Missing that open D string in the main riff. That's the key to making that thing sound right, the dissonance created by the open D and the slightly bent (upwards) fretted D on the A string.

Yes, but that album tone (not only that song) is never heard again on any other album by anyone. Or reproduced in youtube vids. Raw, woody, grainy, fuzzy. One of the holy grail albums when I was very very young. Lemon song uses a lot of open strings too, but is again that raw almost lofi tone that really grabs me.

Very enjoyable, thank you. How about Deep Purple's 'Bloodsucker' from the 'In Rock' album? And no, Ritchie Blackmore's not using what you'd expect , so no Strat and possibly not strictly a Marshall (research isn't completely clear about when he changed or modified amps). Great song.

@ronnienose8608 4 жыл бұрын
@@ThomannsGuitarsBasses Guillaume, here's the link to 'Bloodsucker:'kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gKligq6jzrOyqXU.html He used a 335 and it might have been through his Vox AC30 because he did use that amp on the 'In Rock' sessions. The story goes that he slaved the AC30 into a Marshall 100 watt head. Marshall tried to replicate the sound of his Vox but struggled, so they put all the Vox electrics into one of their heads for him. As Deep Purple's popularity took off Blackmore needed more volume so had them make a 200 watt Major head, which supposedly upset everyone at the factory when he came in to try it out at full volume! Also, have a listen to this song called 'I'm Alone,' just a throwaway song of Purple's that was just a 'b'-side on one of their singles. But Ritchie's solo and the outro show some great alternate picking, revealing some great chops on his Strat' with not much overdrive. It's worth listening to, here's the link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m7Vjgph4rNeZZoE.html

The song was actually recorded with his Les Paul Standard Sunburst which was a '57 or '59, don't remember. But the amps he used at the time (1969) were Vox amps; the same ones the Beatles were using at the time. He called them Beatles Super Amp cuz the Beatles asked Vox to build them more powerful amps so they could hear themselves over all the screaming (true story). So it was recorded with a Les Paul Standard through Vox Super Beatles Amps into Rickenbacker 4x12 cabinets. I believe he also used something like an old Tone Bender Fuzz. That's just FYI. You actually have that iconic sound down pretty good. Probably closer than most anyone else.

Pickupwise.... For reference the '59 is 8.2K concerning output. If you're looking for a humbucker with an output like that, others for example... From Seymour Duncan: Pearly Gates, Alnico II Pro, Antiquity, Zephyr, Whole Lotta Humbucker (...), Seth Lover ('55 PAF) & Slash. From Dimarzio: PAF Master, EJ Custom, PAF Joe, Air Classic, Dark Matter & Mo'Joe. And many of those you can get for Stratocaster. Don't ask me which exactly.... Pearly Gates, Alnico II Pro & '59 for sure, that I can tell you.

I am amazed how few "how to sound" vids go for a TELE and Tone Bender to catch the early Led Zep tone. I mean, that was an era where people stumbled on stage because of the fuzz boxes around.

Kevin van den Berg - I heard the same thing, but I also heard that he didn’t actually start using it until most of the second album was already recorded in the studio, so if he used the GLP on the tour for LZ II, that doesn’t mean that he didn’t use the Tele on the studio album.
