Join History Hunters as Jeff explores the historic graves of Knights Ferry, California, which dates back to the 1850s. This cemetery was established shortly after Ulysses S. Grant came visiting in the 1852-54 time period. He also drops by a more recent grave, that of 1967 homicide victim Mark Ulrich who was murdered by Archie Fain.

Thank you Jeff and Sara. I used to work at the Oak Valley Hospital I worked in the admitting Department and I got to know Lucille Ulrich very nice lady it's so sad that what happened but she was a unique lady I'm glad to have had the opportunity to have met her and help her while registering her.

Thanks, Linda. We appreciate it! The whole Ulrich tragedy is just so very sad. Somebody must have done a real bad job of parenting Archie Fain as a child.

I just found this 2024, the Ulrich family has a family plot Grandma and Grandpa Ulrich had 12.chrildren, My grandparents Earnest (Jake) and Donna Burke also have a.family plot surrounded in brick, G&G Ulrich gave them 5 acres of land on the river on Orange Blossom Rd. Before they got there home there Me and Grandpa Burke would stay at G&G Ulrich house witch was the old bank in Knights Ferry. When my G&G picked out their family plot, there used to be several wooden markers, I loved them all so much, I was young then, I am now 66 today lol and I love Oak Grove, thank you for sharing, it's like visiting old family and friends!!!

Lots of people died in their 40s due to high blood pressure which was not treated until the mid 20th century at the earliest. So sad. My family lost 3 of my 4 maternal great-grandparents in their early 40s due to strokes brought on without doubt by untreated high blood pressure. Thank you for sharing!

JEFF- RE 1850'S CEMETERY A bit more history and a minor correction. Grayson Hotel at that time was on south side of river at top of hill - road ( now Shuper Road ) thru covered bridge where old Highway 120 used to run and across the road from ' ' 50's roadhouse ' generally called Buena Vista.. The original cemetery was on the hill above town where the current grammar school is. The Williams family ranch was about 2 miles east of Buena Vista - and I am reasonably sure his grave is in the oak grove cemetery. There is now online a register of names graves and locations in the Oak Grove cemetery.. And due north of knights ferry and slightly west is the the boundary of an early spanish land grant known as rancho del rio estanislao. There have long been rumors- unverified- that Grant fathered a baby with a local indian maiden who died at birth and buried ?? between Shuper Road and the Corps of engineers yard along the Oakdale irrigation district canal Have you done a story-video of Angels Camp and the jumping frog of calaveras county? or did you know about Puccini opera witten about that general area ?

We drive by Lovers Leap Rock many times on the way to Oakdale, the "cowboy capital of the world," and have heard it's where a man and his Indian lover leaped to their deaths because they we not accepted by their families regarding their interracial union. We have also met and tried to pet the Zonkey too, very unique!

Jeff - huge fan of the channel. My family plot was highlighted briefly in the video (2:40 mark - Fitzhugh). My family has been trying to work with the county to try and eradicate the ground squirrels which are burrowing under headstones across the cemetery. It has been one year of little or no action and the cemetery continues to go downhill. Curious if you had any suggestions a way to get more attention and try to restore the cemetery. Sad to see it go downhill. Thanks!

The story about the lynching reminds me of a similar story from 1891 Reno, NV where the night watchman Nash was shot by Ortiz. While Nash was on his presumed death bed the townspeople broke Ortiz out and hung him from the Virginia St bridge (same place wedding rings were thrown after divorces. But Nash survived the shot until 1905, in fact the bullet ruptured and cured his hernia.

Oh gosh, I never saw that cemetery! I love old cemeteries- visited the one in Hornitos many times. Let me help you a little with the German grave marker. This is a curious way of writing. Very homespun, for sure. The font used on that grave stone was popular before WW2. When I was growing up in Germany there still were some books floating around, printed in this font. It is very difficult to read. Hier ruht in Frieden (here rests in peace) Peter Gerckens (or Gerekens. In regular German words you won’t find ck following an r, l, or n. But this is a name) Geb is short for geboren (born) and very commonly abbreviated this way, den (the) 28 Septbr 1835. September is the same word in English and German, and is usually abbreviated Sept. So if the stone mason was running out of space he should have stopped there. The next line I’m having trouble with. I can’t make out all the letters, but it seems it ends in Jork, Hanover. There is a town of Jork in Germany, but it’s closer to Hamburg than Hanover. It’s possible our stone mason was referring to York, Hanover, PA. If the mason was German, and he likely was, he might have had trouble with Y and J. They are pronounced the same. That’s why it would be helpful to be able to read the preceding words. Gest (abbrev. for gestorben, died) 23 July 1863 im Alter von 27 Jahren 9 Monaten 25 Tagen. Died 23 July 1863 at the age of 27 years, 9 months, 25 days. The curious thing here is that July is an English word, the German word for July is Juli. There is an old way of saying Juli in German, but that would be Julei, as to differentiate it from Juni, or June. Juni and Juli sound very similar. So while all other words are German, there’s one that’s English. I’ll check out that graveyard sometime this winter. My friends and I like to visit the restaurant by the Stanislaus River. So I’ll try to decipher Peter’s headstone. It’s bugging me that I can’t read it! OCD? Gee, thanks, Jeff! 🤣

Everyone seems to refer to the area as Central except for me and Wikipedia...en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_California#Cities_and_towns_in_northern_California_with_more_than_50,000_inhabitants

Horse thieves are the worst. Same with grand theft auto dirtbags.

Kowboy USA yeah and we used to hang horse thieves. Now if someone steals your “horse,” they get a slap on the wrist.

@@jbenziggy today people hear of hanging horse thieves and automatically see it as barbaric without understanding that stealing someone's horse on the frontier could easily leave the horse's owner to suffer a death much more cruel than a quick, relatively painless hanging death. The owner without his horse could easily starve, fall prey to Indians or bandits, his family could die or suffer horribly. While stealing someone's automobile may not result in so severe of consequences, it definitely can cause a great deal of hardship in the form of lost wages, or even jobs, etc. Suppose I may be a little bitter. Like the majority of my friends and family back in southern AZ and CA, I've had a vehicle stolen. Although it caused myself needless hardship, at least I can consider myself fortunate compared to close friends who have had numerous vehicles stolen.

I sure miss California yet cost of living way to much. You need least 3 jobs to just pay rent on a dump.

Yeah, the average rent now in the Central Valley is like $2,100 per month. That's insane but that's the leadership elected here.
