I was gifted a starter set from Lantern Moon - based on a recomendation from a friend. He was right - PERFECTLY smooth transitions, all one size connectors on the cords, really lovely to work with. My arthritic hands are happy with the smooth transitions and the way the cables spin. The points are VERY slightly larger than the Hiya Hiya and the pouches work well. Needles themselves are black and I don't know what they are made of but so far, they are lovely. Your reviews are helpful because now I know more what to look for. Thanks again Norman, for all your hard work.

I love my Hiyahiya interchangeable sharp needle set. They definitely have THE best cables. My last purchase (dpns) experience was awful though. The mail carrier never received the product from them and they refused to offer me a refund, so unfortunately, I had to dispute the charge. I bought them again through Woolstack instead.

I was struggling with my fingering-weight projects and wondered if the Hiyahiya sharps would help. Thanks so much for this review! I did get both their sock and “small” sets, and problems solved. Your video was such a help! By the way, the faint texture on the barrels does keep them from being too slippery, and it’s wonderful to NOT struggle with lace and increases and decreases. ❤

I absolutely love both HiyaHiya metal needles sets. They are one of the slickest needles on the market and there are no problems with the connectors. So if you are a fast knitter you will love them because they do not hang up. If you knit as slowly as I do, I think you will enjoy the smoothness of working with these needles. I can only speak for the States because I've seen where people have complained about there being a defect and the dealer claimed that they would replace them. I have the wooden needles but I have not used them at this time. It's really sad to hear that the producer of this product would not acknowledge any of your questions. For they make a quality product and in general. If you purchase the full set you get point protectors, snips, stitch markers, sewing needles, long cable extenders as well as the ones that were show in the podcast and 4 cables for the large and smaller needle adapters which go into the little inside pocket. Since all of us are different I feel as if the podcast was fair.

Thanks for the open, honest review. ❤ I'm relatively new to using Hiya Hiya needls but they have changed my relationship with knitting needles entirely. I have an extremely tight tention and the Sharps were a game changer for me. I am amazed at your bamboo set though. The ones I have dont have any of the issues you mentioned. They're actually so smooth that despite my tight tention I still find them a pleasure to use. I have a set of the interchangeable single points too. I mainly use them for swatching but I love the cleverness of them and marvel that someone hasn't come up with the idea before now. Im sorry to hear about the poor communication and transparency this company has. I have suggested my LYS stock this brand but if the company has such bad communication it might not be worth it for them.

Thank you Norman. I already own a 2 sets of Hiya Hiyas, regular and sock. If you think the regular needles are sharp, the sock needles are complete medieval tortures. I find the cords to be really problematic, and so will opt for my Chiaogoos for most projects. The exception is magic loop. The Chiaogoo cords are a bit too stiff for my liking in that instance only. After you mentioned the curious case of the flat part of the HH cords, I checked mine. They are uniformly round after the little teardrop at the end. More mystery. I think that you should be a knitting Sherlock.

Great review Norman…I am a committed HiyaHiya user…LOVE the tips. Agree with you on the brocade case…the button does not hold and the Velcro flap is useless…my needles have slipped out many times within my travel bags etc. I took a gold magic marker to pen in the needle sizes on the fabric. My needles are in constant use for magic loop so the cables are okay but when I wind them up & store…yes they hold that coil for a bit. I never have need for the barber cords to try on a sweater in progress… use a long cord and attach the stoppers! HiyaHiya is not as readily available at local shops in the USA but Amazon generally has what I may need for extra parts, some Etsy shops and online stores. I am a devotee !

Hi when I came to the UK from South Africa in 2005, I decided to knit again. So I started looking for knitting needles and with not enough research I bought Addi clicks. I soon found that I didn't like the metal or the points, but I thought I had to get used to them. I tried all the bamboo needles and found them to be rough. I tought myself to knit socks and by chance I read a comment about HiyaHiya 6 inch 2.5mm needles, bought some and have never looked back. I have lost count of how many sets I have because I have a few pairs of socks going. Yes they do bend a bit, but it doesn't bother me. I have been knitting socks for 10 years now and wouldn't change the needles. They have got sharpish points which suit my knitting, but I have not had any split points. After listening to your video, I went onto Google, to make sure of the fact that these needles are resin infused and that is why they are so smooth. As I am going back to South Africa, I think I should buy a another few sets of these needles, because I have become a sock knitter for relaxation. Thank you for your informative videos. Anita

Thank you Norman for your honest review. With cash so tight, and needle prices ever going higher this is great info. I have always been an Addi Rocket user. However, along with rising insane prices (Addi being the most expensive), I have noticed the quality that once was, is no more. Of late, I cannot knit even 'one' pair of socks without the silver bronze finish on these Addi's wearing completely off, leaving the red brass underneath exposed, which makes the wool drag horribly along the needle. I now have 6 pairs of needles in this condition within just a 6 mo period. @ ave. ... $15.00 a pair, that is a loss of $90.00. So beware. We are not getting our moneys worth...anymore.

you could write Addi a note. I am very sure they would be interested to hear this. One thing they DID change was taking away the nickel from their bronze. Ofc some people are alergic to it, so it makes sense, but people put it in for a reason to begin with. maybe that might explain the change.

