The river Ganga has many bridges built over it over many years. The river Ganga, also called the Ganges is the most sacred river to Hindus and it is also the longest river in India. It originated from the Gangotri glacier in the foothills of the Himalayas. The main flow of the river enters Bangladesh where it is known as the Padma River and empties into the Bay of Bengal. At Farakka in West Bengal, the Farakka barrage diverts some of the Ganga water into the Hooghly River which flows through Kolkata and meets the Bay of Bengal. In its entire path of about 2,525 KM or 1569 miles in India, there are many bridges constructed across the river Ganga.
