Evolution of all RPG Maker games from 1988-2017!
RPG Maker, known in Japan as RPG Tsukūru (RPGツクール?, sometimes romanized as RPG Tkool), is the name of a series of programs for the development of role-playing games (RPGs) first created by the Japanese group ASCII, then succeeded by Enterbrain. The Japanese name, Tsukūru, is a pun mixing the Japanese word tsukuru (作る), which means "make" or "create", with tsūru (ツール), the Japanese transcription of the English word "tool".
The RPG Maker series has been released primarily in Japan, with later versions also released in East Asia, North America, Europe, and Australia. It is a popular game development engine, with hundreds of commercial games created using RPG Maker released on Steam, for example.

I am a sucker for RPG Maker 2003's GUI, it is so slick for me. So many of my favorites are made from this specific one

Despite the resolution and artwork limitations , some old rpg makers looks better than the new ones. Got triggered by that one with built in tactics system and the other one with sideview battles.

The graphics especially; like, 2k3 looks legitimately retro (I guess that's because it is lol), but really, people try to imitate the SNES look in newer RPG Makers and they fail so hard because of the larger resolution. Sometimes, smaller is just better.

I wonder if that is by default though, this video shows XP off as having side-view battles by default which isn't the case. I get that Tactics games aren't as popular in the west but damn I woulda loved a fully fledged system like that one to chew on when I used these engines.

They probably thought releasing overseas was not worth the hassle thinking it wouldn't sell well. Or they didn't have the budget to make an international launch.

@Sursurk Don't forget about that rockin' battle music too! Although there are a few RPG Makers before 95 that look genuinely interesting in design and features. I have only just seen them now. I didn't know RPG making games had such a long history (as far as gaming goes, they're almost as old as the first games, which was surprising to me.)

@@channelofstuff6662 But if they would have re-released RPG Maker 2 and 3 for PC. These would have been pushed to the limits, because it would have allowed to make 3D RPG games without the limitations it had on PS2.

I say the computer versions of RPG Maker are infinitely superior because they give you more freedom than the console versions. Plus, you can download other projects and resources online unlike the console versions but they’re still a neat oddity.
