Russia's and the United Kingdom's languages have not been taken into account so they have 35 and 11 different languages, respectively. Just Russian and English have been used for this video.

I prefer when there is a good mix. Not just national language songs, and not just songs in English (btw, just because a song is _in_ English doesn't make it an _English_ song though.). Songs _in English_ could be a part of a country's culture as well, not just the national language.

Technically Ireland could send only songs complete in English to Junior Eurovision, but since TG4, the Irish language broadcaster, does Junior Eurovision not RTÉ they only send songs partially in English. A nice nod that happened in 2021 was the netherlands where Jeangu Macrooy sang in Sranan Tongo. Not an official language for the Netherlands but a language that was seen as inferior and at some point even fobidden to be spoken in Suriname, a former colony of the Netherlands. It was the first time the language was ever spoken on the eurovision stage, and I can imagine, a great honour for Jeangu.

I much prefer songs sung in native language. What a shame Sweden hasn't sent a Swedish song since 1998. Such a beautiful language that we never hear any more. I really don't understand why they do it. Spain, Italy, France and much of eastern Europe seem to care for more about their cultural identity than north west Europe and Scandinavia.
@Gulamaja
@Gulamaja Жыл бұрын
It's because many Swedes really believe that a song in Swedish would not do well in the contest because so few people would understand the song and Finland not qualifying with such a beautiful song in 2012 did not help. I'm Swedish btw and this is what I've heard through the years.
@ddraven3180

@@Gulamaja I mean, pretty much no one in Europe understands Portuguese, Romanian, Dutch, Icelandic, Estonian or Lithuanian yet that didn't stop those countries from getting points from many countries and having success in the past. Frankly it feels like just a weak excuse. You guys simply have a bigger english pop culture in general and are used to it from the get go, thus is what you lean into when it comes to your choice at Melfest. That and, let's face it, most songs in Swedish at Melfest feel like the producers feel obligated to include them and the ones that are good/great aren't given the support by the producers that the english ones get, you can generally tell in Melfest what songs SVT wants to see win

@Ligma Baals I disagree on the swiss german part. There are many songs that prove you wrong. Maybe they're just not your cup of tea - which doesn't mean the language isn't suitable for songs. I hope someday a good one find its way to the eurovision stage - in swiss german. As the Eurovision Song Contest in its core is an event to celebrate diversity which is often being enriched by different cultural influences from all the different countries participating. And in fact swiss german is an important part of the swiss culture. As the french, italian and rumantsch languages are!
@dmn_gs7597
@dmn_gs7597 Жыл бұрын
@Ligma Baals hi to Ticino from Zürich then! Well, in my opinion there's also nothing that would make a more serious swiss german song impossible. Two examples: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nNN2apqWrLfGYJ8.html or kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gddmosSD0pPHZZc.html Off course these aren't Eurovision songs, as one is about 30 years old (Scharlachrot by Patent Ochsner) and the other one 300. (Guggisberglied, i like the version by Stephan Eicher) But nonetheless in my opinion they prove that swiss german can embody a lot also in slow songs. I think songs just have to be well written and well sung, the language has to be authentic and sincere, but i believe, that any language can work well! Anyways I hope next year Switzerland will be sending something different again - as three times ballads and four times male singers in a row is a bit too one dimensional.

Absolutely. I really hope that the last years' tendency to bring more native languages back to the contest will continue. Another language can really make a song sound so much more unique, original and interesting - who needs those (often poor) English lyrics, they're so boring. Different languages can be a big potential, surely an advantage, not a weakness like some countries seem to think.

In 1980 i think, it was one of the songs that got sent to the contest in the Netherlands, there was a song with a Sami preforming a joik. That year had Sami protesting outside the Norwegian parliament. To my knowledge there have been three songs sent in with Sami & joiking. What irked me a bit is that they live in the north of Norway, Sweden & Finland, but that just one was mentioned. Now, technically you could argue that a joik does not contain words & as such shouldn't count at all, but then none should be mentioned...

Did you ever wonder why Ireland and the UK did so well in the 90s? Answer, most countries (if not all) had to sing in their national language. This basically ruined countries like Switzerland or Finland, but really helped English speaking countries.
@Asa...S
@Asa...S Жыл бұрын
So everyone should be _forced_ to switch the language like in the middle of the song and sing some verses in another language? So all of the songs would be some kind of hybrid mashup songs that only exist in Eurovision, and no where else in the music industry? That's hardly diversity, if everyone is forced to do the same thing. I think it's so much better when the artists are free to write and sing songs in whatever songs _they_ prefer, and each national selection contest is allowed to vote for the song they prefer, the less rules and dictatorship the better.

It had been the rule at the start, every country sings in their language. But that gave too much bonus to the English speaking countries, so they changed it

@@Asa...S Eurovision aside, I think mixed language songs should exist more widely. It's common for artists to record alternate versions of their songs in different languages to release in different markets (i.e. Shakira often releases both English and Spanish versions of her songs) so why not combine them into one?

Sweden in theory has Finnish as an official language also but Sweden did dirty and split Finnish speakers as 2 language groups - Finnish and Meänkieli. That way Sweden did't have to recognize Finnish as official language. Meänkieli is basically just one northern dialect of Finnish. If you can speak Finnish you probably understand 99% what a Meänkieli speaker says. Finland has recognized Swedish as official language and we have had Eurovision songs both in Finnish and Swedish. Sami language is not official language in Finland but we have strong language support for it (most official documents are available also in Sami and there are news and other media in Sami).

With 'Absent Friend' in 1965, Sweden were the first country to perform a song _not_ in their native language. 100% native language over English but, granted, there are some great songs in English in the contest's history. I just think it makes the contest much more interesting when a country showcases their culture and language. I personally think 2015-2017 era was decent musically but slightly boring. A 50/50 split between English and Native language songs every year would be great to see and also not knowing which countries will sing in their native language each year. UMK have got it right to encourage a circa 50/50 split in their national final. I understand why people want songs in English as it is pretty universally spoken but native languages is part of what sets Eurovision apart. (This is the hill I will die on!).

I wonder if it would be Switzerland as they have 4 official languages or would it be a random country that has more lesser known minority languages. One thing about the video, i found it very interesting, but i think it would have been a nice addition to add the second to last time the country sang in that language as to see if the recent songs were more of a fluke or a more of a usual occurance. Among the many possible notes, just a few (most have political undertones, sorry). Former Yugoslavia: with the exception of Slovene which is sufficiently distinct to count as its own language, Serbian, Croatian, Bosniac and Montenegrin are varieties of the exact same language. Cyprus: is it really surprising that Cyprus doesn't send songs in Turkish? (And Turkey has never sent a song in Kurdish... wonder why) North Macedonia and songs in Albanian? Also, Belgium. True, German is official... in a tiny part of the country. Italy and Spain have dozens of regional languages, some of them officially recognised but they have never sent a song in one of those.

Some languages are more melodic than others, some great artists prefer other languages than their national one, some countries have more options to choose from than the others... So I think everyone should remain free to choose whatever language(s) they wanna sing in. And I especially love when someone can appreciate, learn and sing in a different language than their own or English.❤
