The Union Pacific Big Boy's are one of the most famous and legendary steam locomotives ever built. Large, powerful, and highly successful, eight found their way into preservation. Quite recently, one of them, 4014, was put back into operation by Union Pacific themselves. And it's awesome.

@jesseusgrantcanales To be precise, that's actually not right either. The last run revenue run by a Union Pacific steam locomotive was made on, you are correct, July 21st 1959, but was made by 4015. The 4000's were placed in dead storage in various places and by 1961 were being donated or scrapped. 4005 actually sat in storage in the Green River roundhouse until 1967 before being donated.

@@mcnielentertainment Generally speaking steam locos at that scale are capable of putting down more tractive effort than a similar sized diesel. The diesel has the steam trains on basically everything else. But it's still awesome watching a big old train just SHOVE a revenue train while on it's way to it's next tour stop.

I certainly don't think #4014 (or any of the other Big Boys) are overrated. I had the opportunity to see that magnificent engine (along with UP #844) in Utah about five years ago, and it was indeed an experience that couldn't be replicated with watching videos. I've also seen #4012 on display at Steamtown, though it's been a while since I last was there.

Great video but there is one thing I missed…the SOUND of the Big Boy’s whistle. It’s an unmistakable baritone that sounds like nothing else. It reminds me of a ghost moving through the hills. Also, the Big Boy doing that little push of the freight train a few years back probably counts as its first revenue work since the 1950s. And while yes it’s an antique, it wouldn’t be any different as taking a Dusenberg out of Jay Leon’s garage and pushing it to 100 MPH…because that’s what it was designed to do. The Big Boys were made to get freight up the grade.

Darkness, you *please* talk about Texas & Pacific 610 the next time you make a video about a steam locomotive? I know there are other notable steam giants worthy of their own videos, like 3985, 1218, 2156, and 643, but I feel like 610 doesn’t get enough love nowadays, and it has a very long history behind it. It was almost scrapped at some point in the 60’s, and it almost always got the short end of the stick in excursion service.

I think what one of the coolest things about them bringing the 4014 to the steam shop was the two engines they had in front and behind. The one in front was the current 4014 and behind it was 4884 which is the wheel arrangement.

Nearly as powerful as the Big Boy's, and capable of top speeds of over 70 mph. They were designed and built in-house by N&W's steam shops in Roanoke, VA. for heavy passenger and fast freight work through the Blue Ridge mountains. In service from 1937-60, there were 45 built, and the sole survivor of the class, Number 1218 ran excursions in the late 1980's and early 90's before being put on static display and the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke.

Write off steam at your peril! In the UK there is a project to convert an otherwise generally useless British Rail Class 60 to steam using Hydrogen or a compound thereof, e.g. ammonia, as fuel for the boiler - i.e. to operate as a turbo electric, retaining the original traction motors etc. In due course, to be carbon neutral, the 4014 may itself require conversion to burn hydrogen rather than oil.

I watched the Big Boy, 4014. Leave Cheyenne Wyoming, on June 30th, heading west. And it did not have a Diesel Engine . I just finished watching a video of the 4014, taken on July 11th, in the Feather River Canyon with bridges. And Low and Behold the Diesel Engine was back. Which means that said Diesel is either needed for Braking, or perhaps even giving the 4014 a Push. I watched the 4014 and 844, deadheading west to Utah, for the 150 Anniversary of the finishing of the Trans Con Railroad back in 2019. It is the first video on my channel. And even though there where two big steam engines, it still needed a Diesel, for what ever reason. Frankly I wondered if that would happen. Yes, from Utah to Cheyenne, over the Wahsache mountains, and Sherman hill. The highest point on the UP line. And that was all.

*looks around* Huh, no one flipping out about the Big Boys being referred to by the feminine pronouns. Nice change. So fun fact, Ed Dickens said in one of his talks that 4014 was his second choice. He originally wanted 4023, but he was told he couldn't have her, because it would be too difficult to get her down from her display site. He then settled on 4014, because he'd already earmarked her a few years before as a good restoration candidate. He also said that the story of UP looking at all the Big Boys was false. He knew what he wanted, and they didn't look at the others.

Most machines are referred to as she. The Big Boy is a unique example where both are acceptable it seams. Not gonna lie it feels weird to refer to it as a male. What does disney do with the Roger Brogie and Ernest S marsh? Id like to see their take. Probably still she.
@shimesu443

@@JonsGarage89 Oh yes, I know. I do the same, but I've seen far, FAR too many comments on here about people getting huffy about it. "It's a big BOY, not a big GIRL." Completely ignoring that Ed Dickens has referred to 4014 as "she" and "her" a few times. I've read posts and comments on various places from the engine crews, and they all use the feminine pronouns, even if the engine has a male name. So the Ernest S Marsh, and the Ward Kimball, and all the others are still ladies.

Love this video bringing back a 4000 class Big Boy locomotive my favorite 4014 roll on you know I think they rebuilt this monster to help out the diesel locomotives since there weak to pull anything these days that’s why they need helpers just saying. But I do have a feeling that they will put 4014 Big Boy back to freight service since it’s a freight train after all not a passenger train

just never forget the previous most powerful operating excursion steam locomotive, N&W 1218 from 1987 to 1991. 3985 was the most powerful operating excursion steam locomotive before the 1218 from 1981 to 1986 but after the 1218's excursion retirement the 3985 took it back in 1992 :D Hmm does that also include the 844 as the world's most powerful operating excursion steam locomotive before 3985 and after 3985? Until 611 had a short stint with it in the latter half of the 2010's decade.
