An important note: many people are pointing out in the comments that Vietnam fought the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia-this is correct but after the Vietnam war. When I refer to the North Vietnamese/Viet Cong supporting the Khmer Rouge this is in 1970 before the end of the war, in the wake of operation menu implemented by President Nixon.

the only war between Viet-Laos which I ever know is Le Thanh Tong campaign ( 1477-1480). Under Viet's view. It is because Laos support Bon Man ( Muang Phuan)'s rebellion. Le Thanh Tong be considered as the greatest king of Vietnam's history. However, he is very brutal king when at war with any other kingdom. He almost destroyed Lanxang until Lanxang fight back, with the help of Lanna ( and Malay - follow Malay's record). Both Viet and Laos said that they won the war. * Under Le's view during that period, they see Laos as the betrayer. That is because during Vietnamese uprising against Chinese ( 142X), Laos supported Viet, but suddently allied with Chinese and attack Viet. Although the attack be leaded by some local chieftain, Le dynasty usually see it as the idea from Lanxang kings and some betrayer Vietnamese. ----------- That is the most terrible war between two nations. Actually, don't have many Vietnamese today really know about that war. They usually see Laos is mysterious nations, and don't really know anything about Laos.

@@sephikong8323 You really are a very knowledgeable person about our country. If you have read about Vietnam's history, in 1979, China attacked 6 provinces of the northern border of Vietnam, Vietnam pushed back. It was because of the forest and the mountain (it was like a shield to protect my country). France also failed at the Dien Bien Phu battle (its topography is like a pan, above is a forest). One more thing, the climate of Vietnam, tropical rains, many insects in the forest. , the US military was seriously ill.

@@sephikong8323 But I think the most important thing is still the spirit. In our ancient history, the Han people have assimilated all the ethnic groups around them (so you see China is very large) but only Vietnam escaped. Vietnam's first uprising was that of two women against the Han king. Finally is Ho Chi Minh, he had a girlfriend, but because he wanted to help Vietnam escape the rule of French colonialism, he forgot his love. Finally, he does not have a family, every Vietnamese is his child. In 1968, the Vietnamese army died a lot before the attack of the US military. He was very sick and died a year later (1969).

@@chip7335 I am not saying that the people has nothing to do with that, the people is always the core part of a country and its history, but geography does help a lot especially when it comes to warfare. The Vietnamese people probably would not have been able to defend itself the same way had it lived in the steppes for example. But on the opposite not all people would be able to use their geography in the same manner

The grace of fatherhood is like Thai Son mountain and the fidelity of motherhood is like Trong Nguon river run. All both places are in China. Why? Really been interested in this lately. My grandpa fought in the Vietnam war as a soldier for the US Air Force and I recently started dating a girl who’s family is from northern Vietnam, it really has opened my eyes a lot being around her and hearing her point of view on the war and the current state of Vietnam. I really wish they would teach students about the war in the US so we can learn from the horrible events that took place but everything about it is just swept under the rug. I think it is amazing how Vietnam survived Chinese and French colonialism and also an invasion from the US. I’m gonna spend the next few years of my life learning the language and I will eventually travel there

As a nothern viet, I'm glad your gf thaught you horrible things that american did that were swept under the rug. Things like My Lai or like the testimony you can watch on youtube: "vietnam war#3(rape&murder)" were kept unpopular from the mass. I think any ethnicity can have bad people, vietnamese too. But I do notice US teach history not to avoid repeating mistakes, but it is to manipulate and teach wrong doings of others while portraying themselves as victims or heros. I'm not saying americans are bad. I just don't like the way they teach to their own people like how they don't show parts of history that make them look bad, or undermine the things they did bad while describing wrong doings of others in a more detailed and horrific manner(while they did exact same things), or the hollywood movies during the 20th century portraying asian males as agressive vilain who abuse asian women while american male save her. You can also search on youtube: "Vietnam War Body Count Was Just Bullshit" as I notice many americans being proud of killing. In summary, both sides did bad, but I dislike how american media portray reality by pointing fingers and not looking in the mirror.

Pre-historic Vietnam was home to some of the world's earliest civilizations, making the Vietnamese, one of the world's first peoples who had practiced agriculture. With an intriguing history of achieving what others deem impossible, Vietnam is a country like no other. The New York Times wrote, "Vietnam has a history of resisting the world’s great powers. It threw out the French after almost a century of colonization and then handed the United States a humiliating defeat. That same spirit has emerged in its war of wills, this time over China’s attempts to project its growing power closer to Vietnam’s shores." The deadly anti-China riots in Vietnam in 2014 as the result of China's illegal placement of its oil rig in Vietnam's waters, drove more than 40,000 Chinese nationals back to their mainland China. The history of Vietnam’s formidable people and defenses dated well before the Vietnam War and even before the Mongol invasion of Vietnam in 13th century. In fact, it dated back to the war against the Chinese invasion of Vietnam in 300 BC. However, the famous battles of the Vietnamese army against the mighty Mongol Empire have become the most celebrated episode in the history of Vietnam. Scholars regard the Mongol conquest as one of the deadliest invasions in human history. The unbeatable Mongol army had conquered half of the known world, but eventually given itself up to a small country named Dai Viet (currently Vietnam)! In less than 80 years, the Mongol Empire encompassed entire land from the Pacific Ocean to the Danube River. After having successfully conquered Eastern and Central Europe, Middle East, Central Asia, Great Russia, all of China in the 13th century, the powerful Mongol Empire immediately started their southward expansion in Southeast Asia where it finally met its match. Even China was agonizingly defeated and completely conquered by the mighty Mongol army, which by contrast was bitterly defeated 3 times by the resilient Vietnamese. The decisive victory of the Vietnamese army over the invading mighty Mongol army in the bloody battle at the Bach Dang River in 1288 eventually brought an end to the Mongols' invasion of Dai Viet (currently Vietnam) as well as their dream of conquering the entire world. If the Mongol Empire had learned that the Chinese Empires before them had been bitterly kicked out of Vietnam after their 10 centuries of occupation while completely failing to assimilate the Vietnamese, the mighty Mongol Empire would have never even thought of invading Vietnam.

