The day had come to leave Siberia and make my way into Mongolia through its western border in the Bayan-Olgii province. The weather was clear and, as with any day of hitchhiking, I was curious to see how long it would take to reach my destination. I knew I wanted to stop in Kosh-Agach before making a run for the border as it was the largest town around and I was curious to see what it was like. I had a delicious lunch at a restaurant in the center of town where one of the workers even spoke English. After lunch it was back to the Chuysky Trakt and onward to the border. The first car that stopped was only going home but was nice enough to load my pack in his trunk and drop me off at the turnoff to his home. Shortly after, a half empty van that only passes through the area once a week on a public transport route from Astana, Kazakhstan to Olgii, Mongolia scooped me up and I was on my way. The roads deteriorated after the Russian checkpost, and things got a bit more remote once we crossed into Mongolia. Shortly after it got dark, the city lights of Olgii came into view. My driver dropped me off at my hostel and he and the rest of the passengers wished me safe travels. It was my first time hitchhiking across an international border, and a very successful journey indeed. All in a day's work, as they say.
