Sam Raimi went through a lot when making Spider-Man 3. This is the finale, the almost perfect finale to the HiTop Films Spider-Man Series.The last HiTop Films Spider-Man Video. If you haven’t watched Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man - The Perfect Origin (Part 1) or Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 - The Perfect Superhero Movie (Part 2), I recommend watching those before you watch Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 - The Almost Perfect Finale (Part 3). The Raimi Trilogy made me the (boy) man I am today. Thank you Sam Raimi, thank you to everyone involved with making the trilogy, and thank YOU for watching.
Much love.

Raimi was given a script and was forced to use Green Goblin in one and Doc Ock in two. He was then forced to do Venom in three because we fans do love Venom. It is Raimi's fault he made him suck and cast him wrong. Getting mad at Avi for telling Raimi to use Venom is like getting made at a pizza store owner for telling his chief to buy plenty of pepperoni for the store because people love pepperoni. And when the manager orders crappy pepperoni and barely puts any on the pizza, you'd have us blame the owner for making the chief use those ingredients. Good for Avi who stuck up for the fans and wanted to bring us Venom, shame on Raimi for miscasting him, writing him poorly, barely giving him screen time, and making him suck. You people want to give Raimi a pass and it's bullshit.

The man that Peter is, the man that is Spiderman, exists due to the fault of one man. Peter bases his entire life around pursuing a Manhattan where no other person loses their own "Uncle Ben." And after great personal struggle and grief, he is able to look at the man that pulled his perception of the world apart, and forgive him. Yeah, it's pretty powerful.

Despite Spider-Man 3 being a mess of a movie and a drop in quality from the first two, I feel really bad for Raimi and others that worked on it. Studio interference can really screw with a film. All-in-all, I still enjoy Spider-Man 3 because it is hilarious and still carries the fun campiness of the first two.
@Padverus
@Padverus 3 жыл бұрын
I could never hate Sam, it really wasn’t his fault Spider-Man 3 turned out the way it did. The studio and producers just had a different vision then him and I’d imagine as a creator that must just drain any bit of ambition or motivation to make a great film. It’s not like he didn’t make the first 2 films which are amazing. Some people are really just petty.
@Padverus
@Padverus 3 жыл бұрын
@UCJKPf9GynWwZU0rdz3Di2TA I mean that’s kind of why I respect him, it didn’t matter how much money Sony threw at him he wasn’t gonna make the movie they wanted. How could he be expected to put full effort into a movie that was completely different then the movie he’s been envisioning since Spider-Man 2? I don’t disagree that he didn’t put his full effort into the film but there was a very clear reason behind why he did that and I can’t blame him for feeling discouraged and defeated during the making of the film. It’s just easy to see the quality difference between the first 2 films and the 3rd because Sam genuinely wanted to make those films but with 3 his heart just wasn’t in it and that reflects in the final product.

Also, I find the “damn door!” an underrated bit of symbolism. When we are introduced to the Door, MJ is struggling to get through. She mentions that it keeps getting in her way, making it difficult for her to reach Peter. See where I’m going with this? The Door symbolizes the way Peter is keeping himself, his true self, from others. People - Mary Jane, Aunt May, even Ursula - have to work to get into his room, to get to *Peter.* When Peter is under the influence of the Symbiote, consumed by his ego and convinced he is right above all others, he yells at the landlord: “You’ll get your rent when you fix this *damn door!”* He is convinced that the barrier between himself and others is not his responsibility to fix, that others owe it to him to fix it for him (I know that it’s the landlord’s job to fix stuff on the property they rent out, but I’m looking at this from a purely symbolic perspective, not a literal one). When MJ wants to talk to Peter after it is revealed that his uncle’s killer is still at large, she goes to his room, working her way past the Door. When Aunt May is worried about him and gives him the talk about forgiving himself, she again goes to his room, pushing through the Door. However, at the end of the movie, once Peter has reopened himself to others, he reaches out to Mary Jane, leaving his room, going past the Door to see Mary Jane, taking it upon himself to reach her.

