I am glad you mentioned this. I am a Taino Native (ancestry shows me at 26%-32%) so we definitely have native still. We were also found in Florida and Georgia not only by spanish logged accounts but by archeologists. So we are not just from the Caribbean. I keep trying to explain that Latino is not a race, and I think we were separated from "Native American" so our populations would seem smaller, therefore we have less of a voice as a people.

As a Purepecha from parents of a indigenous community in Michoacán I sometimes find it difficult to identify as Hispanic in the census because mi cultura is indigenous but I also don’t put down American Indian not because I don’t identify as indigenous but because it says it for native Americans as in USA so I sometimes don’t know what to pick so I put down both. Of course other type of documents mention indigenous Mexicans for example when I was enrolling in a college class in high school but generally still ask if I’m Hispanic. So that’s my take on it hopefully you can see this comment and bring your thoughts into it. I’m from a straight indigenous background my family still speaks purepecha.

I will admit as a Hapa Latine, I’ve thought to myself many times meeting indigenous folk in the US that they look Latine. I assumed they descended from indigenous people from Latin America. Here I am forgetting how close my state is to Mexico, and Latin America so of course it wouldn’t be so surprising that the indigenous people look like other folks in America. I definitely agree that there is certain image that people assume when they think of indigenous folk. Some people just imagine indigenous folks as racially ambiguous, tan, with black hair. The few indigenous folks I’ve met looked completely different, my professor was White passing, a classmate looked Latine, and my other classmate looked more ethnically ambiguous.

I am from Europe, the average Hispanic person to me looks from Blonde hair/blue eyes to Dark brown, Brown eyes, they have very pale fair skin but tan in the sun easy, or have olive skin if they are from the deep south. They kinda look similar to the French and British. I have never met anyone who speaks Spanish and comes from the Americas, most Spanish speaking people I have met are from Spain.

The biggest misconception people don't understand is that we received our Hispanic/Latino name's & language from Spain because Spain did not bring women with them, so we received our Spanish Names from our Spanish/Portuguese Grandfather's who today we try to call our Grandfather's Colonizers instead of acknowledging the part in our identity that goes back to Spain because of American Racism which rejects the fact that Spain is Mediterranean & not technically geography European because Spain is actually located next to Africa but we can continue this "reject the colonizer grandfather who came over and gave us our name's game" for the American community
