Although very small, I think seeing the Netherlands slowly reclaim land from the sea was a very cool detail to add. Even if it was just in the corner and most people wouldn't notice it.

Good video, even so I as a German would say Germanys history didnt begun with the Deutschritterorden /Prussia. Even so yes Prussia had a big influence like Habsburger Austria. To note there was many longer lasting other "states" like saxony or Bavaria. As well as Brandenburg wich later unified with Prussia

I think it was 962 when King Otto I. became the first holy roman emperor, this is usually taken as the earliest point of German history as it was Otto who successfully united and led the different tribes which spoke old high German dialects like Bavarian, Swabians, Saxons etc. against the invasion of the Magyar in central europe. This union laid the foundation for a common German language and identity which developed over the centuries

By paying attention to such easily-overlooked details like the returning of small territories occupied by the Western allies back to West Germany, you've really put yourself above other mapping KZfaqrs. Well done. Btw, it would be much more interesting if you also map in the territorial claims of Germany throughout history (for example, West Germany still considered the lost eastern territories as "occupied" rather than "annexed" and only renounced such claims in order to be let reunite with East Germany).

This isn't the history of Germany. It's the idea that medieval Prussia was the nucleus of Germany. It wasn't even the nucleus of the subsequent state of Prussia. The only thing the original Prussia gave to the electors of Brandenburg was its name. And by the way, Bismarck was jumping on the bandwagon, even reluctuant at first, when he came to the conclusion that those long subdued ambitions to create a united Germany might even be turned into a win-win situation for Prussia. There is a reason why nostalgia for Prussia is so very weak and Germany can exist so well and so unified even all without them.
@dnocturn84

"There is a reason why nostalgia for Prussia is so very weak and Germany can exist so well and so unified even all without them." -> Well, the vast majority of "Prussians" were relocated to modern day Germany by force after WW2 by the Soviets. So technically the people who inerit the lands of Prussia for centuries remained German and their offspring is still living in modern day Germany. It's just the location, that was absorbed by other nations, not its population. Of course, this creates very little nostalgia. Things would be very different, when Germans would still live there today.
@ottosaxo
@ottosaxo 2 жыл бұрын
@@dnocturn84 The homesickness of those people who had been expelled was immens. The lost countries in the East had been German for centuries, long enough to develop distinct dialects, especially in East Prussia and Silesia, which meanwhile have died out for ever and can never be revived. The old names of towns and cities are still kept alive in many street and ship names. Prussia is also a geographical region, that didn't change its name in German, though it's completely outside of Germany now.

Prussia wasn't initially German. Prussians originally were Baltic tribes that didn't have a formal country. Then the Polish king united a bunch of slavic tribes creating a formal Polish country. Prussians would often raid neighbouring towns in Poland, this would deteriorate their relations with Poland. Then in 1226 the Crusaders come back after the V crusade and the Polish king decides to hire them to fight Prussians. The Prussians very quickly lose to the crusaders as they were veterans in combat and they had very good equipment at that time - they had a lot of cavalry and heavy infantry. Then the crusaders gain all this land and germanize it, forcing Prussians to adopt German culture and language. Then the Teutonic knights become powerful enought to become a threat to Poland, so in 1410 Poland and Lithuania defeats them in battle, creating a Prussian vassal. At this point Prussians have adopted German culture, they are no longer Baltic related. They then unite with Brandenburg and dissolve Poland Lithuania with Austria-Hungary and Russia.

Quite impressive in general, some minor details are impressive compared to other mappers but I noticed some errors during especially WW2. Most importantly no distinction (in colours) between Military Government Occupation Zones and Civil Government Occupation Zones. Other than that if I am not wrong Germany still had an occupation zone in France after 1871. Edit: and no border at all between Reichskommissariats and simple occupations, which still makes sense to include.

Nice work. But and I realize this would have been even more work., one might have started either at 843 when the Frankish Empire split into France and Germany or as some books do even further back such as when the Romans first encountered the Germans.

Well done! Mostly much more better than other history videos did, because of the beginning point. There is only one thing to mention. East-Prussia was till 1871 no part of german empires. That is why Frederic I could become a King in Prussia an Frederic Ii became King of prussia, after he united the hole prussian land 1772.

Really good video, detailed yet not crowded and visually very well made! It just might be controversial to start German history with the Teutonic Order, as in Austria for example the start of "German" history is generally considerd to be the reign of Louis the German (Ludwig der Deutsche), first king of East Francia. If you take the Teutonic Order as the starting point for German history, for me it would be analogical if the Duchy of Normandy was considered the starting point of England, which of course nobody would say. Prussia is not Germany and Germany is not Prussia, that is why I would have called this video "History of Prussia followed by modern Germany". But I guess the video still does its job well, just wanted to point this out :)

Wessex is start of england. And the case of teutons, is that before teutonic order, germany didnt looked like modern germany. It was completly different, while hohenzollerns coming from prussia that came from teutons were the ones who split austria and germany, and created prussian militarism based on tetuonic order. So this is the claim i followed.

@@POGKPP Ok well I really don't want to argue that much, if that is your view on that matter and if you can back it with arguments it's fine. I just want to call attention to the fact that "The history of..." is always a retrospective construction based on current interpretation and standpoints (with political implications) so it should always be a matter of open discussion.

@@Kantianus The same thing is with Italy. You could start it from 19th century and unified italy, aswell as winse HRE or even Roman empire.. Everything depends on interpretation and everything would be right and good. I showed line of German "uniter".
