Damn! David Draiman can sing! ...one of the best on the planet imho. He can even put vibrato on distortion! ... which is incredible difficult to do. Sometimes he sounds sooo angelic... then on a dime comes the distortion and back... which is again so difficult. The man has such control of his voice! ... it's really amazing! I read somewhere that the sound crew had used autotune without David's permission in a couple places during the live performance (fearing that he wouldn't be able to hit the high notes due to his illness) and David was PISSED. He HATES autotune! Then I read another story in which Draiman denies any autotune is EVER used by his band during live shows or recordings. A LOT of people insist it MUST be autotuned because of his vibrato/texture/transitions, etc., but Draiman is a huge natural talent, both classically trained and as a cantor in childhood. The control, range, diction, expression, and variety of his vocals are simply luscious. Even his speaking voice is resonant and rich (listen to some of his interviews e.g. the one with The Charismatic Voice here on KZfaq). He hasn't led a charmed life - he had a rough start and many bumps in the road since... but he's a kind, thoughtful, soulful person, and this old lady is smitten! I keep looking for REPUTABLE quotes/articles on this topic, but all I find are blogs, layman's opinions, Twitter posts, haters, and other garbage. If you find a copy of a REAL quote from David or something from a credible source, I'd like to see it!

@@cflory62 10% (max) pitch correction is industry standard. In other words every artist has it to clean up the end of phrases not the entirety of his singing. Think of it as cutting the crust off a sandwich. For the record I think pitch correction sucks. It takes away the authenticity of artist. But the 10% is really very minimal and usually doesn't work if you can't sing very well already.

Paul Simon's explanation of the lyrics: “One of the biggest hang-ups we have today is the inability of people to communicate, not only on an intellectual level, but on an emotional level as well. So you have people unable to touch other people, unable to love other people. This is a song about the inability to communicate. It’s called, “The Sound of Silence”. - Paul Simon 1966 You can see/hear him say this before they begin their performance here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/esmqqd1837Swkok.html

Don’t know if you have listened to any of the many songs that Johnny Cash did covers of but it’s an example how the same song from a different artist can end up having a completely new feeling. And of course every song that Chris Cornell covered is amazing. Another favourite for me is a live version of Heart doing Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy center honours ceremony (there’s a video of it) with Led Zeppelin in the audience.
