The French Indian war was where the war of ambush and long range rifle fire was first used in America.

They still used spherical bullets, but the rifles had significantly greater range and accuracy. Makes me wonder if the conical bullet wasn't already part of the idea but only maybe set aside for practical reasons. Ball ammo was common enough, and accurate enough to put off the comparatively difficult process of experimenting with conical bullets.

During the Civil War, Jack Hinson, who ended up being a sniper on the Confederate side, used what was essentially a percussion Kentucky rifle in .50 and was shooting Union troops on passing boats on the Tennessee river at 300 yards and beyond.

It’s a Pennsylvania Long Rifle. The first rifles made in the Lancaster area were based on German Jaeger rifles. The Philadelphia Art Museum has a great collection of early examples. The speaker is not terribly well versed in the subject. There is a lot of bad information in this podcast.

Right? How could it be the "Kentucky Rifle" if Kentucky didn't even exist when this rifle was being used to forge our nation?

Hey Darby..... The people of Pennsylvania JUST ELECTED SOMEONE WITH SEVERE BRAIN DAMAGE TO CONGRESS. Your state is a dump full of ignorant fools who hate America. Thusly, Pennsylvania does NOT deserve to have anything of interesting historical American value bearing its name in this modern time.

It’s a Pennsylvania Long Rifle. It was made by Martin Meylin in Lancaster Pennsylvania. Kentucky wasn’t even a thought when it was made.

I suppose that if it was really new, like late 1760s there simply wouldn't have been enough of them around to make a difference because they couldn't yet be practically mass produced quickly enough. 1730s to 1770s gives enough time for the slow production to provide enough units which could, when combined with patriotism, make an impact.

The rifle was a direct decendent of the German jager rifle. It was not a sudden invention. The rifles were NOT common, they were far too expensive. Almost all colonists used the standard non-rifled musket. There is no evidence whatever that the long rifle turned the tide of any battle. Lots of misinformation here. Lots.

I really believe the reason these rifles survived so long (and still appeal to many today) was economics. On the frontier, buying or trading goods - including gunpowder, percussion caps, brass, etc. - was scarce. With a decent supply of black powder and some lead, a frontiersman could provide for and protect his family effectively without worrying about running out of the above expendable items. Newer firearms may have been technologically superior, but they were not economically superior.

Wow... this guy needs to do some research. Most of this is so inaccurate, please read Peter Alexanders "The Gunsmith of Grenville County" for a great short history of the Long Rifle.... But this is just bad....

Idk why, but when I hear them called kentucky Rifles, I get annoyed because kentucky didn't even exist until 1790s. American long rifle? Fine. Pennsylvania rifle? Fine. Lancaster rifle? Mmmaybe. Kentucky? Sounds cool, not realistic.

Good news they are all black powder (obviously) so you don’t need a FFL dealer but you do need to be 18 years old. The harder thing to find right now is percussion caps. Especially number 11. If you wanna save money but you lose reliability go flintlock.
