Diagnosed with ADD. I relate to feeling brain fog, space, misplace stuff, forgetfulness, misinterpret, memory problems, preoccupied, daydream, trouble listening when people are talking (attention is everywhere), unmotivated if something isn’t a passion, bounce between tasks, appearing bored, Deja Vu, suicidal thoughts, mild paranoia, sensitivity, panic fear for no reason, depression, anxiety, organized, irritability. Hiya. Hope you don't mind me leaving this question but I've watched these series of vids with great interest (I work in mental health): I'm very curious about your opinion of the interaction of ADD/ADHD with various personality disorder diagnoses and if there is any crossover or comorbidity between them or how to separate one from the other in terms of diagnosis? Additionally, you describe Abilify (Aripiprazole) as a mood stabiliser when it's actually categorised as an antipsychotic and stimulant, with a common side effect being increases in anxiety and internal restlessness, so I'm unsure how this would work well with people with mood, anxiety or conduct disorders in reducing their risk? Many thanks.
@JefGazley8 жыл бұрын
+haildorothygale Hi there. Really good question. Some conditions are almost completely biochemical and some are more emotionally or trauma based. I see ADD as about 80% chemical and so treat that before I see what is underneath. However, since the prefrontal cortex is impaired in ADD and it manages the emotional part of the brain most people with ADD are very immature and if the connection between the two brains is very impaired then empathy is poor. So there can be many similar symptoms to the personality disorders and often there are dual diagnosis situations. Abilify is is officially an antipsychotic, but is often used as a mood stabilizer. It usually works great with ADD and I have not seen it increase anxiety. Thanks for the questions.

Can you have more than one type of ADD? I know I'm inattentive and I was very hyperactive as a child, I think I am still hyperactive - it's just internalized now, and camouflaged. But I also have symptoms of over focused very often. I have like every symptom of every type, to some degree. I'm so confused as to what I should do. My PCP just died and I was waiting on a referral to a psychiatrist. I was diagnosed as a child but my abusive parents told me I was misdiagnosed, and probably, took my medicine for themselves. They isolated me and abused me physically and psychologically. I was only able to get away from them when I was 19, and so now I'm trying to get the help that I need, but most doctors don't take my insurance. I experience almost every symptom he listed to a great degree.

@JefGazley3 жыл бұрын
I would always isolate meds or supplements. See how the Ritalin act and then usually 500mg of GABA is great twice a day. St. John's works well but could deactivate birth control pills. Usually 1200mg. is best, but add anything on for a week before going to the next supplement. Check out ADD-care which is natural for later in the day and evening.

what about add and social anxiety. anybody know how to deal with this?
@Asktheinternettherapist8 жыл бұрын
Often social anxiety is really anxious ADD or overfocused ADD. They are treated a bit differently and I talk about that a bit in this video and a couple of others. I use either ADD-calm or Obsessed care for that with my clients if I am doing it naturally or a stimulant and an SSRI and GABA if traditional treatment.

So I believe I have ADD and my doctor wants to put me on medication for it but because of having a personal history of reacting poorly to many medications and a family history of violence and suicidal tendencies when on stimulants I'm understandably very nervous about this. What should I do?
@JefGazley7 жыл бұрын
Jyrah, the only thing that activates the prefrontal cortex which is the key to focusing are the stimulants or ADD-care which is all natural. Intuniv is non-stimulant that helps calm so that people can focus a bit better, but does not activate the prefrontal cortex either.
@jyrahsorzi7 жыл бұрын
Jef Gazley I went to your website each bottle is $50 and the typical dosage is 1 to 3 pills every 5 and 1/2 to 6 hours if each bottle contains 100 pills and I have to take 3 pills every 6 hours that's roughly nine pills a day my bottle will be done by 12 days in and then I'll have to spend another $50... that's like roughly $120 every month... I'm too broke for that... Heck, I'm even too broke for $50 a month... and I'm pretty sure insurance doesn't pay for this... Any other cheaper suggestions?
@JefGazley7 жыл бұрын
The only other option is a stimulant and they usually do not have too many side effects and insurance picks up some of the cost Jyrah. Jef
@Not_a_number_6 жыл бұрын
Jyrah Sorzi Ask your doctor about Zyban. It's a non stimulant ADHD medication. There are also doctors who will combine small doses of non stimulant medications like Strattera with stimulants like methylphenidate. Avoid any remedy which is homeopathic. The principle is that it doesn't matter how diluted the treatment solution is (whether it still has any of the substance left in it or not) it will treat the issue. You may just be paying for water or sugar pills. Fortunately water is not changed by substances which have been disolved in it and then removed or we'd all get sick a whole lot.
@Not_a_number_6 жыл бұрын
Jyrah Sorzi Sorry, I forgot to add that homeopathy basically relies on the placebo effect. It will not help with anything your body doesn't have the power to heal itself.

What I find confusing is how all these symptoms - hyperactive and inattentive, an array of brain areas involved - are all the same diagnosis. It fits me, but is it possible that science will eventually say they are different disorders or brain types?
@terriashburn57404 жыл бұрын
Been dealing with so many troublesome symptoms all my life, time management, not finishing research projects, losing my dang glasses...daily.... and noone ever mentioned ADHD to me..... Noone would agree to diagnose my daughter when she was little, even though I suspected it, and now I find that this is why she couldn't graduate and suffers terribly with overwhelm. I am thrilled there are so many videos on the subject, but I didn't know until I went looking. Our medical providers never noticed. This MUST change! I hope to be a advocate for that!
@JefGazley4 жыл бұрын
There are two rules of thought. For example Dr Amen believes that overfocused ADD is a particular kind of ADD while Dr. Hallowell would say the person has ADD and Oppositional Defiant Disorder. They are both describing the same thing and they are the two best specialists in ADD. They would still treat them the same way though.
