On October 24th, 2020, I visited National Railway Equipment in Dixmoor, Illinois to see what was left of the facility. Back in August, NRE announced that they would be closing their Silvis and Dixmoor facilities. As a result, a large amount of locomotives were either moved or scrapped. Many rare locomotives were lost, including a Metra F40C. I flew my drone over the property one last time to see what was left. Thanks for watching! Like what you see? Subscribe! Another piece of my childhood gone. When I was a kid, growing up in Davenport, we often ate at Franks Pizza close to the NRE Silvis shop (I think it was called Chrome then) and dad and I would scarf down our dinner quick, and head over to see the old engines then. Back then, no one cared if we looked around, shop workers would even wave to us as we drove into the property. I remember dad getting the family car (With me in the front passenger seat) nose to nose with a high nose Geep. Good times.

I'm surprised those Illinois Central EMDs and that F40C didn't get preserved. I could see why a museum would be interested in the F40C, given it's similar appearance to the first AMTRAK engine.

Just did a quick google search on Metra 610. She was originally built as Milwaukee Road F40C #50, built in May 1974, Also had the "City of Wood Dale" on the side under the cab windows. Also I found out the IHB switcher was a former Milwaukee Road engine too. Built as MILW 2043, a SW1200, built in November 1954, interesting that both engines were built for the same railroad.

“Discovered” NREX Dixmoor a couple months back. We were in the LKQ yard next door and I spotted some vintage locomotive cabs poking up in the distance. Ran and photographed that entire row of switchers, including the ICG Geep. I thought it was so cool seeing those engines, especially the fallen flags, and I was hoping to return one day to see more. Sad they met their fate at the torch. Great video, though. Awesome job.

@@503railfan These places are notoriously difficult to cut any deals with. They have that massive amount of junk there because they want too much for it. You could probably offer them twice what scrap is and they would want five times the going rate. Some of that stuff is pretty rare and they know it. Had they had any common sense they would have had a big auction with a starting price at scrap value. Yet they sold everything at scrap value. Really a poor way to run a business.

K Poof AS A RETIRED AT&SF LOCOMOTIVE EMPLOYEE, I REMEMBER WHEN THEY WERE FACTORY SD-24s! THEY WERE THE FIRST PRODUCTION TURBOCHARGED 567 D-16 ENGINES AND THEY WOULD NOT STAY TOGETHER! THEY WOULD BURN PISTON HEADS VALVES , AND EXHAUST MANIFOLDS! THE FUEL INJECTORS WERE SET TO FIRE AT 4 DEGREES BEFORE TOP DEAD CENTER, AS WERE THE NON TURBOCHARGED ENGINES! WHEN THE PROBLEMS STARTED EMD SENT BOX CARS OF PARTS TO ARGENTINE SHOPS TO KEEP THE FLEET GOING! THEY WOULD MAKE REPAIRS THEN SEE THEM FAIL AGAIN, VERY QUICKLY! THEN ONE DAY ONE CAME OUT OF THE SHOP AND MADE IT TO EMPORIA, STILL RUNNING! THEN UPON ARRIVAL AT WELLINGTON AND AMARILLO WAS STILL RUNNING, MUCH FURTHER THAN OLATHE HILL WHERE MANY HAD PERISHED ON ITS FIRST TRIP IN SERVICE! THEY REQUESTED THE ENGINE TO BE SENT BACK TO ARGENTINE SHOPS TO SEE WHY IT HAD NOT DESTROYED ITSELF BEFORE ARRIVAL AT EMPORIA! THIS ENGINE HAD GOTTEN A COMPLETE 16 CYLINDER REPLACEMENT LIKE THE OTHERS BUT SURVIVED! THEY WENT OVER IT AND FOUND THE INJECTORS WERE TIMED TO FIRE AT TOP DEAD CENTER, RATHER THAN 4 DEGREES BEFORE TDC! IT TURNED OUT THAT THIS WAS THE ANSWER AND ALL TURBOCHARGED ENGINES WERE RESET TO TDC FIRING! THIS WAS THE CURE! EMD WAS NOT DOING ENOUGH RESEARCH AND WAS WANTING TO KEEP UP WITH ALCO AND GENERAL ELECTRIC 2500 HP ENGINES! HOWEVER WHEN THEY WERE GETTING FULL 2400 HORSEPOWER THEY STARTED GETTING MUCH ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS DUE TO THE 16 STEPS OF TRACTION MOTOR AND GENERATOR TRANSITION PROGRAMMING! ANOTHER PROBLEM SHOWED UP WITH MAINFRAME CRACKING UNDERNEATH THE MAIN GENERATORS A FEW YEARS LATER! MYSELF MAKING FRAME INSPECTIONS FOUND 3 CRACKED FRAMES! THE PROBLEMS WITH THE SD-24 FRAMES LED TO A TOTAL REDESIGN OF THE SD FRAMES ON THE SD40 AND 45 FRAMES! COMPARE THE FRAME HEIGHT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE 24s AND 40s IN PICTURES! THE SD 24 TO 26 REBUILDS STILL HAD FRAME ISSUES, AND THE TRANSITION PROBLEMS WERE CURED WITH AC TRACTION ALTERNATORS, BUT WAS EXPENSIVE TO DO! EVENTUALLY, SANTA FE GAVE UP ON THEM AND SOLD OUT THE WHOLE CLASS! THIS WAS NOT EMDs BEST MOMENTS, LOL

