Let’s be honest. The strengths test they mostly do are irrelevant. For example, on a battlefield you aren’t chopping pots or hitting a block of ice with your sword multiple times, they should do it on shields or other swords to mimic dmg the weapon could take in combat.

@LilGlitchBoi bro when it comes to weapons, there is only so many takes a nation and culture can come up with. "Ah. Curved thing that cuts" "A hard thing that smashes" "A long thing that pokes" "A straight wedge that can chop" "And some long and short versions of each" And then some form of gun, which may or may not have a modern rendition chambered for some type of 6.5mm projectile. That seems to be the one thing humans throughout history can shake on. It's like a checklist. "One of our guns was chambered in 6.5mm. check." Everyone does it.

To be fair, the 19-year-old had more modern and better equipment than the other guy, no doubt he's skilled but also much easier for him to create his blade. Props to the older guy, he basically created the weapon inside a shack, while the other kid had an entire workshop to play with.
@andythierry5402
@andythierry5402 4 жыл бұрын
Nonetheless the 19-year-old being aware of his advantages, took more risks in the conception of his blade and put more attention to detail. It is not as if he made an equally hard sword with better equipment, what he made is considerably harder to make without encountering failures in the process.

I guess the only way to fix that is have them make it at the studio cause then you wouldn’t have people whining that the other person has better tools and it’s not fair. Look at the old antique weapons they didn’t have crazy elaborate tools and they made beautiful works of art that functioned from nothing. It’s all about skill.

As in most things, it's a balancing act. You want a weapon heavy enough to be structurally sound and capable of inflicting injuries on your target, but still light enough to be wielded for extended periods without exhausting or breaking the user. @@DC-ru5xz well if it's made with proper tempering and good craftsmanship then it doesn't need a thick blade. Thinner blades have actually been proven to be better at cutting flesh and thinner blades have also been proven to be better at piercing armor, as it focuses all the force into one small spot rather than the wider area caused by a thicker blade. Lighter blades are also faster and can be concealed better. There's a reason the judges dont pick heavy blades, it only shows poor craftsmanship.

Well the whole point of Forged in Fire is to see who can make the most durable blade. And since Damascus Steel is a bit harder to work with due to the many problems it may have, only the best of bladesmiths can make a good Damascus sword. Sure, it may be useless in a real sword fight but in competitions like these then impressing the judges are everything. If two people make exactly the same blade except one uses Damascus and they both fare exactly the same in the tests, judges are more likely to pick the Damascus blade as it is much harder to work with than using just one steel type. So that's why people use it, because if it works well then it will be more likely to win.

I'm glad the show is finally punishing overly heavy weapons that are too heavy to be practically used on real battlefields. Smiths in previous episodes could make impractically heavy blades that basically "cheat" through strength tests. The much lighter blade with the better grip survived the pot test without damage and was still razor sharp, which is why it won. If you look at large historical weapons, even dane axes weighed only 4-5 pounds and very long swords like Zweihänders weighed ~5 pounds (even heavy ceremonial ones were no more than 10 pounds). Single handed swords typically weighed 1-2 pounds while most two handed swords weighed 3-4 pounds.

Its not really cheating. If you were making a blade and knew that Jay Nielsen was gonna bash it against a brick wall 10 times you'd make a heavy blade as well
@Intranetusa
@Intranetusa 4 жыл бұрын
@@hakobbasilfan4644 It's technically not cheating, but it's exploiting the lack of standards/consistency in the show's rules to beat the strength tests by making something that doesn't resemble the historical weapon because it is much too heavy and impractical for the battlefield.

@@Intranetusa I thought they have parameters / limitations on length, weight etc. So if it still is in range of those parameters, then I don't see any issue. If the judges think weapons are often too heavy, then they need more strict regulations / limits on the accepted weight, very simple.

Warping is not the same as snapping. In fact, it might be opposite problems. Warping/bending means the blade is a bit soft and malleable, while snapping means it is too hard, not malleable enough, and too brittle.
