When it comes to katanas in this period, they were for the samurai same as arming swords or longswords in Europe - a backup weapon on the battlefield and a self-defence tool outside of the battlefield. Katanas as a symbol of status is something that came about in the next period of Japanese history - Edo period (1603-1868).

What was the main weapon typically used- the Yari spears? Or something else?

@@kevinneutzling8267 Spears and naginatas were popular with the samurai on the battlefield, but the weapon most associated with them prior to the katana would be the bow. They did start as mounted archers after all (although that is way before the Sengoku Jidai).

This is one of my favorite series of theirs. So well done.

Glad you’re checking this out! The sengoku period is one of the most interesting points in japans history and really highlights the risk of not having a majority force to bring stability.

Do keep in mind the EH series leaves a lot of campaigns and major figures due to focusing entirely on the Three Unifiers (a focus on all the major daimyo around in the later Sengoku Jidai would have been more balanced IMO, especially since we know who wins the whole thing in the end already).

I have a Master's in History. Let me assure you, my friend, it was NOT a waste of time.

Running your finger down the blade isn't proof of the it being dull. If you know what you're doing you can do that with almost any blade, even really sharp ones. But especially with swords, which are sharpened in a very different way than knives. I didn't know the Constantinople thing was a meme, but I didn't think you were serious. I'm going for teaching history at the high school level, no need for a master's (they really don't like hiring people with one for teaching if they have no prior teaching experience), I feel like I can make more of a difference at a high school than at college or middle school, and I won't need to deal with the same kind of office politics as I would at a university, not to mention I won't be forced to do work other than teaching just to stay hired (not the biggest fan of essay writing or research papers, and as a college professor I would have to do a lot of that just to keep my job, I might still have to write essays at high school, and there's continuing education I'd have to do, but it would be much more tolerable).

Another comment has pointed out- this series is good but due to the time constraints it has to focus on a few of the guys who end up on the most direct path towards ending this period. Check out other videos on the sengoku jidai. In particular Takeda Shingen gets some discussion in a later episode but really only as far as his forces threaten the Oda alliance which is a shame because he’s considered not only as likely the best general from this period but also one of the greatest generals of all time. His story is long and impressive before it’s discussed parts in this series.

Mori Motonari never even gets a mention even though his own conquests are happening at full tilt at around this timeframe (and he got everything he wanted right around the time Nobunaga marched on Kyoto).

Due to how brief the series is and how narrow the focus, I highly recommend that you check out the channel The Shogunate kzfaq.infovideos whose videos are some of the best one you can get on the Sengoku jidai period.
