a somewhat good Templar Master. Other Templars in the series were sucky, e.g. Rodrigo and Cesare Borgia were only interested in power for themselves, nothing else. (I AM THE PROPHET!!! I AM THE PROPHET!!!)
@DevilHunter1994
@DevilHunter1994 10 жыл бұрын
Fatihun Siddiqui I see your point but I would argue that the Assassins don't present a counter argument because they don't believe it is necessary. Their philosophy is centered around faith in humanity and not logic. The Assassins fight because they have genuine faith that humanity can find the right path on their own. The problem I have with Templars is that when you think about it, their philosophy is kind of hypocritical at its core. The Templars believe that people can't be trusted with freedom or power and that those with power will inevitably abuse it. This is why they want to create a world of order where everyone is told what to do and everyone is equal in the sense that they all lack power over themselves and over others. They will simply be told how to live their lives from the day they are born to the day they die. The idea that humans will abuse power and therefore should not be trusted with it makes sense, but the fatal flaw is that in order for the world of order to come about, someone will have to take control to make sure it happens and that someone will most definitely be a Templar. The Templars claim that no human can be trusted with too much power and yet they expect us to let them have it? The Templars are still human and therefore are just as untrustworthy as any other human being. According to their philosophy, they shouldn't be given power either. This and the fact that the Assassins present more hope for the future are why I ultimately don't support the Templars.

I think the best part about Haytham's character is that the first time you play AC3, you have absolutely no doubt that he is an Assassin. That right there shows that Templars and Assassins are so similat to each other and they want to achieve almost the same thing.

When I first heard this, it hit me like Daniel Cross' last words did that these people were not as bad as I originally thought. Think about it for a second. Haytham was tricked into joining the Templars and Daniel was kidnapped and brainwashed by Abstergo. I regret killing them both. Knowing that Daniel possibly could have been cured of the bleeding effect, and Haytham, while he would have stayed with the Templars, could have been reasoned with maybe...

Haytham represented the TRUE Templars. In Truth the Templars are `good guys` they seek peace and understand that such a goal cannot come through Freedom but order, purpose and direction. Which in my opinion is correct, as I find total freedom (the kind that the Assassin's fight for) an `invitation for anarchy. The Assassin's during the 3rd crusade are the best. Their words are by "Peace in all things" no this talk of freedom but peace. Which is what Haytham also believes. It's the whole deal with 2 sides of the same coin.

***** I find that both the true Templar and Assassin ideologies are flawed. There's certainly a grey area between control and anarchy, due to the inconsistency of human behavior. To achieve true peace, I believe that moderation is the key. The two sides constantly warring with each other does do a good job at simulating the in between though, holding each other at bay so that one side is readily available to pull down the other if one power becomes too big.
@Kettz
@Kettz 10 жыл бұрын
Of course! In my eyes, petty criminal acts play a gear in society. It's simple to say that the absence of any real crime would be catastrophic, and that it's actually the cops' job to keep them in check without wiping out criminals and crime entirely. Moderation of chaos and order is key.

Cesare Borgia reminds me of Charles Lee. I considered them bad because they were power hungry. But I think Haytham would be a good kind of templar. But I dont think Connor was bad either, think about it could you really blame Connor for being upset about his mothers death? I mean Haytham was in a bad place at the wrong time. I bet if Haytham stayed at the frontier when all this happened I'm sure he would have killed Charles. But yet I dont believe Connor should feel ashamed.

Yes, the one thing that makes Haytham different from many other Templars is that he truly believes in true Templar ideology. He remains uncorrupted, is selfless, and truly wishes for peace. It's only because of his experiences with human behavior and his exposure to the primitive, deceptive side of humanity that he remains convinced that the human heart cannot be trusted to take care of itself, and that a firm hand and sword is required to achieve peace.

I have a real love hate relationship with Conner and Haytham in AC3. On the one hand the idea of father and son being forced to fight one another is an interesting one and both Haytham and Conner are interesting characters in their own right, but I feel like their relationship was rushed. The beginning of the game builds up their first meeting like it's supposed to be this huge event, but then when they finally do meet Haythem immediately recognizes Conner as his son and the two of them are already at each others throats. When exactly did Haytham find out Conner was his son? All their character interaction is done within a single sequence and then the next time they meet they are fighting to the death. I just felt like I had missed something. It felt as though crucial story scenes were cut out and the narrative feels rushed as a result.

Ironically enough years later Haytham killed the man who trained him, because Haytham found out he was the one who killed his father and kidnapped his sister.

I love how the game gives Haytham sleek black hair in the beginning, but towards the end of the game if you pay attention you can see the streaks of gray

Even though he was a templar I really felt bad for killing him. You got to play Haythem and get to know him better. So Rest In Peace Haythem
