The Henry Ford

6 жыл бұрын

On this segment of "The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation," Mo Rocca speaks to Chief Curator Marc Greuther about the history of lathes, which are used to efficiently and precisely shape metal or wood components. The lathe featured in this segment is the oldest precision machine tool in the world, made by Henry Maudslay in 1804 during the Industrial Revolution. This lathe is part of the collections of The Henry Ford. Season 4 Episode 99.

I have a W. F. & J. Barnes 4 1/2 . Built between 1901-1906. All original parts except the peddle bar. It is a fantastic lathe. That old and I can still dial parts in to .0001.

The lathe is my favorite machine tool, and also one of the most important in engineering. Plus I like their complexity, especially their gear trains they use for different functions. It's a wonderful tool

It was actually a Frenchman in 1750 that made the first metal lathe .

There’s also examples of vertical lathes in India dating back thousands of years. See Praveen Mohan here on YT. He has some very intriguing videos.

The Maudsley lathe is another level up in both strength and precision. The irst lathe is on dispaly in Paris at the Museum D'homme. Maudsley made the irst really good surface plate. It took him months of grinding with three metal plates.

Too bad they didn't go into how he actually made that lathe. Simply saying "It was craftsmanship taken to a whole new level" - is kind of meaningless.

you can simply understand it is developed from simple mechanical mechanisms. The windmill, for example, has a bevel gear mechanism, and the bevel gear is developed from two disks arranged at right angles, and fitted with alternating prongs to link together... that sort of thing. It's hard for them to detail in a 3-minute clip

agreeable it’s vague in that aspect but this is a pop info video, it’s meant for people just beginning this subject and teaching the basics as it’s only a 3 minute video, intrigued individuals will surely dive deeper and search more in-depth explanations and thesis’s

You can see the lathe technology used in Indian architecture in centuries old temple. They just reinvented or copyed it and stole credit. It is same for radio waves and gear system. You can even see rotating pillars in temples using round stones as ball bearings. there are depicted proof in Indian architecture in temples the use of gear technology in india.

The oldest lathe machine was invented thousands of years ago in India. With that machine, Indian Hindus have constructed temples. It is laughable when you claim that western world invented the lathe machine.

It's laughable when anyone claims with absolute certainty X group of people or X person invented something because it implies you have all lost knowledge of human kind. Or use this as some type of window into some retarded narrative.

@Ante D because british stole 45 trillion pounds form my country. Give it back we'll see whose country is a shithole. If you check our history you can see how rich and great my country was in culture, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, art and textile. You come to our country in the name of civilization and ruined us and now you are saying it's a shithole. It's a shithole because you made it one. You created interpersonal conflict to separate us on every basis. I don't have the time to give you a lecture on the indian history. But it was a thriving civilization on its own before the british came along.