It was something I never thought about as a kid of course, but when I got older and went through my own trials with addiction, it really connected with me all these years later. I think if they had just saved Venom to be the main villain for 4, the film could have been perfect. Peter could have discovered the symbiote in 3, used it against Sandman to get revenge, and then used it against Harry--scarring his face like he did in the actual film. However, upon seeing his friend permanently disfigured due to his actions, he realizes that the suit has blinded him with rage, just as Harry was blinded with rage by the death of his father. Peter would then get rid of the suit, and have one more fight with Harry, before helping Harry realize the truth: regardless of what they have put each other through, they are still best friends, and vengeance is not the way to solve their problems in life. By that point, they could bring Sandman down together, or maybe Harry sacrifices himself in some way, or maybe (still hearing the Goblin in his head), Harry decides to enter a psychiatric hospital to heal his mind so he'll no longer be a danger to Peter or anyone else. The film could then show the symbiote attaching itself to Eddie's clothing, while Peter and MJ dance and decide to mend their relationship, like in the actual film.

Spider-Man 3 is definitely one of those movies I have see-sawed on over the years, but there is a beating heart at its core that brings me back to it again and again. I love the story that Sam and Ivan Raimi and Alvin Sargent decided to tell and think it still shines through in the final product in spite of the film's messy screenplay. Ego, humility and forgiveness - these are classic Spider-Man themes and make for a satisfying conclusion to an overall amazing trilogy and some of my favourite movies ever.

Great video again. I want to add to your analysis of the church scene too, and the impact of the meaning of Peter saying "You want forgiveness? Get religion." After the Jazz club scene, and after Peter realizes what he's become, he's broken, and wants to repent for what he's done as well. He doesn't just go to a bell tower to get rid of the symbiote. He goes to church to repent. The same church Eddie is at, and we see a contrast here in what the core difference between Eddie and Peter is. They both go to church, but for different reasons. EDIT: Just finished watching the video. Thank you for making this series. You really helped me rediscover why I love Spider-Man so much in a time when I wasn't really sure about myself.

"Kirsten Dunst agreed to do the third film with the condition that Mary Jane did not serve as a damsel in distress in the third act. This was agreed upon by executives and Sam Raimi; originally the climax involved Eddie Brock kidnapping Gwen Stacy and holding her hostage, as he was sure that Peter was in love with Gwen. Mary Jane still played a big part in the climax with her most notable cut scene: Mary Jane went to Harry and made a passionate speech about forgiveness, prompting him to go and help Peter. This scene was filmed, and some of the dialogue can be heard in the trailers (”We’ve all done terrible things to each other, but we have to forgive each other. Or everything we ever were will mean nothing... On the DVD commentary, Sam Raimi commented further on changing the ending, saying that in order to finish the film on time, they had to rewrite things to put Mary Jane in danger. He admitted that telling Kirsten Dunst was one of the hardest things he’d done in a long time in the movie making business. Aside from this, many scenes were either written or filmed and cut from the finished product.." The production of the climax scenes of Mary Jane being in peril left Kirsten Dunst very depressed and exhausted and she soon entered rehab for depression when she wrapped the spider-man 3 promo tour.

25:45. I gasped. I forgot the shock of this scene, and I was teary eyed for a moment just reflecting on how grateful I am that I grew up with these movies, and the powerful themes of growth, empathy and humble simplicity that I couldn't quite understand at the time. What a beautiful story this was, watching Peter wound those he loved the most and then look into the mirror and face the ugly face that he saw in it, and then have the humility to forgive himself, and fight to make right his wrongs. After his dearest friend forgives him and gives his life for him, he gains the perspective and humility to look Sandman in the eyes and realize that he is no better than this man that he hated, and forgives him courageously. You've done a fantastic job analyzing this movie that I loved as a boy, and love even moreso as a man. Great work, and God bless you.

Its quite true and sad as well. Marvel really had the chance to make their definitive take on Spider-Man and they just butchered it, imo. The movies are fun but they never really feel like authentic Spider-Man films. The writers just completely misunderstood what Spider-Man is all about, they removed the essence, the spirit of the character. By making Peter's development so intrinsically attached to Iron Man, they stripped him of his agency and independence. His economic struggles have also been erased, in favour of fancy suits from Stark. Aunt May is just a male fantasy in these films and the most important supporting characters like Mary Jane Watson, Harry Osborn, Betty Brant etc have been completely changed or turned into comic relief.

Yeah well it’s hated because it’s a terrible movie! Not as bad as Justice League or Origins Wolverine or even The Amazing Spider-Man 2 but still terrible!