Honestly, how many history that have such strong woman personas like Vietnam? I’m maybe ignorant, but feminists should learn from woman in Vietnam. Woman in Vietnam fought for their own rights using their own wealth and intelligence. Until now, feminist trend is not in Vietnam yet, but I felt woman in Vietnam is stronger than many other countries. Woman just start to work and treat their husbands like their little kids (also give them no authority in family), not going around yelling “make me a sandwich”, lol!

While We Khmer was the strongest empire we also invaded champa, lavo keep stand for thousand year , Yet since the war between Khmer Tai and Viet. we lost the most to our civil war. I was 13 when our family (all 5) got off our cruise ship in Saigon and spent the day there, This was June 6 1963, and we left the day before the 1st Buddhist monk poured kerosene on himself and lit himself on fire. I remember seeing the news in the paper when we got to Singapore the day after! This was during the time of the S. Vietnamese Dictator Diem. This made me even more a pacifist of NOT getting involved in Vietnam at all - I saw all the hate for Caucasian people by the locals in Saigon! There was no freedom and that was why Diem got assassinated in Nov/1963. I saw all this BEFORE the US military even got involved in 1964 against all advice not to!

Polpot is the genocide dictator, China and Thailand supported Polpot, only Vietnam was subjected to abusive criticism and sanctions, but Vietnam still helped Cambodia to get rid of Polpot, I read an article. The News Time newspaper stated that Vietnam alone had just hit the southern Polpot and the Chinese north, the whole country was embargoed. How can Vietnam do that? they won. I also know Vietnam helped Cambodia regain the temple from the Thailand-Cabodia border war, helping Laos to protect the border in the Thailand-Laos war.

It's a good story but we didn't help them that much either. My grandpa was part of the people that invaded (for lack of a better word) Cambodia. Older Cambodians still hold a grudge over the puppet government and there's still a conspiracy theory that the Cambodian government is still being controled by Vietnam.

XDranzer000 from your comment you’re NOT Vietnamese. Usually Chinese sounds like you. Vietnamese never started anything, we only defend. Chinese started wars with Vietnamese since thousands years ago for thousands years. It’s still happening NOW in Vietnam invading and killing Vietnamese including stealing our natural resources, destroyed our lands and sea life. “Doesn’t concern directly...” your words right? proved you are Chinese but pretend to be neutral. I agreed with you about Nguyen Quang Hung being young.

My dear friend the feeling is mutual, Vietnamese toward the Polish people. We have so much love, sympathy and respect for the Polish people. The resilience of the Polish to withstand adversity matched that the resilience of the Vietnamese people. 2 years ago I have visited Poland on my pilgrimage through Krakow and Warsaw, that trip has changed me forever. Especially my stop at the Shrine of Divine Mercy. First, what a beautiful country!!! Second, I’ve watched the Polish people with their Catholic faith and tradition both young and old. Especially I’ve witnessed the people love and venerated to Black Madonna of Częstochowa, at a very early morning and a late night mass. Around 9:00pm The church’s courtyard was still fully packed with young adult and children, my heart was full of joy and for a few minutes I thought of my country Vietnam. I prayed that one day I can see the devotion and love for God throughout Vietnam too. May God protect Poland and watches over Her.

pretty good video for a non-Vietnamese, but you still have a few mistakes. Let me point out: - The Sa Huynh Culture's center was in Central Vietnam. You put it name too far to the south, where lied the area of Dong Nai Culture - Nanyue/Nam Việt Kingdom wasn't formed by Yue tribes. Qin Dynasty conquered the region of modern day Guangdong in 214 BC. Then when Qin collapsed, a Chinese magistrate named Zhao Tuo/Triệu Đà built his own kingdom there, eventually invaded and annexed the region of northern Vietnam - using the modern conical hats for the Trưng Sisters is just wrong - your map for the Chinese domination period is exaggerated. Chinese territory only extended to about 17th parallel, not all the way into Central Vietnam - The Trinh and Nguyen did imported guns and cannons from Europeans, but that didn't mean Vietnam had no firearms before then. Firearms already existed in Vietnam from late 14th century (king Po Binasuor of Champa was killed by gunshots in his 1390 invasion of northern Vietnam) - North Vietnam didn't invade Cambodia in 1970. Before 1970, the Cambodian government played both sides, received financial aid from communist and capitalist states, so Cambodia ignored North Vietnam using their territory as transport route. Then US organized a coup d'etat to overthrow King Sihanouk, and with the agreement of the new government, launched campaigns against the already existing North Vietnamese bases in Cambodia. Also, you forgot about Vietnamese wars with Cambodia and China after 1975.
