I have both the H&K P30SK & H&K VP9SK. I carry the P30SK during the day and the VP9SK at night with a light (either a Streamlight TLR 7A or Olight Baldr Mini With Green Laser Combo). I have no problem carrying a DA/SA (i.e., P30SK) pistol with decocker and no safety. For many years, I carried either a Glock 26 or Glock 19. However, the adjustable grip panels (sides and back) allow me to adjust each firearm to fit my hand vey well, and I have no problem shooting very accurately with the 10 round magazine (flat plate) which only allows me to grip the firearm with three fingers and the little finger being wrapped beneath the magazine. Either of these pistols makes a very good carry pistol, and I have never had a misfire with either (635 rounds fired in the VP9SK and 375 rounds fired in the P30SK). My preferred carry round is either Speer Gold Dot 124 +P or Winchester PDX1 Defender 124 +P. Additionally, I have found Federal Hydra-Shock and Federal HST to be good carry rounds.

I’ve owned the VP9SK for about 5 years or so. I bought it for two reasons: first, I have other HKs in my collection (P2000V3 and the 45C), they are quality firearms for sure and second , I did not like the trigger on my Walther PPQM2. The PPQ trigger was too light for my preferences. The VP9SK is very accurate, and with the range of magazines available, it is one of the most versatile carry guns I own. Your comment about carrying a gun with a fully cocked striker was a bit of an attention getter for me. While I appreciate all the features of the VP9SK there is always that nagging thought in the back of my mind that this gun requires 100% of your attention (as they all do) while carrying it especially while re-holstering. Training issues notwithstanding, I always approach carrying the VP9SK with a lot more caution than I do with my Colt Defender or even my HK45C. Your video just reinforced that point.

As a lefty and a novice pistol shooter, I love the VP9. The extra length of the trigger guard makes it easier to slide my finger on the trigger, and the slide release and the paddle mag release make it faster (for me) to reload. I hope it's never necessary to have those functions but it's always better to have it and not need it than the alternative. Thanks for sharing your expertise.

I had first bought a P30 due to the HK reviews I saw on KZfaq and love the look, feel, ergos and how well made the P30 was built but when shooting it, man was I having a hard time due to the bad trigger. Months later, bought a VP9 and sold my P30. VP9 is almost perfect due to I prefer 4lbs triggers. I also bought the VP9L kit and gun got even better. I would like a P30L with the Gray Guns trigger job but paying $700 + for a P30L and another $350 for the trigger work is something I'm not quite sold on just yet.

Good video comparison! Seems like every video I watch about these two guns people seem to prefer one or the other for different reasons I guess it’s all personal preference as expected. I have both striker fired handguns and DA/SA guns and I really can’t decide which one I want to get next lol guess I’ll just have to shoot both and find out I just wish I could find some more HK’s locally. One thing I’ve noticed about another difference is the VP9 has a deeper undercut behind the grip so it seems like you should be able to get your hand up higher on the grip than the P30 so that might naturally lend itself to be a faster more accurate shooter as well.

Grayguns can shorten the reset and allow you to shoot the LEM trigger faster. HK also sells a shorter and more flush slide stop/release (though it's pricey). It would basically give you the slide stop of the P2000SK (which doesn't come back as far to avoid riding it).

My first experience with HK was a P2000 - bought it used, and immediately(next day) sold it back to the person I bought it from. Next was P30 DA/SA w decocker. Tried to like it but my skills weren’t there to shoot consistently tight groups with it. Sold it… then I got into the VP9, and I couldn’t believe how easy it was to be accurate with. I dove deep into the P30 LEM and bought three of each(3 P30 LEM, and 3 P30SK LEM), which I usually do to any firearm that I love. Just in case the world falls apart, I want to have my favorite things secured. I know, I have a sickness… anyway, I did love the P30 series, but I just loved the VP9 series more, so I no longer own any P30 series pistols. VP9 remains as just about my favorite pistol of all time. Went through severe CZ phases to, but have come to the conclusion that for DA/SA the Sig P229 series it it for me, preferably German frames. Love P320 series. Love 1911s. Back to carrying Glock after 4 years of carrying the P365.

