I was born in 1952 but I have been a fan '20's and '30's jazz and dance music since my early teens. The internet is now providing all generations with the chance of sampling this wonderful period of 'pop' music. The trick is to disregard the 'dross' of which there was a lot. Thanks for uploading these Harry Hudson tracks-I've never heard them in such volume and clarity.

I think age has nothing to do with it; it has to do with your appreciation of good music. You and I are on opposite ends of the spectrum - you're 16 and I'm 75 [born May 1937]. However, for both of us this music was before our time, and we love it. I hope that you continue to enjoy this music and that it will be around for your generation and many more. I may have only a few years more to appreciate this music but since my mother died at 97 perhaps I can make another 20 years.

Don't worry about it! I started listening to trad jazz when I was about 14 or 15, I found an old 78 of Louis Armstrong playing 'Basin Street Blues' (which I later broke - such is the fate of most 78s!). Most of my school friends thought I was weird but a few of them got interested in jazz as well. You are so lucky now that you have KZfaq to give you an endless supply of free oldies!

To prove my love of these little Radio discs, I've even been making my own white card sleeves for them! The original paper covers are usually either missing or torn to bits. I've had a few failures, but seem to have worked out a way to cut the middle circle, which involves a surgeon's scalpel! These little treasures deserve good covers.

Thanks for doing such a good remastering job. Harry Hudson's studio group had a wonderful big,almost symphonic, sound on these 8" discs. I think his version of "You brought a new kind...." is brilliant in its simple use of solo instruments,then building to orchestral crescendo.

I keep being amazed with both the musical and sound quality of those little Radio discs. Especially when you realise that they cost a fifth of the price of a comparable Plum label HMV. The surface noise is much lower and the frequency range is better than most 1960s discs.

We all have our preferences of course. I love Harry Hudson's sound, and Alfredo too, yet still lap up Orlando's Orchestra from the late 30s, which is worlds apart. Ambrose mostly leaves me cold for some reason, expect from a few early Deccas and HMVs about 1930 when the band had their own fabulous rhythm. I would happily leave most Hyltons, Stones and Foxs in the pile at a jumble sale, Bowlly or not. A Munro on a Red Parlophone would be a delight! I suppose we all have to agree to differ. :-)

That's the best 16'53" I've spent in ages. The transcriptions are beautifully done and a lot of work and research went into the visuals. To me Harry Hudson was the man at the piano in "Have A Go" on the BBC Light Programme in the early 1950s and all his recordings are a recent discovery. This was a joy to audition.

There is an article about John Thorne in the latest edition of Memory Lane magazine, which you can find on an internet search. I've had these records since I was a teenager. My father bought a lot of these EBRs which were ex shop stock from Glasgow. I have many, many more of these which I hope to upload over time. Glad you enjoyed the recordings.

In a used bookstore here in the Washington, DC, area, I happened to find an 8-inch 78 issued under the Eclipse label (owned by Woolworth UK, I've heard) ... a recording from 1932 of a singer listed as "the Pavement Singer." I've found something online saying that the Pavement Singer, who recorded several sides for Eclipse in 1932 and 1933, was John Thorne, recording under a pseudonym. I'd never heard of him. Can you point me to other info about him?

yes,there was more dross in the 40s. But there were a lot of 20s and 30s records that have not stood the test of time-and every junk shop pile used to be full of them; I think the problem with the 40s was that dance band arrangements in England became a bit formulaic,compared to the quality and variety around 1930.

It's unusual in a good way. Maybe a little less unusual if you're European than if you're American. We Americans tend to let fashion and progress shape our tastes.

Music used to have a purpose, a purpose to really make someone happy, or cheer someone up. Now all music is about is about rape, murder, sex, and drugs. I miss the days when music wasn't made for people to just say random shit.

The 'dross' came in the 40's IMO. It's difficult to find a 30's record not worth listening to. pax41 uploads lots of great 20's-30's music. I use randomtube to play tracks at random of any playlist, even made a 'night time headphone zzz...' playlist that I play every night. Sometimes I'll add playlists from other users. Just google ransomtube

There were two principle reasons for the change of British Dance Bands in the 1940s. The first was that many top musicians were drafted into the forces thus causing enormous headaches for the bandleaders who suddenly found themselves trying to find musicians to fill in at short notice. Secondly, perhaps as a result of lack of arrangers, there was a tendency to copy the Glenn Millers and other American bands. British bands generally lost much of their individualty - with some exceptions.
@Panachord
@Panachord 11 жыл бұрын
I cannot agree with you. Ronnie Munro's recordings of the late 1930s are first rate. Just because you prefer a particular period doesn't give you cause to denigrate musicians and a musical approach of later years.
@pauljones7437

I cannot understand why young people are not listening to this music.in my opinion british dance bands lost the plot in 1937 with the advent of sickly arrangements of the likes of ronnie munro.the last gasp of the old style british dance band can be seen in the 1937 film'calling all stars' where evelyn dall can be seen with ambroses orchestra singing 'I'm all in'.even ambrose with anne shelton was unlistenable by the 1940s

@christopherwibberley8984 Жыл бұрын
Well you must have read my mind because that is exactly my opinion.The “calling all stars”film I have on 9.5mm and I agree it is the end of the era of the dance bands.My favourite year of the 1930s for music is 1931 which had some great hits. Despite the praise of another comment I find the Ronnie Munro sides of the late 1930s unlistenable even those with al Bowlly
