Had a rough cold start condition in my 1993 M1097 hmmwv. Decided to check and then change the glow plugs. Here’s a quick video of the process.

Hey new to the Humvee world. Wit light was working when the truck was parked outside on dealers lot. Now that it’s inside a garage the wait light doesn’t come on…it does start right up with a little white smoke …and ideas

Great video... How did you find one plug is bad? Do you check resistance on the plugs frequently or was there any symptoms?

Good video. Own a M998 1986 ... want to change the candles too. But I shudder from it. :-(

It’s probably a bad controller or burnt out bulb. Put a test light a plug to see if it gets power. Also watch the amp meter see if it dips.

I thought the same thing so I changed out the bulb…. and the smart box is only a couple months old… but it has ran with the light not coming on…. could it be the Glow plugs?? Would that make the light not coming on?? Thanks

Looks like they have gone up since I last bought them. I see good quality sets for $69 or around that price. Still a bargain, and worth doing often to keep them from failing or swelling.

My m998 hates cold weather. Installed a block heater and as long as I give it a hour it fires right up ! What’s the deal with being cold that makes it hard to start ?

@@mikei8957 they need good glow plugs to fire off. Any extra heat will help it start when it’s cold. They don’t have the same ignition setup as a gasoline motor. They ignite the fuel by compression alone. The glow plugs help heat the combustion chamber to make it easier to ignite the fuel charge.