Thanks for the comparison! I have a full size vp9 and have really enjoyed shooting it for the past 5+ years. I rarely carry it due to its size, however, I almost always grab the LCPII due to comfort and convenience. I'm starting to look for something with a bit more power and capacity so naturally I have looked at the VP9SK since I'm very familiar with that platform. The hammer fired LEM trigger of the P30 is intriguing though - it actually seems very similarly to the LCP trigger which also pulls the hammer back with the trigger pull. I'm also looking at the sig P365 which seems to have the size advantage. Tough choice!

"THUMBS UP" Your video was very informative and I agree with everything you said. I have a VP9Sk and a P30SK LEM. The truth is, I shoot the VP9SK faster and a little more accurate than the P30SK. The LEM trigger does take time to get familiar with. I shoot mine just fine. I would feel comfortable if it was the only gun I owned. I would like to get the P30SK in SA/Da. However, I prefer the ole USP COMPACT SA/DA. You will find that the trigger is superior and as far as size, the USP COMPACT is the exact same as a VP9SK with the 13rd magazine. I believe that's why we are seeing so many AD's in law enforcement and civilians with the sig 320's , there isn't even a trigger safety/dingus on it,.. yeah the trigger is sweet but way too light for people while under stress. Aleast the H&K has a trigger safety built into it. I'm a Glock fan and have carried one for 24 yrs in LE. Most shooters don't realize the glock is a double/action striker fired pistol extremely safe to carry or drop while chambered. Keep up the great reviews sir..
@RidersRange

Thanks for watching and commenting. And thank you for your service to your community. Point of clarification: Glock was careful to not market their pistols as "double action", instead, they used the term "safe action". The striker is approximately 85% cocked with a 5 pound +/- trigger pull and there is no second strike capability, thus not actually double action.

Thanks for another well done video. I have always been intrigued by the HK models but have a slight preference for other brands. I too have always found it a little unnerving carrying a fully cocked striker with no external safety. Do you know if all striker fired pistols are "fully cocked"? If other brands are "pre-cocked" or "half-cocked" are they any safer?
@RidersRange
@RidersRange 2 жыл бұрын
@Steve Stone, thanks for watching and commenting. HK, Canik, Kimber (R7 Mako and EVO, but not the Solo) and many other striker-fired pistols are about 100% cocked. Glocks are somewhere around 85% cocked. Kahr pistols (and I believe the Kimber Solo) aren't cocked, hence the longer double-action-style trigger pull. I carried a Glock of one model or another for 28 years without incident and even carried a G27 inside the waistband and in an ankle holster on occasion and never felt uncomfortable, but I was extremely careful when holstering and only carried in a quality holster. Millions of folks carry all manner of striker-fired pistols safely, but after carrying a 1911 with thumb safety and grip safety for the past 10 years, I'll have to admit I wouldn't carry any striker-fired pistol in the appendix position.

The striker guns most times have a firing in safety or a striker block which is deactivated by the trigger bar when pulled. I was going to the same thing and did switch from an x macro ( because I'm not trusting sigs striker guns.). to a p30 and I'm now contemplating going back to the Stryker just because I can't get used to the LEM trigger, and miss having an optic.

Modern revolvers also have a hammer/firing pin block that keeps the firing pin away from the primer unless the trigger is pulled, but I doubt anyone would carry a cocked revolver, even though they are fine carrying a fully cocked semi-auto with a light trigger. Yes, I know there are literally millions of folks who safely carry fully cocked striker-fired pistols every day without incident. Partially cocked pistols, such as the Glock (no, I'm not a Glock fanboy) are a little more safe than fully cocked pistols, such as the VP9 series. Thanks for watching.

