James C. Scott: A Short Account of the Deep History of State Evasion
Lecture
“Zomia,” the designation invented by Willen van Schendel for the portion of upland Southeast Asia that has, until recently, evaded incorporation into nation states and empires, could metaphorically be extended to other areas of the world that have become zones of state evasion. In his lecture, Scott explores some of these zones in Southeast Asia and elsewhere. Though Zomia is mountainous, wetlands, swamps, marshes, and deltas have also historically served as refugia for state-fleeing populations. Scott examines the principles of geography, subsistence practices, mobility, and social structure that abet both state avoidance and state-prevention.

I'm a Mizo from Mizoram. We are one of the hill people groups discussed in Professor James C Scott's book. A lot of Mizos have come to treasure his work. His work is a gift to my community as we often struggle with the question of who we are as a people. Thank you, Mr. Scott. God bless.

Dear Professor Scott, Thank you so much for a wonderful lecture, chock full of insights and new ways of looking at what I assumed was "settled" information - not so, as you showed. Your generous references to other scholars set me off to re-read Braudel again, & check out others that you mentioned. After reading your new book, of course. Thank you once again for delighting me with a rush of intellectual excitement. Mike AAMOI: Johnson & Nixon & Neil Armstrong all descended from rather barbarous folks who lived in the border hill country between England & Scotland. The valley village houses were built for defence around the central square (the camp footprint of the Legion, perhaps), & can still be seen as such. But I'm sure that you probably know all this.

His book "Seeing Like A State" is simply mind-blowing. How and why "high modernism" and big social experiments (and rules) have been such an en epic fail, allover the world. The direct comparisons he draws between different types of states, iconic statesmen and their dreams (failed) is very important, especially for future generations. His book serves a great source of inspiration, to divest and de-legitimatize the whole notion of nation states and fixed citizenship.

Pr Scott sheds light on the early formation of States, its evolution from vulnerable institutions to current mighty powers. In his book, "Against the Grain", Pr Scott details the cooperation between non state people and states and concludes with a note that the end of non state people came because of their successful cooperation with states. I wonder if the multitude of modern states that successfully cooperate will evolve into one mighty super state. Is the EU such an evolution and does this benefit citizens or oppresses them into remaining the generators of surplus to feed an ever hungry state.

there seems to be no real benefit in having several competing States: their competition is just waste of ressources (military, principally) and prevents effective cooperation on several issues that need world cooperation (fishing rights, global warming, soil erosion, forest protection etc)

18:41 "friction of distance maps"… implicitly here, it's friction against humans and the means by which humans traverse distance… Makes me think of the motor-sensory homunculus - an analogy of human action in phenomenological terms - the texture (friction?) of human experience displayed in proportion.. (his side note concludes 20:11 )

James Scott is a Gem. Was listening to this while cooking and I couldn’t help but notice his voice sounds pretty similar to Donald Trump. And I kept getting a laugh imagining a smart version of President Trump saying these things. Especially when he talked about Guangdo being a Petri dish of Zoonotic illnesses.