Nice review! i offered myself a small set of large (5.5 - 10 mm) , short and not sharp, stainless needles. i do love them very much, but shirt needles are perfect to work small circumferences like sleeves, they are not very convenient for bigger projects especially over 7mm, as the body is very short; i tried 1 pair of sharp needles, they are very VERY sharp endeed!! i never use them; i also bought 1 pair in bamboo, i usully don't like bamboo needles but i found out that for some yarns like brushed alpaca or silk mohair they go perfectly! in my st there was 4 cables, and only 1 connector! and i lost it, so i have to buy few more... its a pitty they don't give more of them like knitpro. i also miss some stoppers for the cables. one other thing, you can not use needles under 5.5mm with the same cables... it's a different set

I had to order a 47 inch fixed circular for a project a few years ago so I thought, why not try out Hiya Hiya. Ouch!!! I know many people prefer them for lace knitting as well as other projects. We are all different. For me, I will stick to my Addi, Chow Goo, and Knitters Pride for lace as well as my other projects. Their customer service does not sound very good based on your experience. I got my Hiya Hiyas a few years ago when I mangled my thumb. I thought the sharpness might make it a bit easier to knit without as much force. I absolutely love them, though I don’t really think they helped the thumb situation 😅 I had almost exclusively used Chiaogoo Twists and KnitPro Zings before that. I just gave away my Zings because I never use them anymore, since I vastly prefer the Hiya Hiya tips I wasn’t using the Zings anymore. I will say that I notice a DRASTIC difference in my gauge when I use HH needles, they make me knit far more loosely. I go down at least one needle size to accommodate that whenever I start a project with them. I love their sharp DPN’s for colourwork, but they are really, really sharp, so I’m very careful with them. I can speak from hard learned experience that a needle as blunt as a KnitPro Zing can puncture your body with ease - I got one embedded 10cm deep into my thigh a few years ago and had to go to hospital to get it safely removed. So the HH sharps would be able to hurt you with way less force, even if you just push your finger down too hard on the tip. I’m not a huge fan of the cables for either fixed or interchangeables. I find the yarn catches on it a bit, enough to annoy me with some yarns. The splittier the yarn, the more it annoys me. I can’t say that I like the bag either, but I like it more than I do the Chiaogoo one, from an aesthetic standpoint. I prefer the zip closure of the Chiaogoo case as well. I’d totally buy them again. If I could have the HH Sharps tips with the Chiaogoo cables, I’d be a very happy knitter.

Good question about stainless steel content, especially nickel.
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles Жыл бұрын
actually i am not so sure. IT will confuse a lot of people thinking that it matters. 99% of all stainless steel will contain nickel. Tis applies to anything in your kitchen..your car...or at your doctors/dentist. yet most people with a severe nickel allergy WON'T react to that. and I guess that's why some needle manufacturers are a bit shy about it because people might draw the wrong conclusions.

The labels are really funny. I think I read checked by Jeanette. The funny thing is when you go shopping in Shanghai at the market a lot of the stalls have the female name Jenny and Jeanette is the French version. I wonder if that is just a coincidence. Sometimes you can tell by numbers what continent the person is from like how a European 1 looks like a North American 7. The Chinese 2 is very distinctive. The label on the the right looks closer to it but I think you’re right in assuming the kit is assembled in a separate location from the manufacture.

Great review, informative video as always! I know one indie yarn dyer in my country, Korea who just started distributing this brand so I could ask if she knows more about the company. I’m totally happy with my four needle sets but maybe i could get one individual interchangeable needle. You are totally right about a company with “sustainable approach” would try to market and promote what they do. You are certainly German to highlight that! Btw I have watched KnitPro (Knitter’s Pride) factory visit in India from a Korean knitting company, they were paying higher, making safe working environment and hiring more women, fyi!