The explanation I have heard is that the extra hardware in the hammer fired system creates a higher bore axis and adds weight versus the striker fired gun. The rear decocker on the standard P30 DA is stiff and awkward for me. Hi there. I must take exception to your description of a striker fired pistol as "fully cocked" at all times. The striker (or firing pin if you prefer) is in the forward uncocked position BEHIND a striker block safety until you start to pull the trigger rearward. The striker begins to become cocked only when the trigger is pulled to the rear. The act of moving the trigger to the rear is what cocks the striker. The striker block safety is also raised out of the way by the pulling of the trigger to the rear. These 2 actions happen simultaneously.
@RidersRange
@RidersRange 2 жыл бұрын
Peter, thanks for watching and commenting. You are correct about the striker block, which is present in virtually all striker-fired pistols, but you are not correct about the striker not being cocked. The VP9 series has a very visible striker and when the slide is racked you will clearly see the red end of the striker in the fully cocked position under full spring tension. As you press the trigger, you will notice that the striker doesn't move rearward any more than it is before pulling the trigger. So, sorry to burst your bubble, but it is 100% cocked, with no user-operable manual safety. The KZfaq channel "Si vis pacem , para bellum" has a great cut-away action of the VP9 and starting at 0:25 in the video and again at 2:35, you can clearly see that the striker is fully cocked under spring tension until it is released by the trigger mechanism.
@petergozinya6122
@petergozinya6122 2 жыл бұрын
@@RidersRange You are right about the VP9. I stand corrected. My statement was based on the Glock design, which I’m most familiar with and who’s striker is cocked by the action of pulling the trigger to the rear. I wrongly assumed that all striker pistols functioned the same. Thanks for educating me. Keep pumping out the videos 👍
@DesignInNature
@DesignInNature Жыл бұрын
@@petergozinya6122 Peter. Sorry to have to intrude here and yet again correct you on the Glock design as well. If you look at Glock cutaways you can clearly see the striker is retracted 99.9 % of the way. The striker gets pulled back only 1 or maybe 2 millimeters as you pull the trigger. The Glock striker is fully ready to be slingshot forward at all times when the slide is in the racked position. The striker pin block does have to be moved out of the way simultaneously as the striker is being released in the back all at the same time. But the Glock most definitely does not do any substantial "cocking" of the striker during trigger pull. It's only a tiny hair movement back as the fully cocked striker is simply being released. I handled one of this cutaway Glock 23s in a store when I was getting familiar with their safety mechanisms for carry. The armorer who changed my sights was very gracious with his time in his explanations and hands-on demonstration of the Glock trigger action mechanism. It's all I carry now and love them. Just thought I'd point you to look at the mechanism a little closer in action.

3 lb. 7 oz. striker fired trigger? That's a little too light in my opinion. Are you sure that's right?
@RidersRange
@RidersRange Жыл бұрын
That's from my calibrated Wheeler trigger gauge. I'm fine with a 3.5 pound trigger on a 1911, but I agree that it's a little light for a gun that doesn't have a manual safety.

Before I switched over to 1911s I carried HK LEM pistols. Had them all. P30s, USPs, and HK45s and shot them really well. When that was all I was shooting, I shot them well. When I started shooting SAO, I found that I didn’t shoot the LEMs as well anymore and eventually moved them all along to new homes.

The VP9SK has a great trigger, but the gun is 100% cocked. The LEM trigger, thought not as "nice", at least is safer than carrying a fully cocked gun that doesn't have a safety. Thanks for watching.

I disagree with you regarding the trigger. I own the P30L and SK and think the stock trigger is atrocious, especially in comparison to my Canik Elite Combat and Walther PPQ. I got the Gray Guns trigger kits installed in both guns and the triggers suck 40% less (true statistic) and shooting enjoyment has increased by a comparable number.

It's still a tough decision. The LEM trigger on the P30SK takes some getting used to, but considering the VP9SK is 100% cocked (with no safety), it makes for a great trigger. Thanks for watching.

Let me help you. The distance between the barrel and guide rod is because one is hammer fired and the other is striker. Hammer fired requires more distance between the barrel and guide rod because of the higher bore axis
@RidersRange
@RidersRange 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting. The difference between barrel/guid rod is 0.06", hardly enough to make a meaningful difference. Also, the base of the pic-rail on the P30 is thicker than the same area on the VP9SK.

I don't own a striker fired handgun. Fully cocked striker fired guns with no external safeties are range guns not carry guns! If I did buy a striker fired gun, I would require a usable external safety - like the P320 military sidearm. As for negligent discharges, I have heard of "GLOCK leg"; but, I have never heard of "DA/SA leg". The only reason that striker fired pistols are so popular is that most shooters do not want to put in the range time to develop the superior discipline needed to effectively shoot DA/SA guns. Also, if a DA/SA gun is poorly designed, the DA trigger reach can be too far for smaller hands. Do yourself a favor. Try to see if you can get used to the H&K LEM trigger. The superior safety of the design is well worth the effort!

All good points. Millions of folks carry striker-fired pistols without any issues and I carried a Glock on duty for 24 years (and off duty for the final 10 years on the job). But there are enough documented incidents to make me reconsider. Thanks for watching and adding your thoughts.
