This has been a highly requested video, so here it is! I ranked some authors I love from 1 chili pepper to 5. There of course will be some variation, but I hope you enjoy!
My Spice Scale:
No Steam- Pretty Obvious, there is no romance, or even a hint of it.
Steam Puff- There is tension and maybe a kiss or too (Usually YA romance) or Fade to black scenes
1- Hands or Mouthy but no penetration on page. Heavy petting maybe but deeds fade to black or aren’t detailed. Illusion is used. OR, there is one scene and it is in the last part of the book. Gives you “lady blue balls”.
2- Deed is done, but it is very delayed or not more than 2 scenes. Maybe more flowery language is used for body parts. Only more conventional sexual positions and situations.
3- Things are happening and they are a bit more graphic, more often. Maybe a spank or a tickle. Wording is still more romantic for the most part. Maybe more positions and some dirty talk are introduced.
4- Fairly often and graphic in descriptions, as in the words used are more crude and aggressive during the act. Lots of foreplay, sexy talk, slightly kinky, anal. There is still a bigger plot to the book.
5- Erotica, soon, often, very graphic and explained. Kinky AF. Plot of the book may be just banging, on rare occasions there could be more going on.

I’m so glad you did an updated spice video. I always reference your older one. It still holds up but the new one is great too since there have been some new books/authors out. I think Alice Coldbreath could be stretched to be 🌶🌶🌶.5 to 🌶🌶🌶🌶 because she includes a lot of sex scenes but her books are longer than the average historical so it tracks.

Haha! Sarah, it is a REAL thing! Also, when there is interrupted sex more than 2 times in a book?! I get so agitated. It's not tension at that point, it's cruel.

It's been really fun to see your spice levels and I do love seeing how each content creator has a different range on how we view steam in romance. I have had one since I started a blog, just because many of my readers have different steam preferences and it's always good to know the steam level before going into a story. I do think in historicals, it can be more difficult sometimes to find more steam. But I definitely agree about Frampton, I love how adventurous she is in her sex scenes, it's highly refreshing. I am not sure if I have put it in the spreadsheet, but for more steam, Charlotte Featherstone does a great job with it as well. Thanks for sharing the range of spice levels for this sub-genre, this will be super helpful, especially for HR newbies.

Wait till you check out jess Michael's hers range from 3.5-4.5 for sure! When I first tried her books I pleasantly surprised since most authors don't go there at least in this sub genre

Definitely will try some of these recommendations. I would like to add in the 3 scale Eloísa James, her books have wit and many of them will make you laugh out loud. Grace Galloway can go into the 3.5 scale too and her books are funny and have some small level mystery and wonderful characters, the audiobooks specially are awesome. Also victoria Dale into the 4.5 scale for sure, her books somehow have a really good characterization for something erotic and fun to read.

Lyndsay Sands is great. Maya Banks has a good Highlander series. Be forewarned it’s unfinished (she has health issues) but it’s iconic among Highlander fans. Jayne Castel has a good series. I love nuns and Highlanders. The first in her series is a nun Highlander Romance. Lyndsay Sands has a nun Highlander romance too. Monica McGarrity (sp) writes Highlander too. Donna Fletcher writes Scottish Highlander too. I’m not a fan but I know she is a fave as well.

Stephanie Laurens - I would say a 3 on this scale.

Sarah MacLean (if you like more feminist leaning romance) Kate Bateman (dark but not as much as Kerrigan Byrne) Kerrigan Byrne (darker historical romance) Christi Caldwell (mix of romcom/darker themes) Tessa Dare (more romcom) Sophie Jordan Sabrina Jeffries All of these authors are regency/Victorian. Tessa Dare, Kerrigan Byrne and Kate Bateman are my faves but I think it’s a matter of preference. All of them are amazing writers.

It depends. Probably between a 2 and 3. There are usually multiple scenes but they are usually written very flowery and overly explained in romantic terms.
