Here is a history of salmon fishing and salmon canneries of the Skeena River. The lower Skeena River on British Columbia’s North Coast was line with over 26 canneries starting in 1877 with the Inverness Cannery. Inverness was situated in the Skeena Slough or one arm of the delta of the Skeena River before it empties into the Pacific Ocean. This slough is also Known as “Cannery Row” due to the numerous canneries which lined it’s shores. North Pacific Cannery and Cassiar Cannery still have substantial remains with North Pacific now a national historic site. Other than these two relatively easily accessible canneries, many of the other ones are boat access only and at different stages of decay and remaining remnants. The hidden treasures that remain and the stories they tell are truly amazing.

Such an important video. This holds down the historical perspective of our Province, and also the false narratives used on some Indigenous Communities due to this. There is a video from an Elder of Fort Babine, name Fred Williams and he explains how they destroyed our Babine Fishing Weirs due to the powers that be saying they had over fished. Some of our men went to New West Minister forced labor due to the disagreement of blockading back then. So much history. So much to learn from. Thank you.

It’s not that there’s a lack of fish there’s boom and bust years as fish are on a cycle, Im sure many canneries closed because of privatization like Jimmy Patterson and cheaper Labour cost, Dfo miss manages the fisheries… This year alone in 2022 it’s estimated 3.3 million sockeye went up the Skeena.. yeah they let the natives in Babbine seine fish them for Jimmy Patterson well the commercial goes on the coast barely get any openings
