Get to know the life of Mexican nun, poet and scholar, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, who was censored by the Church for her critical writings.
--
Juana Ramírez de Asbaje sat before a panel of prestigious theologians, jurists, and mathematicians. They had been invited to test Juana’s knowledge with the most difficult questions they could muster. But she successfully answered every challenge, from complicated equations to philosophical queries. Who was this impressive woman? Theresa Yugar details the life of the Mexican poet and scholar.

As a fact, in Mexico City, there’s a university with her name, “Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana” (Sor Juana’s Cloister University). This institution is one of the best to study Art History and Gastronomy in all Mexico. This complex was a cloister, inaugurated in 1623, in here, Sor Juana stayed most of her life writing and learning, alongside other nuns. It was in 1971, when it was declared a national patrimony and eight years later it became a university, which is still in function. This was a short version behind the history of this historical building, hope you liked it. Have a nice life. ♥️

And that's important. If everyone already knew that the Earth orbited the Sun and not the other way around, then Galileo would have just been another random person in history. The same case with all the scholars, artists, and other historical figures who gained their fame because of their conflict with society. This is because the reason that these people make these achievements in the first place is because they want to correct the wrongs of their society. Without the wrongs, there would be no one to create the rights.

Dario Castaneda, the problem here is not about teaching or not Sor Juana's work (because they do teach it in a large scale in Mexico), it is about teaching values and how to find and incorporate in our lives the actual lessons that history leaves us. As someone who was raised in the Mexican educational system, I can tell that it is not designed for creating this kind of principles at all. Mexico has a misogynist and violent culture which causes go way beyond a failed education system; even if the education programes improved, teachers and guidance from the family play a major role in what children learn. Thus, a history class with essential lessons like gender equality is not enough to orient an entire generation towards a better and fairer world.

Juana de Asbaje wanted academic education. She was an intellectual. She knew she was capable of geniality, just as men. But in her times women did not have the right for education and, the only way for her get it would be if she became a nun. Knowing the fierceful passion she had for defending women rights, I don’t think she would’ve have supported Catholicismeither

Nope, you’ve got it exactly backwards. It was an act of humility, of her killing her pride, not reinforcing it as you imagine. “Obedience. The most thrilling word in the world; a very thunderclap of a word. Why do all these fools fancy that the soul is only free when it disagrees with the common command? Why should mere disagreement make us feel free? I know you are fond of dancing; do you want to dance to a different tune from your partner’s? You are a fine horsewoman; do you want to think of walking northward all by yourself, when you and your horse are going southward together? You have called me a nun; I am not a nun, I am not good enough to be a nun. I do not . . . I have not set . . . (She breaks off the sentence.) But do you suppose that nuns are unhappy? I never see them pass, silent and hooded, through their quiet cloisters but I have a vision: a vast vision of Amazons, wilder than any heathen Valkyries, riders rushing into battle; a charge of chivalry going all one way, and every rider as free as Joan of Arc; galloping, galloping to God. That is the real vision of Obedience.” The princess’ maid, From “The Surprise” by G.K. Chesterton.

Real Communism the main reason why women usually didn’t get Nobel peace prizes was because they normally couldn’t do anything to get one. They were often forced to stay at home to take care of children, or be nurses or nuns. Only lucky few were able to go to college to get a higher education. Plus, a lot of women did make amazing discoveries that could have been Nobel peace prize awarded. But, their work was often taken and men would claim it as their own. All humans are intelligent, gender has nothing to do with it. Opportunity and oppression is what stops people from proving their intellect

Thank you for this video. I particularly loved the style of the animation and the subject BUT ! I must say that there is a mistake in it. You said that the fact that she sold her books and stopped writing was attributed to a constraint coming from the clergy, but it was recently recognized that Sor Juana found in this retreat a kind of compromise allowing her to continue studying away from the multiple solicitations caused by his celebrity.

I haven't kept up with Disney the last several decades but are they even doing princess movies without a love interest? A heroine as serious as Juana would be pretty hard to trivialize. I don't think Disney would be interested.

She called herself the worst nun, not because she actually believed it, but because her beliefs and behaviour were going against society’s beliefs during that time, so in their eyes, she may have been the worst nun. Which is a good thing, kind of, because it shows that she refused to conform

There is more of Sor Juana's work and life, than the portraited here. She was so ironical in many texts, mocking of the lacking of intellect of the "most representative philosophers and poets" of her days. She criticized all men philosophical and poetry traditions, and challenged their doble moral. There is a writting, Respuesta a Sor Filotea, where she basically meanted this "ups ...excuse respectable Sirs, I took you for a well learned men, but your lacking make me unable to debate properly". It was a shame that the only way she could deliver her mastery were under the oppresive wing of church. And It is a Shame that no many people understands the true and deep value of her figure, not even in here, México.
