4 жыл бұрын

The Black Death was the greatest pandemic in history. While it was estimated that 30-40% of Europe perished, world wide the death toll came to over 200 million. The story of the Plague is the story of a perfect storm where just the right developments in history met one the fiercest of killers with an equally powerful vector of transmission.

This is the first of three parts on the Black Death - we'll get back to the Reconquista in no time. Hope you don't mind the side journey. 1) Please don't forget to spread word about the podcast and share this on social media. Now more than ever - as they say, those who forget the past. . . 2) I usually create these videos while my little one takes his nap - thus I use headphones in the creation process. Try listening on headphones, it may be a better sound experience 3) HUGH thanks to History Marche, Embrace History, and Al Muqaddemah. Couldn't have made this video without their help. Please check out their channels -the links are below! In the meantime - everyone stay safe in our modern pandemic!

Fun fact: It was the Venetians who introduced the concept of "quarantine" to control the outbreak of the Plague. Ships that were suspected to carry the Plague had to stay in an isolated place for 40 days. In fact, the word "quarantine" ("quarantena" in Italian) is related to the Italian phrase "quaranta giorni" ("forty days"). Originally the word "quarantine" referred to this forty-days quarantine (the "quarantena") imposed by the Venetians. Nowadays, this word is used for all types of quarantine (regardless of the length/method).

@@rmt6933 well, COVID almost killed me when I had it a couple years ago, and I know a few people who are affected by it beyond just the couple weeks of a bad cold. Neurological issues linger with some I know. My own daughter was thought to have melanoma after, as it’s becoming known to leave some skin tags that look like melanoma, and could become melanoma. She had to have surgery to have it removed with a scar from the removal being about there inches long on her elbow, and they had to remove a lymph node to biopsy it, to see if it had been cancer how bad it may be. And, I know if many who lost loved ones from it, many who were in the ICU, and much more, which goes above the notion of being “as severe as the common cold.” Just the same I know many who were hardly affected by COVID, who may have at most lost the sense of smell, and taste for a while, or just a decent cough that may have lingered for a while, and some who weren’t affected at all by it, when testing positive. All people are different. But don’t spread around knowledge that isn’t correct due to ignorance, or whatever your reasons are.

This did not disappoint my friend: truly fantastic and factually accurate. I'm glad that you made a particular emphasis in distinguishing yersinia pestis as a bacteria (you know...given the viral obsession). I give it my scientific seal of approval! PS: just to illustrate how formidable a foe the bubonic plague truly is, the mortality rate can still be as high as 15% even with antibiotics. CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) still publishes reports on the plague during its seasonal peak - sadly, the plague is endemic to Arizona, New Mexico, and the rest of the 4 corners states in several rodent vectors (mainly prairie dog as well as squirrels and rabbits to a lesser extent). Thankfully we rarely see the pneumonic plague - it's far deadlier relative - outside of Madagascar.

Many people make the assumption that the plague is gone - its not. Its alive and well in desert states and places in the world as you have mentioned. As far as the viral comment - it drove me nuts to hear documentaries podcasts and videos on this subject and people either - don't realize that yersinia is not a virus - or even worse, they use bacteria and virus interchangeably.

Really well presented. Factual but not simply by rote list like so many others. The narrator really engages and makes it come alive... it's three dimensional. Like I said once, this and Dan Carlin's are the ones that keep you listening past the end note. Thanks so much!

@@FlashPointHx Thanks for getting back to me, Just a small matter... I do love your channel as always but best of all when the music remains anciently classical and subdued, as per your use of Ravels 'Bolero' in the Punic Wars: It's more menacingly haunting and appropriate. Most of your contemporaries like 'kings and Generals' et al, over ride your main message with bombastic over orchestrated computer soft ware music featuring heavy percussion. [ copying G. Holst 'the Planets' . It ends up usually sounding similarly generic and overdone. After a few minutes listeners like myself become fatigued and tune out. They all tend to sound like a cheap action movie or computer game. Anyway, apologies, I don't mean to brow beat you... your skills and timing as a voice artist, historical enthusiast and writer are among the best. Good luck and I promise I will always be a fan of what you do! [ signed, a Canadian Historical Musical Composer]

Yersinia pestis is alive and well. There are cases of plague that exist today. There was also an incidence of someone finding vials of small pox just laying around. Biological warfare is truly unsettling.

@@FlashPointHx Interestingly, the Rockies of western USA have many things in common with the plague's homeland, the Tien Shan mountains of Kyrgystan. The wildlife now has plague endemic to the region that has been there now for over forty years. 1. Mountainous 2. Rugged 3. Continental climate 4. Semi-arid 5. Coniferous forest, grassland, and mountain biome. 6. Interior highlands 5. Abundance of smaller mammals.

Do you remember the goal of Thanos in the Avengers, to kill 1/2 of everything, and thus free up resources for a bright new world????? Well, I think that was inspired by the Black Plague. True, it was horrific, and killed 1/2 of people. This new shortage of people changed Europe. 1.) Labor became more valuable. Serfs were now sought by other Lords. The Serf system broke down, and people became free to move. 2.) Thus, towns grew. Also, pay grew, since labor was more valuable. Europe became free because of the Black Death. Ended Serfdom, creating the situation enabling the Renaissance. So, Thanos wasn't such a bad guy after all, was he??

Nice video and you have an interesting way of explaining the history and effects and thanking you especially for clarifying the correct Rat species! The common Brown Rat People are used to seeing (Rattus Norvegicus) weren't even in Europe at that time period and hadn't been proven to spreading this past plague! Other flea infested Rodents could've included Hamsters and Gerbils as well. Thank you again, from a Fancy Rat Pet owner (Rattus Domesticus) ;)

I heard somewhere that Mongol commander "Janibeg" is a direct descendant of Genghis Khan. So Janibeg's history with the Mongol Empire and warfare much is deeper than first realized. It was his bloodline. No doubt his military upbringing and inherent genius compelled him to catapult the cadavers over Kapha's wall!
