Since independence, Chad had seen one brutal despot after another, and one of them was Hissène Habré who seized power by force in 1982 and quickly became the architect of a terrible repression in the central African nation.

Habre reminds me a lot of Nicolae Ceausescu: -Both were regarded as opportunists who only used ideology as a means to acquire power. -Both had the ability to appear weak and passive, and thus able to trick friends and foes alike into underestimating them -Both were extremely ruthless and brutal -Both were raging narcissists -Both cut deals with the US to boost their power and influence -Both were cruel tyrants who oppressed, starved and abused their subjects while having the nerve to demand literal worship from them -Both used their Secret Police as a private army/spy service and gave them total power to terrorize their subjects

That long conflict predated American involvement in Chad regarding ghadafi influence in that country. Yoi have to go back the pre independence Era between the south mostly educated and Christian and the north and east, mainly pastoral and very rural. I have lived in Chad working for a Canadian NGO's. Nothing in that County is black and white. To this da, that dynamic between Christians and Muslims are still there to lesser degree because of Idriss Déby who was a moderate Muslim and often a class of whiskey time to time.

I was a Peace Corps Volunteer placed 10 km from the Tchadien border in Cameroon. Chad was crazy... The ethnic group I worked with the Tupuri were split in half by the border. So I visited 2 small towns Bongor and Fianga, really not a lot to see, but the Capitol N'djamena was really interesting. Good market, food, and surprisingly a great beer- Gala. The colonial and older districts featured great architecture and trees until Deby had them all cut down because they gave rebels a place to hide. I psent more time there in the Deby years (96-97) and it was pretty scary too. I remember seeing a big US convoy bringing material up in 86. One disagreement, you imply Reagan was more involved than the French, I always had the impression, the French were running the show. There were French air and military bases in Chad while was there 85-87. My school once got buzzed by a French jet breaking the sound barrier. I hope Hell has a special place for those guys.

This is good. I’m from Ghana and I remember when growing up in the early 90s till now we have a very large Muslim Chad population who were always begging for alms in Ghana. They never go to school, tht don’t mingle and there are generations of them in Ghana. It’s later I got to understand they were refugees and your documentary explains this more

@thechuckrastchannel4911 They didn't outsmart anyone. They simply supplied money, weapons or even deployed troops on the side of whoever they wanted to win. They people they supported had their own motivations and hunger for power. They just took the help where they could get it.

He gave his boots to a man who carved animals out of wood, and his wife was so happy, she sent me a bowl she made from a gourd like substance. It is beautiful. We still have the carved animals my husband bought ( to help support him and his family.). Thank you for this video. Two days after he left, there was an uprising in the village ( rebels were fighting in the area he left), and I have always thought about that family, and what happened to them over the years.
