Thank you for posting this video. I enjoyed learning more about Eldridge Johnson, the inventor of the Victrola Talking machine. :)

My great-great grandfather and his siblings worked for the Victor Talking Machine Co. in Camden. I have a 1917 model that was purchased new. Still looks and functions great. Has the original manual, felt pad (to clean the records), multiple needles, and records. I will pass this down to my children as well.

I inherited my great-great grandparents 1917 Victrola. My great-great grandfather worked for the Victor Talking Machine Co. in Camden and bought it new. The player looks and works like new. Has the original manual, brush, needle, and multiple records.

My husband and I were just handed down a 1904 Victor Victrola. It's in bit of a rough shape but my husband will restore it to its Glory. Thank you for your video. It's important to get educated.

The first internal horn phonograph, initially designated as The Victor-Victrola, was introduced in 1906. There is no way you have a Victrola from 1904, they didn't exist until 1906.

@@jonsheffield5033 Greetings, The term Victrola has become somewhat generic and most "phonographs" are incorrectly called Victrolas. Ironically, phonographs are actually Edison's trademark name for his machines only. The brand name, Kleenex, suffered the same fate, and went from a Registered Brand Name to a generic term. All brands of facial tissue are now, lazily referred to as Kleenex. If we were brand name conscious... "Oh dear? Please pass the Puffs!" Or. "I feel a sneeze coming on, quick, pass the box of Scotties!" In September 1906, Victor introduced a new line of talking machines with the turntable and amplifying horn tucked away inside a wooden cabinet, the horn being completely invisible. This was not done for reasons of audio fidelity, but for visual aesthetics. The intention was to produce a phonograph that looked less like a piece of machinery and more like a piece of furniture. These internal horn machines, trademarked with the name Victrola, were first marketed to the public in September of 1906, and were an immediate hit.

johnsons name was on the first issues of victor records, firstly on the small 7 or 8 inch discs, they were labeled as eldridge johnsons victor talking machine....? I know this because i have some of these one sided earlier rarer records...

Emile Berliner? I think he had a little something to do with the Victor.

He did, but Eldridge Johnson greatly improved Berliner's recording, pressing, and playback of flat disks. Most historians agree that without Johnson, Edison would have had the (record) playing field pretty much to himself.

@@1mctous It was basically when Berliner was banned from selling Gramophones in the US, due to a patent suit from Columbia (aided by Frank Seaman), that Johnson, as the manufacturing arm of the company, had to go it alone. By skillful maneuvering, he managed to force Columbia into a compromise deal: that is partly why he named the new company "Victor".
