Abandoned Mine Exploring with Tom and Julie

Жыл бұрын

For this abandoned mine explore we visit a historic tungsten mine with extensive underground workings. This mine has several enormous cavern like stopes, many ore drops and all kinds of interesting artifacts, including wood dynamite boxes, tools, cans and papers. After exploring the upper level we roped in and descended to the lower level. The lower level was an older working than the level in part one. In this video we explore the lower level where we find some interesting artifacts including a wooden dynamite box and half a case of dynamite. There are also some hand tools, a very large water tank and a cage like room.
This mine was discovered in 1917 with production starting in 1928. Total production from 1928 through 1954 was 272,591 tons and averaged a grade of approximately 0.5% WO3(tungsten trioxide).

Wow what a awesome explore. Thank you Tom and Julie. Lots of nice artifacts looked like a huge mine. That’s one you could get lost in. The dynamite looked unstable. Julie is a trooper for sure! She’s very brave. Being scared of spiders, bats and snakes is pretty common. I don’t mind snakes as long as they aren’t poisonous. Both of you are amazingly brave to be going through some of those areas you go through. Like walking across a 5-6’ 2X4” to get over a 200’ deep ore pass. I’m sure my bp goes up watching you two do that stuff! 😆

Thanks Tom & Julie! That's what all abandoned mines should look like! The souvenir hunters pilford them for yard ornaments private collections or worst of all scrap. Thanks for documenting them before all their history is lost. The square sets really had me pausing and screen shooting to enlarge the joinery! A lost art yet still standing after all these years and shifting. Just an amazing mine! Thanks again for this and all the other mines you've taken us along on.

There are plenty of museums and not too many mines that still have stuff in them. We leave everything as we found it or better. We have righted ore cars, removed trash, covered or removed graffiti, returned things to the mine that had been removed or thrown out and other things like that. The timbering and condition of the wood always amaze. Thanks for the nice comment!

Wow, that's one interesting mine you all found there! That one pipe you were talking about being thin looked very much like Sch. 10 black steel and appeared to be grooved on the ends, which would have been very common from the early 80's-on and would be fine for either water or compressed air (we in fire sprinklers use tons of the stuff to this day). Good Morning Tom and Julie. That was an awesome explore! I didn't have to duck once. Got a little thought for you on that "cage". I have a picture in a book of an underground stable for the burros or mules that they used for hauling. As big and as old as that mine was that could explain it. Especially with the concrete manger and/or water trough. That was a pretty cool find. Most often they'd use mules. People think they were blind when they came out from underground because of the "blinders" that they wore when they brought them out. They only wore them long enough to get used to the sunlight. Usually they only used them underground for 3-5 years, then they let them out for awhile and proceeded to use them to haul whatever needed to be hauled on the surface. Because they served so well, they were highly respected and there's even tales of mule skinners that abused their animals and got whipped. In Colorado (Fairplay) there's even a monument to one. Real cool to see such an important piece of mining history. That would also explain such a big door at the portal. In case someone forgot to lock them in, they couldn't run away. Probably how that big tank got in there.:-)

Thanks for watching and for the nice comment, Nancy. Digital videography is difficult in a mine because if it's too dark the image is grainy, and too much light gives a big washed out hot spot. Still photography is a little easier to get the lighting right and can give some better details than video can produce.

29:37 I have seen concrete floors with small side curbs in areas where explosives are stored to protect it from water seepage from below. Wire mesh to allow inventory from the outside. Solid wooden planking walls to prevent rocks falling in. Small amounts can be placed on a shelf, but large stock piles of explosives are too heavy for shelves and are stacked on the ground. 35:35 That water pipe has a "Victaulic" coupler. It was invented in 1952. So that is the max age of that pipe. They are still used and are on almost all building sprinkler systems. 43:40 A sour dough bread wrapper. Great explore... if my calculations are correct that tank would hold between 1,000 and 1.200 gal capacity for {drilling water), based on flat ends not on bowed ends... FYI: the dynamite is not that dangerous. It is the old fulminate of mercury blasting caps that are very dangerous the are real sensitive to shock, friction, and static electricity. I demonstrated this with a non electric cap and static electricity. It took a few tries from a Van de Graaff. We used a wire and had the cap in a bucket of sand. So do not step on them.

At 24:00 what Tom called a Siding it is actually a Stub Track, a longer one would then be a Spur Track. What most call a Siding is actually a Runaround. If it's a big operation where they are passing each-other, such as one set going in, and another set going out, then it would be a Sidings. In the train world where trains pass each-other is at Sidings. This is the simple example. I'm not going to get into Saw-By, Jct. or - etc. Jack