Reposting this comment from a reply I made since I do think it needs to be said. People on KZfaq seem to forget why a lot of locomotives seen here get scrapped, and a lot of it is because the conditions of these engines are too far gonr for either preservation nor operation. some of them like that F40C for example were pushing 50 years old which for a mostly passenger engine is well past it's intended life expectancy and had been worn out from active use and it'd be more economical to scrap it I'm sure at least one of the F40C's will be preserved anyways so hopefully this will not have been a huge loss. Sorry for the rambling, I just wanted to put some things into perspective

@MrAwesomedude808

610 had an electrical cabinet fire, and was the first f40c to be retired. That’s pretty much why it ended up there. Had it not had that, it may have suffered the same fate as the other sold f40c engines: scrap metal by 2007. And because nobody spoke up about buying it, it turned to scrap. Had somebody - a museum, a collector, a society - spoke up and said “I want this engine,” maybe it wouldn’t be scrap metal. Or maybe somebody did, but they ended up not wanting it because of the condition it was in. Or maybe NRE was unwilling to sell it. There’s a lot of possibilities as to why 610 was scrapped. Thankfully 611 is, as I read, in better shape than 614. Word from a metra engineer is that 24 metra engines are due to be retired at some point, and that includes 611 and 614.

@frankmarkovcijr5459 Жыл бұрын
@@ironmatic1 there is a massive surplus of power because the government continues to subsidize the Airlines and the freight Trucking industry. If all of that cargo was still on the rails they be running every locomotive that they could get their hands on. Many railroads used to have in-house rebuilding programs and the locomotives will come out better than new for less than half the price of a new one. The older locomotives represent a Time in America that was more prosperous than what we have now

To any of the foamers wanting / demanding that they should be / have been saved then I say "well you should have given NRE a cash offer thats worth their while, and a transportation plan to get the locos off the property asap" Only problem with that is I doubt the common carriers would being willing to tow most of those hulks dead in tow the hundreds of miles to whatever "museum" the foamers were planning on taking these things to.

I-90? You mean I-57? Clearly you arent from around the area, but keep pretending for KZfaq. Way to name drop, champ. This area has been in decline for a long time and Cook County taxes continue to rise. Not a huge surprise that another company left the area.

@@WindyCityExpeditionist rudly? Lol. Hey man, enjoy your trains, but your original post was wrong and your spelling needs help. Yeah, they built a gas station and truck stop at Sibley and Dixie on an empty lot that couldnt keep a Dunkin Donuts open. The corruption in the south burbs along with high crime and fairly high tax rates have destroyed commercial viability there. You cant blame them for leaving Cook County, sad as it might be. They werent the first railroad related company to do this.

I can’t say on all issues effecting NRE but can say the biggest issue was the big railroads stocking up on new locomotives that are just so much more efficient. They could park locomotives that weren’t that old and still save money by operating new ones. This has left our big railroads very heavy with power, which in turn has made secondary power for yard use and short lines plentiful. NRE has suffered because their rebuild services aren’t as necessary. Also emissions plays a big role, EMD has started a rebuild program with an upgrade to new emission friendly prime movers. When all is said and done, railroads can pick the power they want to keep and scrap the rest it’s not so sad, new efficient and emission friendly power is good for everyone.

That was a very interesting lash up was that a CSX or BRC Train and what was with the 2 switchers stuck in the middle that are obviously not owned by either one. However here are some things I will never understand. 1) Why did NRE have 3 locations in the same state plus another in nearby Paducah KY the old IC Shops 2) Why would Metra sell 1 F40C to NRE which they never did anything with and why would they buy it? 3) Metra then sold the other F40C's to some other company but they are all scrapped now but they actually got over $100K each for them way more than scrap value but they are gone now. However Metra kept 2 in reserve hopefully those 2 will end up at IRM and the RR Museum in Monticello 4) Why would Metra keep their fat slob embezzling President or CEO being paid a ridiculous State of IL Salary for all of those years that really is not a hard job. Thank God he jumped in front of a Metra Train saving IL taxpayers a lot of $ 5) Why would Metra replace the F40C's and BN E9's when they could have been rebuilt with that MPI Junk which is not a real locomotive Manufacturer they are a chop shop. EMD and GE are real locomotive manufacturers

During their working lives these locomotives should not have been allowed to deteriorate into the condition that they are in. It is cheaper to keep something serviceable than to let it rot and then try to fix it after years of neglect. It is possible but it adds so much to the cost. I remember the whole train for the new Fugitive movie the whole thing was $30,000. Imagine if you could buy your own locomotive the way you can buy your own semi truck and rent you and your locomotive out and pull loads just like an independent trucker. Next load any road.

I'm also sad to see these older locomotives go to scrap. But life is a cycle you're born you live you retire you die 💔 but in all reality it is an object made of metal one that either to be scrapped saved in a museum or left to rust away back to the elements in which it came into being.
