After thinking about the smell in that hive 99, I got to thinking I should have looked close at the brood to look for signs of AFB or EFB. This could have been the cause of the smell if the brood is dying in the cells. From what I know abbout EFB, it usually shows up when it's very humid, when the spores can survive better, and is much more manageable than AFB. We haven't had a lot of rain recently, so it's not been that humid. AFB is bad news and is treatable, but usually comes back. There's different regulations state to state on AFB and the treatment of it. Burning the hive or hitting it with radiation is the best way to get rid of AFB. Also, I checked 2 more hives with those same hive tools, so that's something to be aware of as well. I'll get out there today and do a close inspection of that brood to see if I can detect any disease.

Foul odor is brood disease. Dead larvae smells bad. EFB is a spring disease when the colony is tasked with feeding lots of brood and nutrition is not abundant or diverse. It has nothing to do with humidity. Sugar syrup 1:1 is also useful to help with EFB. Bees perfer nectar to feed larvae vs the overwintered honey or syrup. They have to collect water to dilute the honey so they can use it. Honey mixed with water ferments quickly, bad. Syrup is something that is easy to provide, which also stimulates hygienic behavior, something that is needed to treat EFB.

I think you don't have to worry about AFB. It does stink like something dead but brood frames are not full sheets.. they have holes from bees trying to pull out the stinky liquid that used to be larva. If you look at the comb at an angle from the top down you should see dry remains of that dry larva on the bottom two sides (walls) of that cell

I can see why that queen would lay all the way to the one side, seeing as that was the end hive. It for sure would be warmer on the side that has another hive next to it. They're pretty smart! I hear you about the weather! I am on kid watch this week and I am dealing with a lot of mud! Makes the chores and caring for my expectant does more difficult. I have a plan for fixing the worst area, but it's pretty expensive, unless my friend can find a cheaper material source (he thinks he can).

Hey MWZ. good to hear from you. I try to put them on when the redbuds start to bloom, which is right now here. Things seem earlier than last year by about two weeks, which last year was early by about two weeks. lol I broke apart my super stacks Monday thinking I would put them on this weekend, but too cold. As soon as it warms up again, I'll get the excluders and supers on. Thanks so much for dropping in.

I’ve been curious if soaking the wood part of the frames in wood bleach (Oxalic acid) per the instructions if they would clean up the wood part of the frames. I’m not sure if any spores could be carried over on the wood part of the frames. Thanks for sharing! I hope 99 is okay.

@@JeromeBeeFarmNaa thank you for posting. I don't even look at them they all go into the pot frames and all, then onto a draining frame above the pot, I don't use plastic at all, so all my frames have wax foundation. I had a degree in polymer chem among other things and I don't like the thought of old plastics in the hives. The polymer breaks down releasing plasticizer into the wax. Wax is like a sponge and absorbs chemicals easily.

Hello Hello it good to see you have the rotation out of the way . There is another person I watch an he just had AFB problem in one yard of his he had to burn 10 out of 40 hives . What I understand in the radiation treatment it is very hi price to do that but never heard the amount for it . I do not think I would take that chance I think if I ever had to deal with that I would just go ahead an do the burning an then set an cry 😢. On my colonies I have never done any of the rotating because I run the deep an medium brood setup an luckily they have always went down. (Knock on wood) to the deep. I have already had to add a super on most of my colonies just to give room because they have got so big in the last two weeks an checking today I have found a LOT of drones so it is looking like I am going to have to go to second or third gear . Last year with our bees getting going so early I was splitting hives the second week of February an this year it is looking like it will be probably around two to three weeks from now . Hope you have a good week. Thanks

Hi Kathy. Fifer I did a few more rotations I smelled that same smell and the brood looked healthy, so I think it’s some funky smelling nectar. I’ve never smelled it before though is what is so strange. I’ll keep an eye on them for sure. Thanks for the nice comments.

Thank you for sharing. The last hive that was the smallest, did you feed them only had sugar and no pollen patties? Maybe that's why they didn't grow as fast as the other 2? When you moved the main brood box down, why did you not use a queen excluder?
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 4 ай бұрын
Hi Kenneth. I only use excluders on my honey supers. That top box will be brood and honey for next winter. I did feed them sugar cakes and no pollen painter this video. That may be the difference. Thanks for watching

Surprised you added pollen patties when they already had 4-5 frames of pollen. I had EFB once early in spring... the brood pattern in my hive looked terrible but your hive/brood pattern looked good and solid. Looks like good populations as well in the first two hives! Your asking a lot of that smaller hive... they are already small and you just asked them to draw out foundation frames in addition to trying to grow in size... will you be feeding them to help with all that?? Iching to get into my hives but too cool still so twiddling thumbs.

Hi Nancy. I think it’s some funky nectar. I smelled it in two others on the north end. Strange. I’m keeping an eye on them. Yeah that third one #15 was pretty small. I’m counting on the nectar flow. I might give them a brood frame later as well when I’m in to swarm prevention mode. Happy spring!
@time2fly2124
@time2fly2124 4 ай бұрын
that last hive i would just leave in a single deep. i dont think defending that space with the foundation is a problem, its that they are loosing a lot of heat up into that empty space, and with the sugar way up on top, thats more distance they have to travel for food. i would agree that your original assessment of reducing them is probably the right one.

Your gloves re interesting. What are they and how to use? Thanks
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 4 ай бұрын
They are Thickster nitrile gloves. Bees don't sting them, and I wear glove liners underneath to absorb sweat and give a little space if there is a stinger that penetrates a bit. Never got stung thru them and they are way more dexterous than beekeeping gloves. I'll never go back to beekeeping gloves. One of my viewers left a comment with the tip on them and I got them last year. They are awesome. Here's links to them: Gloves - amzn.to/3Tkf5Nu Liners - amzn.to/3PmxVlQ

Why put on pollen patties when the bees are bringing in pollen?
@davidpotts3844
@davidpotts3844 4 ай бұрын
It gives them a boost. The Ultra bee patties have other probiotics that natural pollen doesn't have that can ensure better health, if the bees decide they don't need it they won't eat it. It also stimulates more brood rearing as there is more available resources. Resource levels influences how much brood the bees can take care of. The Queen will not lay brood if survival odds to full maturity are low.

I don't believe AFB is treatable
@theshadowoftruth7561
@theshadowoftruth7561 4 ай бұрын
Not really, there is Terramycin (oxytetracycline)It is the only drug approved for use against American Foul Brood. When present in the food given to susceptible larvae this antibiotic is effective in preventing germination of AFB spores. The bees are then able to develop and mature normally. Terramycin will not kill the spores and is not a means for sterilizing either the bees or the equipment. If a colony contains AFB spores and is maintained in a healthy condition through treatment with terramycin, the disease will recur when the drug treatment is discontinued.

Hi Ed. I’ve read both ways. I think it depends on the state you live in. I think AFB is pretty rare. EFB is more common. Thanks for watching
