At this stage I’m questioning why Bruce hasn’t been snapped up by a TV channel to present a documentary. He’s a natural and so interesting to listen to. The accent makes it 10x better too! edit: I've seen the replies and I agree with the majority's opinion that if Bruce worked for a channel he would be under much more control and not have the freedom he does now to decide what topics he covers. It's great we have KZfaq to watch independent content from people like Bruce.

I'm kind of glad he hasn't, right now he can make whatever videos & edits he wants, with some control I assume give to groups who he's partnering with for individual videos such as the museums he films in. I doubt a channel would permit him the same level of control he has now, they'd be the ones calling the shots at the end of the day. That's my worry anyway.

He has a genuine passion for our country and it's history, which is so obvious in his videos. But equally it's his way of putting it over, it's not a lecture, it's like he's chatting with you, personally, the "amateur" level, which you can't get if you have a film and production crew. I'd like to see him doing professional documentaries, I believe he'd be very popular, as long as he doesn't lose his own unique style. I do like Tony Robinson's programs on history, he has a similar relaxed style, despite the large professional crew that follows him, so it can be done

My wife and I lived in Shetland for 10 years from 1974-1984. The younger two of our three bairns were born in Shetland. It's an amazing place! We lived in Trondra, the small island just to the south of Scalloway harbour. I taught in Scalloway Junior High School and our bairns started school in the SJHS Primary department. It's all a long time ago, but Shetland still has a very important place in my heart!

Knap of howar (possibly the oldest surviving stone settlement in Northern Europe), Skara brae, Ring of Brodgar, Maeshowe, tomb of the Eagles, dozens of Iron Age Brochs, Pictish stone carvings, the legend about the Picts first settlement in Scotland, the arrival of the vikings, the earldom of Orkney, the Battle of Papdale, scapa flow in both world wars and loads more to discover aswell :) also loads of nice pubs and restaurants to sample some of our local food and whisky

My great grandfather William Joseph Moodie was from Weisdale in Shetland, he was born in 1869, & I have visited Shetland 5 times & it's well worth visiting. I went to Shetland in 1983, 1984, 1987, 2003 & 2004 & I travelled by ferry from Aberdeen each time, which is a 12 hour journey. I attended Up Helly Aa in January 2003, & it was quite a spectacle, & I recommend it to others. William Joseph's son Noel Thompson Moodie visited Shetland in 1974, along with his 2 sons Jo Moodie & Micheal Moodie & they all thoroughly enjoyed their stay.

@@davidgreen6490 yes indeed. But in all honesty I don't know much about the Celtic peoples of Britain and Ireland. Any information is exciting to me. Are there any books about this or websites? I didn't mention England because I was referring to the Celtic peoples and the English people had different origins but I do realise that Celtic people lived all over Britain but I thought they were forced away or moved from what we know as England or were assimilated into the new arrivals into England. So yes, I would love to know about the Celts in England. Boudicca was a Celt and has such an interesting story. I live in England on the Midlands so Celtic history from there would be particularly of interest to me. As you can tell I don't know much about the Celts in Britain and Ireland which is why I love this KZfaq channel about Scottish history. History in general interests me.

Although there are remnants and some impressive remains like Mousa Broch, the arrival of our Nordic ancestors swamped and smothered Shetland like a wave. Some so-called experts speak about the "Norse era" but the reality is we're still here(btw Up-Helly-Aa is a joke). My first ancestor is a man from Unst in 1450 called Hendrich Hendrichsson and hundreds of other Shetlanders can trace their family trees back to Norse ancestors. I'm glad you spoke about the oppression we suffered at the hands of a certain class of obnoxious scots as they clawed our land into their hands because it was truly a dark, dark chapter. The Old Norse name for Shetland is Hjaltland and there's a fjord that leads into Bergen called Hjeltefjorden. It simply means "the fjord to Shetland" or "the Shetland fjord".
@KismetLizard

Depends on what you mean with Up Helly Aa as a joke. Is it 'a tractional Viking ceremony'? No, it's a Victorian fancy, but it has become a cultural facet. Is is a joke in that people hold so preciously to all the jarls being male and basically needing to be related o someone to get in? Yeah, that's a joke.

This is awesome. So the family story on bio dads side is that we originated in Sweden. We migrated to Denmark and lived as Danes for generations. Then we migrated to Scotland and inhabited Lochalsh, and the Shetland and Orkney Islands and we fought over Skye, and that we were Mattesson with two S's in Sweden and we were Clan Matheson in Scotland. Other family members say this is not possible so there is an argument over descending from Clan Matheson. But my bio mom bought me a second dna test that gives the locations your dna comes from and mine does include Orkney AND Shetland islands :) Looks like the test settles that debate. Fac Et Spera!

I am so looking forward to yet another vlog of Shetland. A very interesting place to visit. I’ve never been to Europe, Bruce, but would love to visit all of Scotland, including Shetland. The history in your areas is so interesting as actually that is where a lot of Americans stem from, when you think of it. all over Europe, especially the eastern parts of Europe, from the far south up to far north.

We visited Shetland & Orkney back in 2019. What a blast we had. We actually stayed in the Valley B&B where you did. When I saw it on your video I had to double-check. We highly recommend it as a base to explore "the end of the earth". You must eat at Frankie's Fish & Chips! Fantastic grub fresh out of the sea! I'm thoroughly enjoying your videos! I'm first-generation American off Scottish parents who emigrated back in 1951. Great job Bruce. Keep up the great work pal!

Ah brings back memories. Was there a few years back for two weeks. Took a 7 hour train from Lincoln to Aberdeen and then a 14 hour ferry ride to Lerwick ( it was quicker for me to fly to the yukon haha) Shetland is fantastic place. Not been watching many vids on youtube for awhile so a good video to get back into the swing of things Bruce :)

Wow...Bruce, That was exceptional!...I relate specifically to this due to my heredity from my mum, I took on 49% of her full blooded Norwegianism with an addition 25% Swedish character. When I was born and on me dads side, Irish @14% and Scottish @ 12%, though the numbers are but numbers I feel a kinship to all these things and thank you and the Shetland folk for inviting you to such a wonderful rich place to share with us here. Rock till you drop my friend, Break some legs!

Another great and informative video! The age of those first walls dividing farming plots shows how much we still have to learn about the complexity of what we refer to as “primitive” societies. And what a rich historical tapestry the Shetlands preserve! Thank you for showing it.

Shetlaun is a lot more than 600 hundred years of viking occupation. Innse Cat has an Irish hermitage culture too , much of Scotland can claim a Scandinavian heritage, we all have a varied heritage! The video helped in that.
