Great video and I loved the history lesson. Unfortunately in the US we are barely taught our own history and never anything about British history. In addition I really appreciate the Sportster history lesson, being a bit of a Sportster fan myself.

Morning Ratjaw (there's a curious one) - thank you for your kind comment. I am stunned that 'in the US we are barely taught our own history'! Gasp :-0 I thought that America patriotism would be a natural catalyst for historical investigation? Wow - how wrong am I? Anyway, thank you again for voicing such nice things about my videos. Cheers, Chris

I've been binge-watching these series, and I'm loving it. Very interesting and educational. I subscribed, but you deserve more views. Kind regards from a proud 1200 Sportster Iron owner in Barcelona.

Thanks for that Marco. I agree that I deserve higher viewing figures, and subscribers, and lots of money. Sadly, not the case, but I am very beautiful... I'm not sure anyone has binged me before, so thanks for that too. And, erm, good luck with it... Cheers again Marco, Chris

Regarding that Ugly, woefully undersized fuel tank. It isn't a "Sportster" tank at all! It was lifted off of the H-D Hummer (165cc single) and installed on the off-road use only 1958 XLCH models, and all XLCHs to follow to reduce fuel capacity and weight without producing a completely new fuel tank. People LIKED it, and it would soon completely replace the larger capacity "Turtle" tank that was on the K model H-Ds although the Turtle tank was still optional for several years, and even was stock on some Sportster special models. Love your' videos! Regards from a 1966 XLCH owner in New England.

Afternoon Dean - yes, many love the 'peanut' style tank, whichever capacity it is. (From what I can see, the Hummer 125/165 had a 1.754USG/6.6L tank, but the XLCH from 1958 on had a 2.25USG/8.5L tank.) Thank you for saying you love my videos! It helps, a little, over-come the jealousy I feel for your XLCH. Cheers, Chris

If slavery is to be mentioned in a synopsis of British history, it needs to be added that in 1830 it was banned throughout the Empire, and that it was the first country in the West to do so. To execute this change in policy, it took out massive loans from the Bank of England to purchase every slave in the Empire to free them - a debt not repaid in full until 2014 when the final payment was posted.

Afternoon Andy - thanks for disagreeing constructively (not everyone is so courteous!). I would note though, that the 'compensation' you mention was paid to wealthy slave owners, not to the slaves themselves. That debt has never been paid by any country. We should be proud to be British - I am - but we should also acknowledge our past evils, otherwise we're guilty of saying "my country, right or wrong". I'd guess you'd agree that is not the way to go. Cheers mate, Chris

The mid-60s Sportsters are the most attractive motorcycles ever produced. That flat bottom tank is a feature in the horizontal design elements used throughout...even in the headlamp bib. It's these horizontal design features that provide the look of speed and power...much like a graphic artist uses trailing lines to indicate a fast moving object. All of the bulbous competitors, at the time, appeared snail-like.

Morning, may I call you Panama? In another video, Big Al commented that new Sportsters are 'plumpy' compared to old ones. I imagine this is something you'd agree with! I've never thought of it like this before, but the 1960s bikes were all quite 'rounded'. I suspect my age - I grew up with 'real' motorcycles all being Japanese - and nationality govern my perception but I've never thought of the Sportster as a sports bike per se, as the weight and handling didn't really lend themselves to sport riding. (Those brave souls who did race the Sportster on the road and (gasp!) off road, must have been heroically crazy!) Because the Sportster was a strictly North American phenomina until AMF, it never registered as a racing (that is, TT) contender. I'll have to look at some more pictures to 'see the fast' in those early Sportsters. Cheers, Chris

Being English. I own a sportster and two FLSTNs. Harley is such a beautiful bike maker. I’m also born in the mid 60s and am English by birth. And I also love my birth country. England is truly a wonderful country with a glorious past, not just its motoring manufacturing! I’m appreciating the deep dive into the Sportster, thanks! But why do you need to denigrate English history! It’s unnecessary and inaccurate. It is coming from a feeling of guilt I suspect and it’s unnecessary and is a betrayal I feel. It’s ok to be white! I had an English white mother and Jamaican black father and was born and raised in Barking so have an insight into the English working class and the wider culture. I have nothing but gratitude to the English for welcoming my father and supporting us as a family. We have such a rich past and have heroically fought for justice, liberty and culture and civilisation. I am blessed and lucky to be English! And the cherry on top is owning a Harley 😊

Afternoon Sat (can I call you that?) - thank you for being so nice about my videos. And, you're right we British do have a 'wonderful country with a glorious past'. I appreciate your patriotism, and your articulate reply here, thank you. I don't mean to 'denigrate' our history, but I will not blow the 'my country right or wrong' flag. So, I too celebrate Britain, and Britishness ("I wouldn't want to be anything else..."), but our history is not all positive. However, your point is valid, and thank you for being so positive! Cheers, Chris

Apologies yet again...... 🙄 The oval air cleaner housing was all about extra airflow, it had nothing to do with intake air noise. And, in the US we never called it a "ham can," that name was reserved for the larger unit that replaced it later. I know these things having been an active Harley rider during the time period. I've had a 45 WL, which started out as a basket of parts, a 1978 FX, and a 1983 XLX, one of the worst Ironhead Sportsters ever created. (ask me how I know)
