To clarify I believe notch said at one point there was going to be a red dragon added to the game but nothing ever came of it since it was bought out by Microsoft (I'm going from memory so feel free to clarify if I'm wrong)

The red dragon was the concept of a dragon that would spawn in the overworld. It was called the red dragon because it was a dragon that was red. The idea was first teased by Notch, then when Notch stepped down, Jeb said it was still in development. The most recent news has been Dinnerbone saying that it is still a concept they hope to put into the game in the future.
