We end the Pokémon arc by looking at TPC's first system-wide restricted list, and how the Pokémon VS series started the decline of Japan's Pokémon boom. The Pokémon TCG is still here today--but how did it go from #1 to just another game?
Up next: Monster Collection.

8:38 I think you should lower the volume or energy level of the music you're speaking over. It's sometimes drowning you out and/or distracting in tempo.

That was a fantastic series. You should be proud of it. Subbed and shared. I'm of the opinion Gen 3 in it's entirety is the 'Golden Era' of this game. I especially loved Delta Species back in it's day, but all of it was pretty darn enjoyable. Even industry wide, it was really good. I did play on and off from Base to BW, but Gen 3 was the only time the game hooked me as a game. It just felt better made and better understood than what had come prior, while the UR weren't that far from the normal cards in terms of power levels. It wasn't ruined by the power imbalances and creep that have come with subsequent blocks. I've never liked Pokemon's UR cards, ex and it's derivatives. I've always seen it as a way to generate additional revenue, not a quality game addition. I found it interesting that it comes right after Pokemon scrambling to remain relevant.

Thank you! I'm happy to say that another episode is in the pipeline, so there will be more to come in the future. Personally I wasn't old enough to be super competitive in that period--I started going to big tournaments in late HGSS to early BW--but I always like to hear from players that were there at the game's peak.

Delta species was probably my favorite as a kid. Not competitively necessarily, but pulling a Pokémon with a weird type was really exciting

IMO the current state of the tcg is still big basics and broken trainers, only the basics are ex/gx/v. At least from a tcg online and local tournament perspective. Still, I have fun with it, and the card game of this era is probably the most nostalgic thing for me (you ever watch that vhs of the kids trying to teach their parents to play? Cheesy as it was I loved it). Really loved your series, keep up the good work 👌

I never knew about the history about the Pokemon TCG, very informative. Same with the Monster Collection TCG which knew nothing about. It would be great if you did a history of other TCGs. Especially most of Bushiroad's games, Duel Masters, Wixoss, etc.

If set rotation was enacted for Yu-Gi-Oh, I might never be playing this game today or any recent year.

Amazing work, I was entirely captivated this entire 7 part series about the Pokemon TCG. Wish more people liked playing the game more than just collecting, your videos are underrated!

It was fun. I played up until the Ex Deoxys and Ex Team Rocket expansions. I think I saw a little bit of Delta Species too, maybe.

Awesome series, man. This was a phenomenal watch. I've heard about this "Japanese Point" system for years. But could never find the particulars, I just knew it limited Cleffa and Erika's Jigglypuff. Seems like a very elegant system and diverse format. I wonder though, what counts as a promo? Because there are a number Promos with set symbols, like the Masaki trade campaign and the Trainer Magazines, more or less acting like expansions to to those sets. Are those exempt from the "one-of" rule, or do they count as Promos?

I love that ending bit. Not to eulogize Pokemon and get sad, but to make the point that there's more out there than just Pokemon. I think a lot of fans would be happier if they took that to heart, thinking about the card game, video game, anime, and brand as a whole.

you should do a new video on the rise of pokemon tcg as a total powerhouse in japan. seems a lot of designer's are changing jobs to pokemon and the gameplay has never been better.

Still got my blastoise deck from then and I'm glad to see my boi blastoise also be used for the meta back then lol. Also are u considering doing this series but for yugioh,MTG, duel masters, Vanguard, etc.?

Amazing that one small mistake brought the entire empire crumbling down. Was there ever an explanation given for why set rotation was implemented, or is it just something that's lost to time?
@lost-worlds
@lost-worlds 4 жыл бұрын
TPC hasn't ever publicly commented on it, but the likely explanation is that they simply wanted to remove the old power cards so Creatures wouldn't have to design new cards to account for the old ones. (Contrary to popular belief, they do actually playtest for balance.) Stuff like Bill, Energy Removal, and Cleffa, were simply too game defining to stick around--Cleffa's been called the best card ever printed for a reason. Rotation gives them a clean slate to work with every 2-3 years, especially with how Japan plays the game, where only the latest Base Set-on is legal after rotation.
@superilikeeggsyo

@@lost-worlds That's fair. The only way to deal with power cards tends to be power creep, banlist, or set rotation, and TPC picked set rotation. I'm just surprised that they felt the rotation necessary, given that the intricate system they'd spent so much time crafting/refining appeared to be working out great for them.

@@superilikeeggsyo a rotation can work Pokemon rotation system is very important element of the tcg, yugioh has a ban list but sell broken cards, Pokemon is one of the big 3 and Pokemon tcg is more respected than the yugioh or magic counterparts
@superilikeeggsyo
@superilikeeggsyo 2 жыл бұрын
@@haruhisuzumiya6650 I know set rotation can keep a game's powerlevel under control but watch this video again along with the early Yugioh videos (specifically, the one concerning the absurd powerlevels that game reached with the Exodia OTKs). It seems to me like we'd have a "big two" (MTG/Pokemon) and not a "big three" if Pokemon hadn't lost the good will of the Japanese playerbase back in the 2001. Pokemon cards are massively popular to collec today, but from my understanding the competitive game is not as large as Yugioh/Magic (still larger than niche TCGs by leaps and bounds, of course, at least outside of Japan).
