Check out "Rashomon", Kurasawa's film from the 50s (?) Same plot. A woman is raped and we get 4 versions... hers, hubby's, rapist's, and a witness I believe. The witness's recollection of the fight scene is hilarious.

Surprised yet glad to see you review this movie! Saw this with my friends and we all loved every second. From the historical accuracy, the gritiness, to the gripping shift of perspectives through the narrative, I was sitting on the edge of my seat. I hope this movie gets more attention, its sad that the "controversy" caused people to look down on it because of it's subject matter. An amazing journey from start to finish.

Jered, I broke a rule of mine that I would wait to watch your review until I'd seen the movie. I had heard about the rape scenes and felt it was something I could do without, but weighing that with the historical accuracy was a struggle. Two things you said convenced me that I need to watch this movie. First, that when we watch a historical film it should cause us to examine our own culture and views, and second, that there should be no penalty for speaking the truth. Thanks for this video. As always, I'm impressed.

I saw it in theater, and I still caution you: the rape scenes are very difficult to sit through. I couldn’t stand it myself and tried to close my eyes, except that just hearing it made it feel somehow more intimate and even worse. No shame in pressing stop if you need it.

I think some reviewers like Lenore criticising the two scene misunderstand.. It wasn’t gratuitous the whole point of showing the assault twice was that EVEN from le gris perspective the incident was still a violent assault by our current understanding.

i get the feeling this film will be remembered better than it was reviewed; sorta like an earlier ridley scott film - bladerunner, which i consider the best film ever made. it was sorta hard for me to process because it was such an intensely personal story unlike his previous historical epics which were about world shaking events. but with the clarity of time and space i can say that the importance and timeliness of the subject matter cannot be overstated - it's literally changing our world before our eyes. when the dust settles i think it will be remembered as a part of the movement that made the world a better place, and a fantastic film in its own right.

So contrary to many films of this time period, civilians (called serfs) were rarely killed, especially in this time period because they were so valuable. They were slaves by another name. The lord with the most serfs, was the most powerful. Even enemy soldiers were taken captive if possible, because they were even more valuable. Nobles were captured and ransomed. There were battles and raids that were the exception to this, but generally killing was kept to a limit. The big exception were when the crown itself was up for grabs, battles between vassals were usually an opportunity to grab serfs and bring them back to your land. Its interesting that even today Putin is doing the same thing. Not sure if it quite works the same in the modern world, but it's an ancient strategy; Cao Cao of the Three Kingdoms of China period was a master at it.

Thanks guys, really great reaction to a film by one of my favourite directors. The Hundred Years War (1337-1453) was a series of wars best summed up by comedian and Oxford History graduate Al Murray, as a war we were enjoying so much that we spun it out for as long as possible! It's useful to practice against the French in case we need to fight a real war against someone a bit more difficult, like the Germans. For historical context, the story of Joan of Arc (1412-1431) fits into the later period of those wars as the French recovered more territories occupied by England, and Luc Besson's film The Messenger: The Story Of Joan Of Arc (1999) is one of my favourite directors and films as well. Jared's worst pronunciation was, of course, "British", when it should have sounded more like "English". The Act of Union was 1707, and during these conflicts Scotland was often allied to France - and often still is, it seems! The film shows Charles VI as being on the throne and making decisions. That may be a bit of simplification for the sake of the audience because the reality was more complex. Charles was only 18 in 1386 and France was actually ruled by a regency of his uncles, the Dukes of Burgundy, Anjou, Berry, and Bourbon. Charles would emancipate himself two years later at the age of 20, and he was known initially as Charles the Beloved, but later (as Jared alluded) Charles the Mad ('mad' in the English sense of mentally ill). Just a note about Jodie Comer, who plays Marguerite, I don't know how well known she might be in the US, but in her native England (born in Liverpool) and the UK, she is very well known for her breakout role as sociopathic assassin Villenelle in the BBC TV drama Killing Eve. The production stars Canadian-American actress Sandra Oh as Eve, best known for Grey's Anatomy, and Danish actor Kim Bodnia as Villenelle's Russian handler, best known for the original Danish-Swedish co-production of Bron/Broen (The Bridge). In defence of subtitles, many people in the UK enjoy foreign language productions like The Bridge, The Killing, and Borgen, which to put into perspective, are Danish productions breaking into a foreign market in the UK that is 13 times the size of it's domestic market in Denmark, in a foreign language, while The Beatles or Downton Abbey's conquest of the USA is breaking into a market only 5 times the size of its domestic market in the UK, and in the same language. I cannot think of anything so sad as seeing these European productions from Denmark, Sweden and other countries, finding their way into the American market only through licensing agreements to remake the shows in Hollywood. My favourite, The Bridge, was remade in America on the US/Mexican border at El Paso and Juárez, and by all accounts (I have not seen it myself) is an inferior production to the original, and all because American audiences are deemed to be incapable of watching, reading, and munching popcorn all at the same time. I don't know if that's a fair characterisation of our American cousins, but Jared seems to agree with it!

Jared I think you should watch an HBO documentary from 1987. It's called "Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam". It has actual Vietnam footage and the letters from US military personnel while in Vietnam. My Father served in Vietnam from October '65 to October '66. My Great-uncle Major William Earl McDonald USAF was KIA In November 17, 1967. William Earl was just eight years older than my Father. My Great-uncle Leonard McDonald was KIA December 9, 1944 and was the oldest of two sons and four daughters. William Earl volunteered to go to Vietnam and didn't have to go. The loss of these two sons is still felt today in our family. You can find a copy here on KZfaq but there is some nudity and real violence, so beware.

