The Socialist Republic of Chile was a short-lived state that existed for some months in 1932. A product of the Great Depression it was established when Carlos Dávila and Eugenio Matte launched a succesful coup ousting Juan Esteban Montero. Later Dávila held talks with former president Carlos Ibáñez del Campo. His rule ended after 100 days and later Arturo Alessandri was elected as president of Chile.

@davidraper5798 I've lived all my 59 years in Sydney, Australia. And even I've read about it. I suppose if the subject area interests a person, they'll go digging around and read "obscure books" and histories. I suppose if you read enough of them, in the end, you're bound to come across titles that deal with Marxist-Leftist-Socialist Movements of Latin and South America. It is an extraordinarily interesting and violent era of extreme violence, extreme decadence, and huge gulfs between the haves and the have-nots. While there are similarities between Chile and other nations, they can only be called "superficial" at best.

Thanks, that was excellent. I know very little about Chilean and Latin American history in general, so I'm really enjoying your postings from there. I believe the Industrial Workers of the World (the American based syndicalist union) had branches in Chile in the 1930's and were smashed rather brutally by a military coup at some juncture in the 1930's. I'm uncertain whether the oppression occurred in 1932 in the aftermath of the "Socialist Republic" or not. The history of class struggle in Latin America has been a violent one reflecting the relative instability of democratic institutions and the existence of powerful oligarchies. It is good to see that things have settled down these past 20 years or so.

Hello. Sorry if I am off topic but I think there is in interesting story that occured in WW2 Dutch East Indies(or prior). When Dutch fell to the hands of Germany in WW2 many Germans(even those against the nzis and jews) were interned by the KNIL. Also an interesting incident happened. Van Imhoff a ship carrying German prisoners to India was sunk by Japanese and many said the KNIL and the crew of the ship didnt help the German prisoners. Just asking if you want to dive into that story about Germans in the Dutch East Indies. Thanks for reading