Hi Norman ~ you're my go to for tutorials and reviews. The best teacher out there in my opinion. I'm a relatively new knitter that wants to try knitting socks but my first attempt at using dpn's to knit a hat didn't go well. I'm not sure if I should try again or try the updated version called flex dpn or flexi-flips. I know you prefer dpn's but was wondering if you've done a review of them (can't find one) or would be interested at reviewing them for people who like knitting in the round and but not a big fan of the magic loop and scared of dpn's. Just throwing out a review idea. Love you!

@@NimbleNeedles From what I can tell from some old reviews, I think people who already use DPN's aren't big fans but people who don't use DPN's may like them. I'm torn on which I should invest in since the flexi ones are about $25+ for one set of 3. My thought is if there are only two working needles vs four, there's less chance of ladders. But I watched you last night and you make them look so easy - thinking maybe I should try again. 🙂

I’ve had Hiya Hiya interchangeables for numerous years, but last year bought a set of ChiaGoos. Why? Although I love the HH sharps, the plastic cables that curl (even after putting them into boiling water, they will be curling again the next day) finally pushed me to buy the ChiaGoos.

Thank you for a great review . Adding : My experience was with a full set from 2.75 mm - 10 mm , I was a bit confused, it contained cable-ends (panda) and cable joining devices , but the set doesn't have large cables , so nothing to join. I do have the large to small adaptor , that allows me to make full use of the smaller cables with the larger half of needle sizes though. Side note , my blue cables do not have that flat area, only the green swivel ones.
@karenesplen6005
@karenesplen6005 Жыл бұрын
FYI - Hiya hiya do not come with a large cable. There is only one size of cable. The adapter is used to transition from the small cable end to the large needle end. The “pandas “ are stoppers for the end of the needle. I have the same set as you and it is my favourite needle by far. I prefer Hiya Hiya Sharps to Chiagoo because they are sharper needles, have a thinner cord and a swivel cord. Just my opinion.

@@karenesplen6005Okay, I can see how I might put the tube type lengths on a large needle and create 2 straight needles with panda stoppers. With the panda's having screws and needles as well , it would not work otherwise , need something to screw in as above. Still confusing is the large double screw ends in large size for combining two cables , you stating as I suspected , there are no large end cables. The small double screw ends make sense for the cables that come with it but not the large

@@NYKnitter I received two items in my kit - needle extenders and needle adapters.I have the kit that goes from 2.75 - 10 mm. The extender simply makes your needle longer. However you need the adapter. The adapter is about 4 cm long. One end is large and screws into the large needle. The other end is a small screw end and screws into the cable. It sounds to me like you may have only the extender but not the adapter? If you google Hiya Hiya needle adapter you should be able to see a picture. I don’t know if KZfaq will allow a picture to be posted but I will try

As to the bend in the cable at the base of the needle...I always assumed it was to help hold a round shape when knitting in the round🤷‍♀️I have another set of needles with the base of the needle itself is bent instead of the cord. I really don't know for sure tho~!! I use the HiyaHiya needles a lot. My set is the stainless steel short(4 inch) sharps,and I think the sizes are 2.75 or 2.5mm up to 10mm. My biggest complaint is that it's almost IIMPOSSIBLE to read the needle size printed on the needle,I often give up and just guess or use process of elimination lol. I have an auto immune disease that has caused my eyesight to become very poor in a matter of just a few years😔My other complaint is that the cords need an adapter to screw into the larger needle sizes,meaning yep......a slight snag at the join depending on what kind of yarn I'm using. Id prefer a non swivel cable tho. I love the sharp tips~!! I have a tough time using other,less sharp needles now! And I love the sound they make,sometimes deliberately clacking or sliding them together. l find it very soothing. All in all,I love my HiyaHiya's and would choose them again if anything happened to this set. Thanks for this great and VERY thorough review~!! 🥢🧶💛

I baught a similar set of HiyaHiya needles a few years ago (long before the pandemic). I had to wait almost one month before the order was delivered. It was quite expensive. In addition, after a few weeks use, one of the needles went apart from the cable. The little "connector" attached to one side of the smallest cable broke. I had to fix it with some glue/adhesive tape. The result was not satisfactory. Now I am not using the set anymore, even with the other cables. I am afraid they might brake too.

Might the flat part of the cable conceal a slit for a lifeline? My Addi lace set has such a little slit and it was very hard to feel or see but eventually I found it. Hiya Hiya pouches are 100% better than Knitters Pride faux suade/leather. I bought a set of DPN laminated wood and also the same material of interchangeable needles. Both cases are thicker and have (for me) hard to open and close compartments. I love the needles, but I bought a reasonable case. That unfortunately increased the cost of the sets. Which were affordable on their own.