@@diggles2142 - Wales is technically a principality of England, annexed and united to the English Crown since 1216, hence the Prince of Wales is by convention the first son of the reigning monarch and heir to the English throne. So the Hundred Years War was between the Kingdoms of England and France. The Act of Union in 1707 united Scotland and England under James VI of Scotland (who became James I of England), and this created the United Kingdom of Great Britain. These unions of the various kingdoms, England, Scotland, and later Ireland, are represented in the Union Flag with three crosses, and the reason Wales is not represented because it is a principality of England and not a kingdom in its own right. Best KZfaq video explaining all of this, and more, is by CCP Grey: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qLSla7t1p7nSYWQ.html Recommend you play at 0.75 speed, because he talks very quickly!

Ridley Scott's Robin Hood
@davemac1197
@davemac1197 2 жыл бұрын
Much as I love Ridley Scott's work, I don't think that was his finest two hours. There was a theory that Ridley's career was on a downturn as his brother Tony's was on the ups, until Tony Scott's death in 2012. Ridley seems to have been having a revival since then. There have been many versions of the Robin Hood story but as an English person that's been around long enough to remember it, the most highly regarded version is still the HTV television production Robin Of Sherwood (1984-86), launching the careers of Michael Praed and then Jason Connery (son of Sean Connery) as Robin, and British character actors Ray Winstone (Will Scarlet), and Clive Mantle (Little John). It also featured Jeremy Bulloch (as Edward of Wickham) who played the original Boba Fett in The Empire Strikes Back, and Mark Ryan (as Nasir) who disappeared from TV until recently in the excellent Black Sails (2014-17) - a sort of Pirates Of The Caribbean for adults, as Quartermaster Mr Gates. I thoroughly recommend Robin Of Sherwood and Black Sails box sets if there's another pandemic, or even if there isn't.

Honestly, this movie bored me to tears. You get the same story 3 times before you finally get to dual, which was awesome. The first two are about as different as coke and pepsi in a blind taste test and the third was made up out of "whole cloth." Those are Ben Aflack's words, not mine. As such, I think it's pretty unfair to judge Carrouge based the opion the writers wished his wife had of him. Her account of the rape is fair game as it was taken directly from her testimony at the trial, but we have no idea what their relationship was actually like. The idea that he treated her like livestock is a complete fabrication based on nothing. It didn't need to be like this. They could have shown diffences in interpretation between characters in one telling of the story. And if you want to promote feminist talking points, you've got plenty to work with in 14th century France without steamrolling a man's grave with propaganda. This seems like a huge missed opportunity to tell a compelling and true story. Disappointing.

Ah so there ya go. I was wondering where the spiteful arrogance came from until I reached the third paragraph. Just another Trumper MAGA anti woke intolerant misogynist who can't stand it when a woman is put in a positive light, based on historical evidence no less, while the man is rightfully looked down on, based on fact. You do realize that Marguerite de Carrouges lived for another 30 some years and died in 1419 and gave factual accounts of what happened and how Jean de Carrouges really treated her right? Oh I forgot, you guys love to denounce and crucify historical fact when it doesn't fit your narratives. Carrouges was known and remembered as a "rash and temperamental man" whp had no problem physically and emotionally abusing his wife and gaslighting her whenever he wanted.
@obxwave
@obxwave 5 ай бұрын
Well said…I read the book this movie was based on, as well as other sources, and to the extent we have ANY evidence re the Carrouges’ marriage, it was a good one (at least by the standards of the time). They could have made an excellent film by sticking to the historical record, rather than fabricating a “me too” storyline for Marguerite, blackguarding her husband in the process.

@@mmartinu327 I think I understand why they did it…I just don’t approve of it. And don’t overlook the film-makers’ desire to send a modern Feminist message with the film…that was the obvious motivation. As to what the sources say, there is very limited information in the record…Jager does mention some evidence of mutual affection in his book, but it’s nothing definitive. The bottom line is, we don’t know and most probably will never know how Jean and Marguerite felt about one another, so the filmmakers felt they could make up whatever story they wanted. And clearly they were happy to besmirch the memory of Jean de Carrouges. The historical record indicates that he was brave, ambitious, impulsive, and at time querulous, but the brute depicted in act three of the film is Ridley Scott and Ben Afleck’s invention.
@mmartinu327
@mmartinu327 5 ай бұрын
@@obxwave I find that the movie plays cleverly with history (maybe the first time in a movie from Ridley Scott). It is entirely possible that this was the more accurate portrayal of events. Her husband could be more fond of her (because he himself chose her) than she of him. The motivation behind this decision you see strongly probably because of the director, who does this kind of thing very often (Kingdom of Heaven 2005 - USA ivasion of Irak 2003; The Last Duel 2021 - #MeToo 2017). But narratively it makes sense that she stand alone against the world and should her champion (who she didnt choose) lose, she will be burned alive. The final act is excellent. And that her husband is depicted in her POV in less than stellar light, works quite well in that.

I like historical, time period movie's. This movie looked great but the plot is political manipulation, to put current groups at odds with each other for current year votes. Their goal is to paint men as evil, for their political benefit, and at the determent to the underclass's relationships and family structure. They do the same with race. Elitists are just absolutely destroying families and the dynamic between men and women, for power. It's sick, and that's all I could take away from this movie after watching it.
