I guess that no one remembers the Blizzard of 77... over 8 feet of snow fell in about 24 hours and combined with high winds to make drifts of up to 40 feet. I lived in a 3rd floor apartment, and the snow was just short of our balcony. In many cases it reached up to rooftops. The wind pounded the snow into the engine compartment of my brand-new car, and it wouldn't start until we dug out the snow. Cars that pulled off the roads were literally buried, and it took weeks to find and dig them out. Hope you all fare better this time, but never underestimate the snow in Buffalo!

Lived in the WNY area most of my life, this is just one of these episodes which hit us every 10 years or so. We will be back in business pretty quickly and most people won't be too effected except those who over-exert and suffer cardio/vascular problems. I LOVE NY, ain’t no place I’d rather be, even in Winter. I’ve lived here all of my 61 years and will live here until I die, we deal with some rough weather in Winter but the changing seasons are spectacular and we don’t have have to deal with earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes ( we get very few tornadoes in NY) , ungodly high temps and for the most part we have the kindest people that live here, we take care of each other here in NY.

It’s interesting from an engineering perspective, because in Minnesota (my home state), you’ll never really see a thick snow covered roof on a house. They are all designed to be taller and steeper so the snow falls off when it gets too heavy. I suppose they don’t build them like that out near the coasts because it normally isn’t necessary. Crazy how much a few feet of snow can weigh, let alone six…

Wow, years ago I helped clear the roof of a split level home, after which you could step from roof to packed snow. Then we had to find a spot to slide down to the drive. Not good for metal carports. If anything New Yorkers are used to snow. It's just more of the stuff they normally get. There have been some years lately that haven't received much snow at all. I guess mother nature's making up for it. That bowling alley looks like it might have had problems long before the storm hit. That line of truckers happened because as the firefighter said I-90 was closed. I'll bet Wegman's figured out a way to open.

It's a way of life here. I live in Oswego my whole life, and nasty winters are a cost of living here. We've been fortunate for too long with mild winters. Now it's like the winters I remember when I was a child. Extreme wind chills and massive amounts of snow. This is nothing new or surprising for us. We make due, clear out the snow, and go on with life. But investing in a snowblower and snowmobile are highly recommended. Stay safe and warm to all my fellow snowbelters.

As somebody who lived in upstate New York around Albany …..western New York is infamous for the large amounts of snowfall it gets during there storms……… I’ve lived in Miami Florida for the last three years so I have not had to deal with snow and Miami was fortunate to miss a lot of hurricanes this year……….. But in New York the one thing I wouldn’t do was drive through snowstorms selfish corporations get people killed and stuck in dangerous conditions by not shutting down their stores and expecting their employees to stay through the whole shift while a giant snowstorm is underway…….. Sometimes it’s a false alarm and you’ll only get 2 to 4 inches instead of around foot or over……. But when you get over 7 inches accumulated and less than a couple hours I think it safe to shut down the local area and wait it out the best part about snow storms is sitting inside warm and cozy and safe……… A lot of these people were probably stuck at work watching the snow from inside wondering if they’re able to make it home…….. And then there is just an unintelligent people who just have to take a trip to the liquor store or go over to a friends house and end up getting stuck because they go out hours into the storm thinking that it’s not too bad to travel just yet and then they get stuck……… Glad I don’t have to deal with snow storms anymore and I live far enough in land from the ocean to not deal with insane flooding from tropical storms or hurricanes

For NY that doesn't happen often but here in Manitoba Canada it can be every month or so we get one. Good thing about here is it's the prairies so the wind takes it all away almost just in time for the next one to come through. lol Still buckle down and stay warm people. :)

There were plenty of warnings going out that this storm was coming-I heard about it in the midwest a day or two before it happened. So people had time to get groceries and prepare themselves. And there were plenty of warnings to stay off the roads.

I'm from Montreal and in March 1971 we had what we called "The storm of the century". We received 141 inches of snow (11' 7 feet) in 2 days with blizzard winds. There were no more roads, no trains, no planes, no buses or taxis only snowmobiles. Everything shut down. At the time, it was a world record. Hang in there neighbors 🇺🇲
